Perhaps now receivers will get [more] open faster... Personally, I was not a Smith "fan" until I read the ridiculous level of hate Jets fans have for him. I mean, seriously, the level of animosity for a rookie QB playing in front of a shitty OL and with virtually Division 1B talent at the skill positions was very abhorrent to me. Same with Coples. Here's a guy playing out of position, making the most of it, not complaining, not taking plays off, and people diminish what good he has done. They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. but, damn it's ridiculous how little people look past the predetermined positions. You know, for SOME.
If Fitz starts, the offense can be middle of the road or a bit better, Fitz played acceptably under Gailey.
how many bad QBs made conf title games? how many helped their team win 2 road playoff games to get there? how many did it in back to back years? looking solely at a rating or any #s and not knowing how they got to that point is a mistake. some players are much worse than their #s indicate, some are much better. Geno has been pretty much right on w/ regards to his #s.
So, in far less words, the hate shown for this QB really isn't justified, considering the cast around him, the playcalling, his relative inexperience, the injuries to key players (or lack of good ones in his first year), the lack of turnovers created. and, sorry, this is just plain inaccurate: "The line play was adequate for half of the season, then tapered off..." It was exactly the opposite: the OL play sucked while Winters was in and improved after he got injured.
Fitz puts up decent #s but is not a good QB. I don't care about #s, I care about making plays to win games. Fitz has shown an inability to help his teams win games.
Geno, finds a way to help lose them That makes Fitz, sadly the better option. Especially given this roster.
I have to say, I am prob one of the biggest Geno bashers going back to his days at WVU, but I can't ignore his potential. His rookie year, he played well given the circumstances, but Geno regressed his 2nd year in my opinion w/ a better team. Coples is so underrated to fans, statistics aren't everything when it comes to Coples, he does what he is asked to do.
But it IS debatable. As previously stated, Brett Favre, playing for the Jets barely cracked 80. And Mark Sanchez played in two AFCCGs with less than an 80 rating. I think someone posted an article that exposed the secret that DEFENSE wins championships, based on the offensive and defensive ratings. So, I think there's far more to the story than you seem willing to let be discussed (you know, since you've attempted to end debate on it...). I get it: you don't like Smith. But if Smith were the MAJOR issue, the Jets wouldn't have a new GM, a new HC, traded for and drafted more weapons in the receiver corps, wouldn't have brought in FOUR OGs in free agency and the draft. If Smith were the major reason the Jets offense sucked He'd be gone and those other guys would still be here.
My fault, the line play actually was better towards the beginning of the season. I'm not sure it correlated to Winters going down, though, but rather to the competition. They had to face ridiculous D-lines in Detroit, Denver, Buffalo, etc. early in the season, and then the competition level across from them eased up as they got teams who were less stout on the line. As far as the 'hate' being justified, the people calling for him to be released or retire are most definitely unjustified. However, people who acknowledge that this roster is extremely talented and cannot afford to be dragged down by the quarterback are extremely justified. Geno's struggles are far more intense than that of the average young quarterback.
Geno is unknown, Fitz is known. Fitz is not a winning QB, we aren't going anywhere w/ Fitz. It's not likely we go anywhere w/ Geno but at least there is a chance.
I don't see how you could say that this last team was better: Winters was around and he plain and simply sucked (THE worst rated OG in the league). Decker was injured for much of the year and, without him, the receiver corps was virtually the same as it was the year before. The Jets defense generated almost NO turnovers (was on pace for a record few number of turnovers in fact). I think once they got the OL situation squared away (Winters was booted), got Decker and Harvin on the field, Geno played much better. and, statistically, he went from 25 INTs to 13, from 69 to 77 rating. He didn't regress but the defense did and the rest of the offense didn't improve that much while the season was in doubt.
I don't think people around here diminish the job that Coples has been doing. I can see him taking mammoth strides towards becoming good at the new position. When he first started playing OLB he would be overanxious and sprint into the backfield on every play. As an OLB they teach you that if you go unblocked, turn back inside because it's a run play. Initially, Coples would ignore this and sprint upfield to the QB, taking himself out of the play. Now, he is much more disciplined and adheres to this concept with ease (like on the MJD play where he tore his head off). As for you idea of "predetermined positions" this is far from the truth for me. I loved Geno coming out of training camp last year and I thought he was going to have a mammoth season, and I even stood by him through the benching. In fact, my "predetermined position" was that he was good! Not terrible. But after thoroughly watching his performance and responsibilities in every game, it became clear to me that his struggles were well beyond that which could be accounted for by a poor supporting cast. He had a significant share of the blame in the games that we lost.
I think you meant to say that the OL play got better as the season went on because it was not very good at the beginning of the year. And, really, I don't feel that Geno's struggles are any more "intense" than any 2nd year QB. I just think when you struggle and there are many others struggling, with less talent, you can't help them. I do believe that the offensive personnel deficiencies have been significantly addressed. So, I'm not willing to be so kind in my assessments if the level of play does not improve. But I did see an offense with virtually ZERO playmakers the majority of the time Geno was the starter. So, my contention is that you could have had Manning--well, HE wouldn't come here because of those deficiencies--and it probably wouldn't have changed much.
Sure, no argument there...but I feel in most of the games, you could say that about...The secondary, the lack of turnovers created, the number of 3rd downs given up, the number of penalties on offense, the lack of playmakers at the skill positions. I mean, really, expecting a 2nd-year QB with the crap at WR that he had available to lead you to victories seems somewhat unrealistic. Oh wait, Mark Sanchez did it!!
Well Geno was close to 20 pts/game last year, so 6-8 more for a 3rd year qb with weapons shouldn't be impossible. And he has more to throw to than a dbl covered decker this year.
geno has terrible numbers. if you are saying he has been right on with regards to his numbers then you are saying he is terrible. take a look at the list of qbs who have made AFC championships, plenty of scrubs on that list.
Geno has been terrible, Mark was not. the list of "scrubs" that have made it usually do playing in a weak division where they get a bye and a home game needing one win to make it or they did so when their conference was very down- Cutler, Stewart, Eason, etc... we played in a division w/ a dynasty team, had to win 2 games in tough AFC to make title games. You aren't winning 4 road playoff games, making title game apps back to back w/ poor QB play.
mark was terrible. as i mentioned prior, he is statistically the 4th worst qb in NFL history (QB rating, TD:INT) for players with 50 or more starts. I will give him credit in that he performed very well in his 6 playoff games, but due to his awful regular season play he almost kept us from making the playoffs, and he was the biggest reason we missed his last few seasons with the jets.
