    Don't shoot the messenger...

I spoke to my father tonight. I asked him who was the best of these four Jets wide receivers- Sauer, Walker, Johnson, or Toon? (Note: I did not include Chrebet because he is clearly behind those four, as well as Maynard.)

He thought about it for a few moments and then said, "Sauer." At the time there were 2 votes for Sauer, 14 for Chrebet and 0 for Johnson. Regarding that, my father said, "People are too stupid and can't think back too far."

    Toon.

It's sad that Wayne Chrebet has the second most votes, and I'm not surprised one bit.

  3. Yeah,

Many believe that if Sauer had stayed commited to the sport and kept playing...he may have been an all time great w/ several NFL records.

Unfortunately he just didn't play long enough, and frankly Namath's inconsistent health didn't help things.

    I rank them like this...

    1. Toon
    2. Sauer
    3. Walker
    4. Chrebet
    5. Keyshawn(If he and Parcells had stayed w/ the Jets, he had the potential to be a HOFer)

Maynard (Named All-Decade in the 1960's in the Sports Illustrated NFL book)
Sauer -- A supersonic Chrebet who helped deliver us to the promised land
Toon -- He had the deep speed and height of Randy Moss, the precise route running of a
Marvin Harrison, and the toughness over the middle of Keyshawn and the hands of
Chris Carter--the total package, just didn't last long enough

Caster -- For carrying the Jets through the desert of the 70's with spectacular, long distance plays, Caster-baby gets my vote here. He's so undervalued because of the teams he played on.

Coles -- Hard to appreciate it what we have in front of us; he's a gamer who makes plays

Chrebet --Set the NFL record for catches over his first 2 nfl seasons. Underappreciated by the Pro Bowl voters, and under-utilized by his coaches during his latter years.

Walker -- Dropsies, toughness issues (and the class of receivers above him) put him down here for me, but he got better as he got older. Great player.

Keyshawn -- Loved everything but the mouth.

Yeah, I guess he did. He had 150 receptions his first two seasons.
I don't recall who had held that record.

I know it has since been broken by Anquan Boldin (157), Reggie Bush (161), and another Hofstra product, Marques Colston (168). Colston is now the record holder. Perhaps, in addition to these three fellows, there are other players who caught 150 or more passes in their first two seasons.

Q caught his 157 in only 26 games. He is the record holder for most catches through 26 games. Chrebet caught his 150 over 32 games.

Don't know Walker and Sauer, so can't really comment there. Frankly I'm surprised to see Key on the list at all, and Chrebet must just be a joke. But one name I think was missed was Rob Moore. My vote goes to Toon because he's the best Jets receiver I ever watched play, but I think Moore was better than both Chrebet and Key.

    Those are my sentiments exactly.

Considering how dismal the team's history is, we've done well with WRs over the years

For me it was between Toon and Walker. Toon had it all and so did Walker , but what made Wlkers achievements even more astounding was that he only had peripheral vision in his left eye , which meant that he could see the ball coming out of the side of his eye but as the ball would get closer , coudn't actually see it.

    Good post, by the by.

My hatred sometimes clouds my judgment, but GOD DAMN Wes Welker for having a name that sounds so much like one of OUR greats.

I've got to follow my heart and go with Wayne . . .

I got chunks of fiber in my stool bigger than that kid, but he had a heart the size of a stadium.

I think Toon and Sauer where the two most complete WR the team ever had and by far better than the rest. I have a tremendous soft spot for Toon who I think was the greatest athlete to ever play for the Jets and had he not got hurt would have been a sure first ballot HOF player. The man was just off the charts gifted and as tough a player going after the ball as I have ever seen.

Keyshawn was ALOT better than Chrebet but since Key only played 4 hyears year I'll put Wayne ahead of him.

    1. Toon
    2. Sauer
    3. Walker
    4. Chrebet
    5. Key

I think if Toon didn't have concussion problems he would have been a HOFer.

Oh and I think Coles can enter the discussion, Coles is a better WR than Chrebet was.

    Toon just barely above Sauer.

Great poll idea. I'm too young for Sauer, but while I loved Walker Toon was the man. Before the concussions, there was serious discussion about who was the best receiver in the game, Toon or Jerry Rice. He was that good.

    great point.

It has surprised me that over the years Maynard has received more accolades than Sauer.

I always thought Sauer was a better all-around receiver, but Maynard had the explosive speed and was the deep threat that Namath loved to go to.

Don't know why there's no love for Rob Moore?

The guy averaged almost 2 YPC higher than Keyshawn while playing on some really crappy teams. Along with Toon, he is my favorite Jets receiver.

It was because when Maynard retired he held the record for all time receptions. Players in the AFL that was better than or very comprable to Maynard (and don't get me wrong, I love Maynard) Lance Alworth (7 time AFL All Pro selection), Art Powell (Former NY Titan) (6 time AFL All Pro Selection), George Sauer (3 time AFL All Pro Selection twice 1st team), Lionel Taylor (5 time AFL All Pro Selection) and Charley Hennigan (4 time AFL All Pro Selection). Otis Taylor and Fred Bilitnikoff were also very good.
