I hear ya. If our next HC wins 2 SB, I wouldn't be alive to see the 8-8 seasons, because I'm certain that the shock would be too much for my heart.
I'd take him over Del Rio and Pagano, but those may be the only 2 candidates I'd take him over. I'll take your word that he once had that great eye for talent and OL in particular, but I don't believe for one minute that he does any more. If he did, his last 10 years at Denver wouldn't have been the way it was and he wouldn't have been so awful in Washington.
I disagree regarding Shanahan not being a bad option. His 4 seasons in Washington and his last 10 with Denver say that you're wrong. You could take about any poster in this forum, or any schlub off the street and he'd be smarter and better than Bowles.
That would be awesome! I'm betting Rex would want to come back as DC for the Jets. He's lately made it pretty clear that he doesn't bear any ill will towards the organization and still considers himself a Jets fan. We hired him from Baltimore for a reason; with the right defensive pieces, we could have a unit like we did in his first year with us. Plus, Harbaugh has had enough time as a HC to know both sides of the ball pretty well, and he's had a track record of success despite having an only-occasionally-good QB in Flacco.
I still think I'd ask Shanahan to be the POFO, but I'd take him over any OC/DC or college coach. As bad as he might've been at the end in Denver and then with Washington, he'd still be a huge upgrade from Bowles, or anyone since Parcells.
I disagree. You don't know that he'd be a big upgrade. If he was the same coach that he was early in Denver, yes, but he's wasn't that coach later in Denver or in Washington, so wouldn't be here. You're projecting. He's been away from coaching and football for 5 years. The game could have passed him by. Remember also that his offenses were centered on running the ball.
Yes, running the ball was a strong point, but it wasn't like they didn't pass - remember a guy named John Elway? In fact, the type of player and skill set that Sam has would fit well in an offense that had a strong running game. And just because he's been out of active coaching for 5 years, doesn't mean he's been living in cave. I'm not saying I don't have concerns based upon his track record at the end, but there could be more to that than simply him doing a bad job. Both owners he worked for were very hands-on, and we don't know how much their interference played a role in things - my guess is it was a major issue. I don't see how you can say he wouldn't be a massive upgrade over Bowles.
I'm not saying he wouldn't be a upgrade over Bowles. Almost anyone would be. I just don't think he would be a "massive" upgrade, but even if he was, that wouldn't be saying much since Bowles is so bad. I just don't think he's good enough to get us where we want to go, and he certainly wouldn't be here long term. I want some stability. I don't want to have to hire a new HC in 4-5 years. I want the Jets to get it right and for that coach to stay for at least 10-15 years. John Harbaugh or McCarthy could do that. Being out of the game 5 years is huge. A lot of change has happened in the NFL, and he may not know (probably not) the new generation of young coaches. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
No thanks to Mike Shanahan. No thanks to Mike McCarthy. The only big name that I would care about would be John Harbaugh. Otherwise I want a coach that sounds smart, quick on their feet, and aware of the challenge ahead. McCarthy is way too traditional like Bowles, barely has emotion, and lacks creativity. Mind you, he was responsible for drafting Alex Smith over Aaron rodgers when he was the 49ers OC way back. Shanahan is basically an old crazy hermit now. He's too old and lacks the energy needed to inject into this team.
Just to bring this up now, because it will probably be a thing in the offseason: Doug Marrone will probably be fired by the Jaguars. If he is, he will be a name floating around, especially since the Jets had such huge interest in him in 2015 before hiring Bowles. I say absolutely no. The stories surrounding this guy are concerning at best. Let alone he ruined the Jags this year.
It strikes me as odd that all these retread names get tossed around, but nobody ever brings up Mike Smith (former Falcons HC). The guy is 66-44, only ever had 2 losing seasons. Yes, he's a defensive guy. Yes, he got fired as Tampa's D-coordinator early this season, but quick--Name 3 players from Tampa's D! He's not John Harbaugh, but he's a lot better than Shanahan, Del Rio, McCarthy, or Marrone in my book. And I'd entertain the thought of Whisenhunt. I'd still prefer Kubiak, but I don't think that guy will ever coach again. Can anybody show evidence that Shanahan was any good without either Kubiak at OC or RG3 sacrificing his body for wins?
Rex the DC is nothing close to Rex the HC. Not saying I want him back, but he'd make a great DC if he hadn't already tarnished his reputation. Same goes for Bowles... he's going to be a great DC somewhere in a year or two.
