Yep. Everything i've seen for a while now has said that the LT job is Fant's to lose.

This is the thing where I don't understand why some don't want us to look at tackle. We lost our swing tackle in Morgan Moses, so now our backup is Connor McDermott, which is not a pretty thought. Nothing against Becton either, but he has proven throughout his fledgling career to be injury prone. The CS has also been rather vocal in some criticism of Becton within the last year/.

It's just hard to stomach taking a contingency plan at #4, and that's coming from the biggest Becton nonbeliever on this board.

Becton is not reliable but it feels too soon to draft the replacement for a guy taken 11th overall before his third year starts. If Becton plays poorly or is still getting injured frequently next season then I'll fully support looking for someone to replace him.

I'd feel a little better with Penning at pick 10, or even after trading back a few spots.

Remember Fant is in last year of his deal also.

You think he's going to go that soon? If so, I agree, unless they do take one of the other T at #4.

Honestly, at this point, I have no idea what Douglas is going to do, but I do have faith he knows what he's doing.

Seriously? How are posters on a Jets fan site that he probably has never read coddling him?

I do think he goes top 20, and it wouldn’t surprise me if closer to 10.
Has all the traits you want in a RT. Great size, athletic, physical and just nasty.
Jets coaches loved him at Senior bowl activities.

    I wouldn’t hate taking a T at 4 either.
Just with the unknown on Becton, plus the possible availability of Penning at 10 or a couple spots later, I like that value more.
Frees them up to take a stud defensive player at 4 like Sauce, Hamilton or an Edge.

Its not just jet fan sites I'm referring to. NC, twitter is national if not worldwide. He's too damn sensitive and too wrapped up in the Twitterverse as most are at his age. Look, you're an old guy and probably don't have much contact with that generation of twitter fiends. They live for twitter, tik tok and all that other shit they relate to that we cannot. Twitter is a big part of his world and his self image which BTW, at his age is still developing. Problem is, it might be TOO BIG. Wanna fix Becton real quick? take his twitter account away and make him concentrate on his game and not what some idiot is saying about him in TwitterWorld.

With the news/uncertainty over Becton, we need some additional security at T. If someone awesome is available at 4/10, great, but it's also fine to take someone in a later round and accept the fact that sometimes if your starter has an injury, there's a bit of a drop-off when your backup comes in.

My concern is that we now have a significant need at Edge, WR, and perhaps at T, and there's a meaningful drop-off in talent between our 1st round picks and our 2nd round picks. I hope JD finds a way to trade 35/38 into the 1st or get us a great FA addition at one of those 3 needs.

You can't have too many good offensive linemen, only too few.

Of course you can. Every pick you spend on one position is a pick you can't spend on a different position, and some positions are more important than OL.

We have one real weakness on the OL currently - Becton, and that's more because we don't know if he'll be healthy than because he's not good. If he can keep his weight down (big if, I know) then we're fine everywhere at OL. Hopefully this last season and Fant potentially taking his spot was a wake up call.

I trust that the front office will be able to extend Fant so I don't think we'll have to worry about LT for another few years, and you don't spend #4 overall on a RT.

It sucks that he's this big of a question mark right now (to us as fans, anyway). And it would be unfortunate to need to use significant draft capital on an OT again, but if the FO & CS truly don't trust him, then an OT is definitely in play in the earlier. I hope it's not the case. Would love to see Becton come back and dominate. But if not, maybe a guy like Bernhard Raimann on Day 2 would make sense. He seems like a good scheme fit:

Until late last year, I had steadfastly refused to join Twitter, but finally did. I see what you're talking about, and I agree that he, like most youth, spend too much time on social media and are too influenced by it, but what's important is that the Jets' CS isn't coddling him. They will set him straight and clear up any confusion he may have from social media. If anything, his confidence would take a hit from social media. I've seen a few posts of support, but 8x more saying that he's a bust, the Jets should trade him, he's lazy, he's dogging it, etc.

No trade ups. That's not how the best GMs operate, especially after trading up last year. If anything, he will be more likely to trade down this year. He can take our Edge at #4, trade #10 down to the mid-teens and then take the OT he wants. He'll then have three 2nd round picks hopefully, and can use two of them on WRs and the other on a S.

that is fair enough. I think if they do go OT at 4, then Becton is either traded or will be the swing tackle. I think that there's an increased focus on Becton this year because of a combination with his injury/recovery last year & us having a young QB who we need to protect. If the line can't protect Zach, then we can kiss any success in the future bye

Gotta agree. There has been a civil war among Jets fans last few drafts and I've been on the "draft OL" side but at some point we gotta at least try to fix other key areas with first round picks.

This has to be serious Becton got hurt game 1 that's the whole season + off-season and still having issues??
I really didn't want another OL pick but at this point anything is on the table
