I think the pronouns in my post were ambiguous so I'll clarify.

Bowles wasn't close to benching Fitz for Petty mid game.

Petty is barely ahead of Hack.

Gailey doesn't think Petty is ready to play (after almost 2 years).

    So, terrible endorsements.

    Per Cimini:

"Jets coach Todd Bowles on why he chose Bryce Petty over Christian Hackenberg as the No. 2 QB: "Bryce has seen more plays than Hack has seen. Bryce has been here a year, and he has a little more experience, so we went that way." Bowles added that Hackenberg is "not too far behind" Petty."

    Yikes.

At some point you need to see what you have in Petty. Jets only have themselves to blame in terms of Petty not being ready to play. Still an awful endorsement for Petty because Hack hasn't had his mechanics "fixed" which according to the QB coach, will be fixed in the off-season.

I don't feel good about these 2 guys right now.

If Hack has improved enough to play,
Great, just effing great. Maybe neither Petty nor Hack are ready to start because Fitz is still getting most or all of the reps in practice. Sit his sorry ass down and give the reps to the youngsters. If not, just fold the franchise already.

At this point does anyone really trust anything Todd Bowles says? I sure don't.

I really hope having these 2 guys doesn't preclude us from looking QB in the draft.

I wonder if Mitch Trubisky will enter the draft? He might return to school. That would give the Jets a yr to evaluate Petty and Hack.

It does not matter Big Cat, this CS is awful.

The Jets could have selected Young, Staubach, Montana, Dan Marino and they would have ruined all of them, this franchise has never had a CS that has been good enough to keep around or good enough to develope QBs.

If Hack REALLY has caught up with Petty, then Petty is completely useless as a Qb prospect and should be traded before the deadline or simply released. There is no reason to keep TWO Qb projects on the roster. Since Petty sucks according to Bowles, then he should be moved. That way, Mac's 2nd rd. project can show us just how much he's progressed from his All American days at Penn State.

Too bad Mac didn't trade Petty when other teams wanted him and perhaps got a 4th, 5th or 6th in return. This kid is gonna either be ruined if he stays here or fckd without so much as a reach around by an organization that has been Qb blind even before they got lucky with Pennington. The organization seems to be determined that Hack surpassed Petty so, why not just trade or release the kid now? They've gotta make this competition "look good". Remember, this is the franchise that's famous for rigged competition. Geno vs. Sanchez is the most recent of these. Another case where a Gm had his Qb candidate set up to win by his HC.

This is the NFL franchise where Qb's come to die.. :(

I don't see how Hackenberg being close to Petty in the CS eyes is a negative. Petty would've gotten no reps all season last year as the 3 and this year he was injured most the year. They are on equal ground, they should be close. If one was looking better than the other consistently in practice I would worry that one of them is bad

It was Bowles' commentary.. The HC obviously has no faith in Petty so I don't see this ending well. Saw this movie with Geno v Sanchez.

So, Hack went from throwing dirtballs to not too far behind Petty? If that's the case, why keep Petty around since obviously Petty hasn't made any progress in 2 years. I find it very hard to believe that Petty's shoulder bruise caused him to regress 2 years! Not buying it man..

You're overreacting. Even if Hack caught up with Petty, and won a clear competition with him (he hasn't) having two young QBs with potential on the roster for pennies is valuable. What if Hack won the competition, started and proceeded to snap his arm in half in his first start (knock on wood).

Petty is getting paid, Hack is getting paid, chances will be given just not today.

One has "serious" mechanic issues [Hack], and the other is a QB coming from the spread where the terminology and pro style concepts are foreign. Petty should be farther apart in terms of progression after an off-season of learning the pro style offense. Petty having no reps unlike a Dak Prescott probably set him back big time. Though, I wonder if Dak Prescott could identify a Mike Linebacker during OTAs. He was a QB that came from a spread.

This situation as a whole was handled incorrectly.

If this franchise had any history whatsoever with successful Qb development, I'd be a bit more optimistic but that isn't the case. My point is if Petty, with an addition year under his belt just being on the roster is now even with Hack who should have been red shirted, what does that tell you about the view of the FO/CS on both Qb's? The Jets drafted Hack in the 2nd rd and now find themselves in the position of justifying that pick to avoid looking foolish.

I mean he could've just said that to maintain Hack's confidence as he continues to grow as a player. On the flip side though, those words could hurt Petty's, so IDK.

I'm not reading too much into it.

I don't think Petty has regressed. The only real issues with him all along are learning to read more complex NFL Ds, going through his progressions, and taking snaps from under center. Hack didn't have any of those issues really. He didn't read more complex NFL Ds at PSU but was reading Ds and going through his progressions (when he had time). The issue with Hack is his fundamentals. If he has been working on his fundamentals, then it's not that hard for me to believe that he has closed the gap on Petty., with Petty being hurt and not able to practice for 6 weeks. QBs can only learn so much watching film and practice, then they have to be able to practice with the players they will be leading, and develop timing and chemistry, and put into practice what they learned watching. Then with success on the field, their confidence grows. Not being able to practice for 6 weeks made Petty rusty, which would affect his confidence a little because he knows the timing is off with receivers. Not having worked with the first unit, they aren't used to him and his cadence and he isn't used to them, so their confidence in each other is lacking.

Aside from that, there could be an agenda or pressure from Mac to favor Hack. I sure hope not, unless Hack is truly that much better a prospect than Petty.

idk. lets see how it plays out. I wouldn't say the situation has been handled incorrectly. They are taking their time and letting the players learn and earn the spot for once.
