Scott-to-Jets done Friday, February 27, 2009 Posted By Albert Breer 6:20 PM The Jets and Bart Scott's agents are finalizing a blockbuster deal after a tumultuous day of negotiations. The move solidifies New York at ILB, pairing Scott with rising star David Harris, and puts Baltimore in a precarious position, with Ray Lewis still sitting on the market. Scott's deal is worth about $48 million over six years, with $27 million coming in the first three years of the contract, and approximately $22 million of it guaranteed.
All of you complaining about overpaying/length of the contract... You do realize that Scott will not see Year 6 or even Year 5 of the contract he just signed? Like almost every long-term contract in the NFL, at some point it will be restructured, extended (if he plays really well), or cut (if he doesn't play well) before the contract expires. All that really matters is the guaranteed money, and the cap-cost for the first 3 seasons or so. In that case, 9 million per year for the first 3 seasons is pretty much a bargain for Bart Scott. Vilma just got 7 mil, and Scott is a much better linebacker.
So it's done? I'm on a freaking set all day, checking on the iPhone and freaking out. I'd love some confirmation.
FTR I think this is a fantastic deal, even if it's a little front loaded. Contracts will seriously escalate without a cap next year.
Not like this means anything but I believe Mark Shlereth says this was the best move of the day. Better than the Haynesworth to Washington.....
You have to love Scott. He's just a very good all around linebacker who can do it all. Rush the qb, cover tight ends or backs and he's great against the run. Not to mention that his energy is badly needed on this team. We have such a good core on defense with Jenkins, Ellis, Harris, Pace, Scott, Revis, Rhodes and Lowery. The aggressive defense will get much more out these players then Mangini's read and react defense did. Scott and Ryan should be able to make David Harris into a top tier linebacker if he can stay healthy.
Also, one thing I really love about this signing in comparison to the Pace signing last season, Scott has a resume you can sufficiently look back on what he has done in the NFL and have confidence right away that this guy is going to do great things for your team. While Pace is a great player when the Jets signed him his resume was unimpressive and you did not get the same confidence with him that you get with Scott
Finally we get the official announcement from newyorkjets.com http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/2873--madbacker-bart-scott-becomes-a-jet
Love it, Love it! Funny he was with the Jets all day though, screaming at his agent over a cell-phone. This is going to be a fun team to watch on Defense for a change!
Gotta love this deal as a Jets fan. Scott is young an a very good player. Don't worry about the extra year, he can be cut/extended/restructered, just worry about the guaranteed money which isn't bad at all. Lovin' the Ryan effect already.
Haha love watching QB's holding their heads after he obliterates them. Hopefully he and Mr Newlywed get closely acquainted. I hope he has the mentality that he has an unsettled score to finish with the Cheats........ I read something in one of the Baltimore papers about he was unhappy in training camp because he only knocked 2 helmets off the running backs.
