Kerry Rhodes was an all pro? I know he had one good year but I don't believe he was all pro, correct me if I'm wrong. Did he even make the pro bowl once? I don't see Jordan as contact shy, he has some big hits under his belt and watching a little bit of tape I didn't see that. Maybe I need to watch more film. And why isn't jones on your list? I think he's the best player in the draft and would go number one if not for the concern
Everyone has an opinion, and sees things differently. Of the 3 players mentioned, I see the least amount football instincts and passion in Mingo. BTW, I never have seen Jordan being afraid of contact, he a solid tackler & probably the most well-rounded defensive player of the 3. Like I said we all see things differently, but I feel my POV is in the majority.
Kerry was All Pro 2006. A well deserved All Pro. Jordan doesn't mind hitting quarterbacks or arm-tackle running backs, but he is definitely contact-shy when it comes to dealing with blockers. He doesn't look willing to engage them and trying to beat them. He rather prefer to just keep moving backwards or flat out give up in the hands of the blocker. Might have something to do with his shoulder, but I observed it before he damaged it against Colorado. Edit: Jones: that neck injury. Among a lot of other things, it could be a media story that explodes in the face of Johnson & Johnson ten years from now or so. Otherwise I would probably have him ahead of Mingo.
I had no love for Gholston, but it is easy to say that now. I agree with the combine concept, and is why I specifically called out the drills, and I went back watch more intently. I was 100% against Mingo until I watch the film more closely. I am not or never will be a member of a herd, and will give my unbiased opinion. As far as Minter, it is my opinion that I would like to see Minter in green and white. I have even mocked him in my mocks up until the last one.
Thank you, WW. Sure, he may not be a bust. If the Jets were to draft him I would definitely give him a chance. I personally just dont see it in this guy. I lack the confidence that he'll be able to play in a 3-4 defense- he can not set the edge, and he doesnt convert speed to power like a Von Miller. Mingo has all of the talent in the world, but if he can not use that explosion to create power, he is going to have a tough time being a 3 down linebacker in the NFL (similarly to Aaron Maybin). Also, I understand that he supposedly played contain at LSU, but if he has a hard time producing in college, then he will most definitely have a hard time in the NFL. Only time I would think about him is in the 2nd round, and even then I would be hesitant.
Yes, Mingo probably has the best speed and burst out of any OLB prospect this year (aside from Jordan IMO), but his problem is that he doesnt convert that speed into power. Sound familiar? Aaron Maybin had the same problem. If you struggle to do so against college tackles, you are really going to have a hard time against NFL tackles. He may turn into a great player, but he has a very long way to go IMO and I wouldnt touch that at 9. The difference between players like Ansah and Jordan, and then Mingo is that Ansah and Jordan both have extremely high ceilings like Mingo, but they also have a valuable trait they can fall back on in a worst case scenario. If Ansah doesnt develop as a pass rusher, he still is a quality player vs the run and can set the edge. If Dion Jordan doesnt develop as a pass rusher, he can still be one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL. Now Mingo? If he doesnt develop as a pass rusher, he cant set the edge and cant cover, so he doesnt have much to fall back on.
I didn't think he was all pro with Ed Reed and polumolu being in the conference, thanks for clearing that up. We all just have to wait and see what happens. Last year a lot of us were down on coples and thought we should have takin another player instead of him, Including me. But as the season went on I really like coples and think we made the right decision and am excited to see wilk and coples for years to come creating havoc
As for Mingo being Gholston or Maybin: no he's not. Those guys had stiff bodies and were sensitive minds that would rather sit under an cork tree smelling the flower than bull-rush the QB. Mingo might bust, but not because he's stiff and passive.
... because he's lazy and doesn't play to his potential. I never said Mingo was going to be a Gholston or a bust, just offering you what I've seen in players in the past. I think Mingo will be a decent player, but not worth a Rd 1 value. If he's available in Rd 2 (depending who else is available), I'd draft him, not in the top 10. Gholston was a great on the edge beating weaker RTs in the Big Ten & MAC. The problem that was his only positive technique and that doesn't work in the NFL against superior talent. Zero coverage skills and wouldn't use any force to beat an opponent. What a waste!!
Sounds good man. I'm not arguing with you on the tremendous amount of potential bust in this guy, I'm just trying to hold you back from taking it to that level of already calling him a bust. I don't like Mingo, like you said I'd give him a shot of the Jets were to draft him.
^^^ These posts x10. Once upon a time (1988), there were two LBs who were drafted out of Ohio State. The sexy 1st round "athletic" pick was 6'7" 265 lb. Eric Kumerow, taken by Miami with the #16 pick. His teammate, 6'0", 247 lb. Chris Spielman was taken in the 2nd rd by the Lions ...and the rest was history, a classic example of "it's the size of the 'fight' in the dog that counts." Any Mingo fans reading this, please Google: "Barkevious Mingo vs. Texas A&M, Auburn & Alabama." - gives a very good look at a guy who for all his supposed ability seems to usually be a day late 'n a dollar short when it comes to tracking down the ball. Barkevious Mingo vs Ezekiel Ansah: while this isn't really an apples-to-apples comparison (it's more about the "football player" issue), Ezekiel Ansah is cut from a different cloth than Mingo. Raw as he is, that son-of-a-bitch from BYU is a "football player" what with his passionate motor let alone his ability to get off of a block which the spindly Mingo is not very good at. Misc: OP, that pix of Mingo in Jet green looks more like Stephen Hill with a different number then some bad-ass LB ... besides, do you really want a guy with the name Mingo on the Jets? Barkevious Mingo: clownish-sounding bust. Ezekial Ansah - relentless badass.
This thread is ridiculous. 90% of you guys just repeat what you read and say you "see it on tape." Form your own opinions. Actually watch the tape and see that he is relentless, fast, and disruptive. He wasn't that productive this year. His sophomore year he didn't play nearly as much and was something like second in the SEC in tackles for loss. People on here saying he didn't even have contain responsibility? That's the absolute #1 thing DEs at LSU do, and a lot of the time he doesn't even rush the passer... he ONLY contains. He really wasn't bad against the run and bulked up a bunch since the college season (and before the combine.) Frankly, one of the worst parts of his game to me is his tackling. Lot of arm tackles. He's not a dominant, overpowering college player. His pass rush moves lack and his stats are underwhelming. But the way Rex coaches defensive players in the front seven, and his potential = that's a good formula. He was very disruptive at LSU, especially when single blocked. With Coples and Wilk dominating on the inside, and Rex getting a weapon like Mingo to work with? I like that idea. Do I think the Jets should draft Mingo? Probably not at nine, as i'm not sure he'd be an every down player in year one. But I think he'd be a good fit on the Jets. Obviously, there are red flags, and if Rex, Idzik, and the scouting department don't like him, I don't want him. It seems like guys on here would run through walls if we drafted him, and frankly, i'd do the opposite. If they drafted him that means they seem him fitting and being effective, and with his potential, that's exciting.
Like I said earlier, Mingo is a good player, not a great player worth picking at #9. If he falls to early Round 2, probably won't happen, I'd take him for the Jets. If we draft Mingo at #9 I'd be pissed, his value doesn't measure up to a top 10 player. I'm reasonable in judging value and never will say never on a player at the right price. Too many on this site right off players completely, that's a mistake. Any player can be valuable as long as you don't overpay (poor value/overdraft). I expect Minter possibly to falling into late Rd 1 and could be drafted ahead of the M&M boys. There are some red flags that concern alot of peopkle, that's a fact.
You tell people to "watch actual film"... If you did you would never question Maybin's speed or athletic ability. While on the Jets, he was probably the most gifted athlete on the team. Sometimes that doesnt always equal success and a good football player. Btw, I looked up his 40 time and he ran a 4.59 at his pro-day which seems to match up a lot more with whats on film. Maybe he had a pulled hammy at the combine or something... http://blog.pennlive.com/bobflounders/2009/03/maybin_significantly_lowers_40.html
Can someone explain to me how Gholston was able to beat tackles like Jake Long in college but in the NFL couldn't get a single sack? I didn't watch Gholston directly enough to fully understand why it all went wrong.
Several of us on here have watched several game sof Mingo. Sorry if we don't agree with your view of how good he is. I called him Maybin like after my first two viewings, watch a couple more games and have not been swayed at all to think there is anything more than a decent 43 OLB to be had in Mingo. He is not a DE and his frame is far too slight to be a full time 34 OLB in the NFL, in mu opinion. Just because your a huge fan boy does not make everyone else wrong and them not watching him play. WW and I differ vastly on Ansah's ability o be a 34 OLB, but I don't go around saying he probably does not watch him play. For a valid argument if you want to be taken seriously. You may have done that there, but I honestly quit reading at the insults.
