...and then we coulda pulled an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff....score another td before the half and we're up 35-9!!! It was a dumb call. They can't score if they ain't got the ball. That's how you beat Aaron Rodgers...not a shootout.
Do you really wanna dwell on what's gonna happen next week on National TV after what happened this week? The only difference is that we'll be up against a true gunslinger instead of a future HOF Qb. Lately every time this team gets on MNF, it RARELY ends well. I can certainly see Cutler throwing for at least 350 on us or even 400yds if we give him the ball long enough. This is just another chapter of "murderer's row" that we knew was coming. I'm just hoping we show up and make a game of it. One thing is for damn sure. We're not playing OAKLAND anymore...
Throwing on 1st down when the entire world including GB expected a few runs to milk the clock may have been the correct down to pass on. MM was going for the kill. Not on that one pass play necessarily but he was determined to keep the drive going and score 7, and that don't happen if we play it 'safe' and just go for 3. What would this thread look like if we played it safe, got the 3, then lost by a few points? Be honest.
And if Geno had more time to throw maybe he checks down to Ivory. The oline gave him no time on that play. Unfortunate result but not a bad call IMO.
That's what I was thinking. In that situation, MM's job is to remind Geno of the game situation, not take a sack, not take a chance on a throw, check it down if no one is open, if you have to run, slide inbounds, yada yada. The only mistake MM made was he forgot to tell Winters to block.
Hindsight doesn't make it a dumb call, it just proves it. They got the ball back with plenty of time and 3 timeouts. We're not ready to win in a shootout with Aaron Rodgers.
Lets be honest...MM has made some head scratching calls in the first two weeks. The big takeaway you see from this team after two weeks is they are strong on the lines and that lends itself to lining up in base packages and just pummeling the other team. Yet Marty gets too cute, especially in the red zone, and this has hurt the Jets. He needs to stick with what works and keep doing it over and over until the other team proves they can stop us. GB's defense looked lost against us in the 1st half yesterday. Yet we let them right back in the game with some stupid fuckin play calls. Marty needs to improve a lot.
I have to agree with the OP: It was a stupid play call given the situation. They should have just run the ball, bled the clock or at least made GB use all of their time outs, if we get a TD that's a bonus but what you're really looking for is to bleed the clock and kick a FG and we go into the half with a score of 24-9 with the ball coming your way and all of the momentum in a hushed building. As other posters noted: -even if you get a TD there you are still giving the ball back to one of the best QBs in the league with all three of their timeouts and you have to factor in the possibility of them getting a TD in which case it negates the TD you just put up and gives them momentum -if you are going to be aggressive and call a play like that why not throw it to one of your top receiving threats? Not a backup TE who probably played 5 snaps all game (too lazy to check) It was a stupid play and between that and his needless TO call he basically cost us a 17 points swing (at least 10-14 points swing for not taking the FG/TD at end of 2nd quarter vs the Packers 7 from the turnover, 7 for the TO call that cost us the game tying TD) and, essentially, the game.
