I think it could be. I will defer to the older guys for the Snell/Boozer years but since I have been watching. It's hard to top Freeman and Hector but I think this group can be the best we have ever had as a group.
I don't care about this current RB committee or future RB committee for that matter, no RB or RB committee can measure up to Curtis Martin, thee greatest RB we've ever had. He was humble, he had heart, and he did something today's RB's can't do with the exception of a couple, he was an every down back! He didn't need a committee! The times with Lamont Jordan didn't occur til Curtis was up there in age but hands down he's the greatest Jet RB EVER
Good thread. We've been blessed with really good running games throughout the years. And again this year. I think how well our running game does will depend a lot on how committed MM is to it. We have the fire power this season to at least be in the conversation with past years but 1) I don't think we have a great/dominant run blocking o-line and 2) I doubt MM will go all in on the run, especially with Amaro, Decker, and Kerley running routs. Plus I can see us playing catch-up in our early games this season which could put the running game on the shelf in the 2nd half of a lot of games. The talent is there, but I don't think it's going to play out in the running game's favor.
Wasn't that 2004 where he beat out Sean Alexander by a few yards just shy of 1700? (toolazytolookitup)
Not sure if it's nostalgia but I really think the Freeman McNeil/Johnny Hector combo was better. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm also happy with this season's RB core. Just don't think it's the best. The best Jets RB was obviously Curtis Martin but he was good enough to be a featured RB. So I won't include him in any RB by committee comparisons.
Concur. And while my first memories of the Jets were 1969 and the early 70s hazy, I can't imagine those Snell and Boozer or Boozer and Riggins combos weren't better. _
The thing about McNeil/Hector was the fact that all too often it wasn't a one-two punch - it was Hector standing in full-time while McNeil was injured. I loved both backs, but we so often had to make do with just one of them. I loved the Jones/Greene/Washington trio in 2009. I think this year has great potential, but we'll see.
If someone offered to trade me Curtis Martin in his prime for Johnson, Ivory, Powell, Bohannon, and Richardson in their primes, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'd take old 2004 Curtis Martin with no backup over our current group. I'd also take McNeil/Hector, Boozer/Snell, Boozer/Riggins over them, too. And that's not to say I don't like our current group-- I think they'll be very, very good. Likely the best in the league.
All I read from this original topic makes no mention of the previous year, so don't rip posters if you can't word it correctly. And regardless of what any of these backs have done previously, they don't hold a candle to either Curtis Martin, Freeman McNiel, Riggins, Boozer, Snell, Clark Gaines, ....etc....etc.....I've seen them all play. Why? Simply because the backs I have mentioned have done it over a long stretch of time, and that is the measuring stick to compare with. The backs we have now have not proven anything with the Jets. Lets see what transpires over the next 2 seasons, then make a poll. Incidently, you should have added "Too soon to Judge", in your poll...that would have taken my vote.
Of course it's too early to judge lol that's the point of the thread, to give a prediction. Just like the thread on predict the stats and just like the thread on predicting the record.
