I hear you, and whoever they draft whether in the 1st or UDFA, they need to sit for a year whether it's Vick/Geno or someone else.
Both have massive bust factors for different reasons. I'm not on board with trading up however. If we can stand pat at 5 and get a QB then you do so. Winston can prob start right away where-as Mariota would need to sit and adapt to the pro-style game. This also depends on the coach we acquire. You get the guy from Auburn, maybe you can start Mariota right away in a spread offense system adapting to his strengths.
I think we arguing for nothing. New coach and new GM is upon us. They will decide what they want to do. And I don't think the new GM will start with a contradictory move like trading up for a player. We will pick 4th or 5th and if a QB is there we will take him and if not, we will take the BPA. By the way it sucks for the Jets that this year, there are multiple teams sucking. Normally a 2 win season gets you the first pick. This year it might not even bring you the 3rd pick. Sucks
[ Agreed. Trading up would probably cost next years first, and if we're going into the season with Vick as the starter that will probably be an elite pick. If we can stand pat at 5 and the FO loves Mariota for Winston, they have to go for it. I would be shocked if we traded up though.
With the way teams overanalyze the qb position don't be surprised if both guys fall to the end of the first round/early second round. If it weren't for the Jags being the Jags Bortles would've slipped right along with Manziel and Bridgewater.
Winston is a guy I could see falling. We could pull a Vikings and trade back into the first. Sucks we traded some of that ammo for Harvin that could come back to haunt us. Get an elite offensive lineman prospect at 5, trade back into the first and get Winston (if the price is right).
I don't like Winston or Mariota. Winston in the NYC metro area with his habit of doing wreck less things is a recipe for disaster. The media would eat him alive. Then you have Mariota who has franchise qb potential but we just drafted a similar guy 2 years ago. Is this something we really want to revisit?
The extension was off of the 2012 season a horrible year. It was a key reason he was fired. Mark's original contract wasn't ridiculous because it was his rookie contract and when they signed him they all thought he was going to be our franchise Qb. I wouldn't put all of our eggs in that basket again. I'd get a new coach and build the infrastructure. And get a good vet Qb like a Hasselbeck if he's available. But I'd have no problem if they decide on Mariota. But I wouldn't throw him into the starting job.
I truly believe Mariota is easily the better prospect compared to Geno Smith [accuracy, more of a dual-threat, good throwing mechanics], but the question wherever he's able to run the pro offense is a big question mark. I look at RG3 now and I see a guy that can't throw in the pocket consistently. That scares me about Mariota. Winston, I completely agree - I don't trust him off-the field. Immaturity hinders development. I really like Connor Cook coming out of MSU, but he's not coming out this year.
LOL That's the spirit, never change 101. Let's be mediocre for ever unless a potential franchise changer FALLS to us. Otherwise, yeah, lets just go get a tackle. That'll move the dial. _
Offensive line is in bad shape right now. What's a QB if you can't protect him? None of these guys are Andrew Luck so I fail to see this "franchise changer" - Franchise Changer? Woody hiring a GOOD VP of Football Operations (and in process giving all football operation control to him) - that's a Franchise Changer.
Both played in a primarily spread/gimmick offense. Both have/had franchise qb potential if developed properly.
I agree with the bold. Both guys have franchise potential (the key) but neither guy is a can't miss prospect. Both guys need to sit for at least half a season at the minimum before seeing time.
We cannot cannot cannot miss on another first round pick. First, we have only half the picks we had last year so every pick counts twice as much. Part of the reason we are here is because of Millner, Kyle Wilson, Coples, etc. this may sounds backwards but I think the pick here is an offensive lineman still. We can't afford to miss on a top 5 pick with a QB and we haven't shown any ability to develop offensive skill talent. I prefer taking the approach we did in Geno year as it doesn't seem that there is a Luck type prospect so take a sure fire offensive lineman first and get a veteran QB and hopefully get a developmental guy later.
Even if this is true this still doesn't guarantee that he's a franchise qb nor does it even guarantee that he's going to be better than Geno. So if we take him we better make sure we bring in a vet.
Would you trade a 2nd and a fourth? I don't think it's going to take an RG3 deal to get it done. If we continue at this pace and we're 3 or 4 and depending if Winston keeps his nose clean and has a great combine, I think we'll need to move up one spot to get Mariota and then I don't think it'll take next year's 1. _
