it has got to be Matt Snell. DE Ordell Bracey of the 69 Colts is on record as saying Snell, not Namath, should have been the MVP in super bowl III. Bracey should know--Snell ran over him the whole game.
Just nitpicking here- the correct spelling is Ordell Braase and he didn't play for the 1969 Colts. He retired after Super Bowl 3. ___ I expected Anderson to get votes, but no way should he be leading.
Riggins was my favorite player when I first started watching the Jets, even when Namath was still here, before Wesley Walker came around (see my avatar). I never saw Mathis or Snell play, my dad raves about Snell, but I voted Riggins. Brad Baxter, while not an all-time player, was so great at the goal line and in short yardage. That's exactly what we need right now, so we can rush for more than 4 or 5 TDs in a season and take some heat off our QBs in the red zone. I think the position evolved over years to guys like Anderson and Sowell, who do more receiving and are more versatile players.
Matt Snell no question. The only New York Jet to ever score a touchdown in the Super Bowl. The only one. Enough said.
Anderson had one good year - 2000. In every other year a typical season was 300 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing. That is the best FB in Jet history?????
I'll check with you in the future on all spellings of players from the 1960s--you obviously have all the answers. When I referred to the 69 colts, I was obviously referring to the 69 super bowl (remember, the jets were in it against the colts--we are on the jets website). Wasn't that super bowl played in 1969? But please keep nitpicking--we enjoy posting our opinions and then have you nitpicking them--have you ever considered being a movie critic--you don't have to write a movie--you can nitpick at others who do. And just "nitpicking" your post, the third Super Bowl is written as Super Bowl III, not Super Bowl 3.
I'd go with Snell. He was a bruising back. Riggins is close, but he really had his best years with another team.
I never got to see Snell, Riggins is probably the best on this list but he was a head case with the Jets. I got to show some love for my man Clark Gaines. I believe he ran for 1,000 one year back when 1,000 meant something. He could block and catch a pass. When they lost him through some waiver snafu I almost cried. Trust me, he was a damn good Jet. One you would have been proud of if you got to see him play.
Yup, it was like the walt frazier/ willis reed NBA Finals MVP thing- in game 7 Clyde scored 37 and Reed limped out on to the court and hit a couple of jumpers. But Reed won the MVP. In the SB, Snell ran 30 for 121 and Joe threw for 205. But it was hard to argue with namath as the MVP when everything was taken into account. btw I voted for Snell in this poll.

His high for rushing yardage was 905 in 1979. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry that year and also caught 29 passes. He did not score any touchdowns that year. After he got hurt with the Jets in 1980, he went on to play 10 games with the Chiefs and did absolutely nothing.
I still dream about Richie Anderson taking that screen to the house on the opening drive of the '03 playoff game against the Colts.
