I've only done it for 3 players- Fitzgerald, Darryl Strawberry, and Gheorghe Muresan. The Strawberry one shouldn't really count, though, because I was there for the Mets entire team, really. But certainly I simply had to see Strawberry in person.
I'm not sure on my choice (calvin) but he surely deserves more credit than this poll has given him. Switch him to Arizona and switch Larry to Detroit and you gotta believe the answers in this poll are different... That being said, I think the receivers on this list are the best in the league, with the exception of TJ and maybe Smith. (tho he is top 10)
I'd say the two things that you need in a WR is dependability (hands, toughness, route-running) and the physical tools (height, speed, strength). Now, all these WRs are great. But you take a guy like Randy Moss or Plaxico Burress and he's got all the physical tools but little of the dependability. A guy like Steve Smith or Hines Ward is the opposite - he isn't that physically gifted but he has all the intangibles. Then you have guys that score high in both categories. Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson are as good as it gets when it comes to physical talent but, among those 3, Larry is the most dependable.
Look who's throwing to Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson. Matt Schaub? Dan Orlovsky/Jon Kitna/Daunte Culpepper? If the choice came down to choosing Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson, I would pick Calvin Johnson based on just the potential of him being on a team with a great QB. Larry Fitzgerald is proven and great; I am not knocking that. But if the second most accurate passer in NFL history was throwing to Calvin Johnson, he could exceed the level play he has already experienced with a shaky QB situation in Detroit.
It hurts to say this but after this year I don't think Moss belongs up there. Anyways, after the playoffs this year I don't see how you couldn't give it to Fitzgerald.
I'm going with Fitz now for reasons already stated, but both Johnsons are right behind him and in a few years if Calvin gets a good passer throwing to him, he may take the crown. I've been following Andre Johnson since the '03 draft, however, since I honestly was hoping that our trade up for D-Rob was instead for Johnson at the time (he went a spot earlier anyway). Still someone I wish very much was on the team.
