If he had a QB with a real arm throwing to him he'd be a 60 catch guy. He also has very good hands and a knack for getting open in the redzone so I think he'd probably be either a 10 TD guy or the guy absorbing a lot of double-teams down low and freeing other people up to catch the ball.
But of course we don't have the QB with a real arm stepping onto the field right now, so Baker will continue to be "mediocre" as Chad kills the careers of those around him.
CP's lack of an Arm should correlate to More catches for the TE, not less. TE's generally get open between 1-15 yards out. That sb on the OC.
No way, Chad doesn't have the zip or instincts to get the ball over the middle to Baker- watch some of the previous game tape as Baker is open more than you'd think.
Getting open 1-15 yards out is pretty hard to do when you've got the entire Ohio National Guard stacking the box. Put a QB in there who's a deep threat and who can keep them honest and you'll see Baker flourish.
Baker probably should have kept this thought inhouse. You are part of a team, win as a team, lose as a team.
I agree. It's probably something Baker wishes he never said. But it also makes you wonder how much of that is being said privately in the locker room. Jones was visibly pissed when he was at the podium after the game, but contained himself when asked aout it by just saying, "I'm not the coach." It's just so screwed up though. You're down by 7 with plenty of time and have 3 shots at the end zone from the 4. You've got a guy who is red hot and been averaging over 5 yeards per carry all day (okay, take away the one early big gainer and he still averaged over 4 YPC). Why wouldn't you go with this?
about time someone spoke the truth on this team. Like I have said over and over about this team,"worried about hurting feelings more then winning games".
I agree, Baker is open, but the O isnt designed to go to him. Look at the Buffalo tape. When Ole Nooldearm is laying it up, to McCraphands, and getting picked, Baker is Wide open, In front of CP, at almost the same vertical distance (2 yards short) and headed for the sideline.
I'm sure a lot of you were saying the same thing at the time it occurred. I was astounded at the play call.
But the TE is usually finding small seams in zones and sitting... Chad cannot throw those balls that he needs to squeak between LBs and Ss.... Also on the topic of Baker... I'm sure he'd voiced his displeasure to the coaches about the playcalling prior to this... He sat A LOT during Sunday's game and was replaced by Sean Ryan.... Our coaching staff cannot be immature about this though... Ryan, by my estimation, was in the game for about 1/4 of the snaps where we had a TE in, and he promptly caught zero passes, and gave up a horrendous sack... Baker, receiving and blocking is incredibly important to our success..... I don't want Mangini's ego to force him to bench Baker over this
That's Chad's read to make.... Schott isn't doing a good job overall, but that was a well-designed play, route wise... Chad simply locked onto his first target, a blanketed McCareins, and completely ignored Baker underneath, a guy with sure hands and a knack for getting out of bounds when he needs to... A veteran QB has to recognize the coverage, and his own personnel, and make the throw to Baker or out of bounds in that situation
Right now Chad is crippling this team, Had Kellen been put in after the Bills loss the Jets could be 3-3 with wins against the Giants and Eagles. Hell, if he had started the season this team could have been 5-1. While our season may be close to done, maybe Kellen can rally the troops to 9-7 and we get lucky in the AFC, I know its a prayer, but hey if he's the real deal who knows.
Unless he gets his chance we'll never know. I think the Jets would most likely be 3-3 or 2-4 with Clemens as the starter after Baltimore. The win against Miami likely happens and probably in a win in Buffalo also. Both the Giants and the Eagles games were winnable with better QB play however it's a stretch to think a rookie QB would have outdueled Eli Manning and Donovan McNabb in back to back weeks.
I said that on another thread. Mangini's real mistake this year, was letting Chad back on the field, after Baltimore. His ankle is clearly not 100% (look at the drop off in passing late in the games when the injured ankle tires...) The thing is I don't think its as much a case of a rookie QB outdeuling EM.or DMcDrabb, as the fact is, crappy QB play aside, we should be better than both of those teams right now. And the manner in which those two games were lost (Thanks Chad!) kind of makes that point.
