Revis was paid a signing bonus when he signed the new deal in 2010. He got all of that money up front, but it was a multi year deal, so the cap hit was spread over all the length of the contract. Even though we have paid Revis the money, only part of the bonus has counted against the cap. If he were traded then the rest of the bonus we have already paid him would count against our cap this year. The contract was seven years voiding to 4, so it is likely only 2/7ths of the bonus has counted against the cap so far, meaning were he traded we'd have the remaining 5/7ths counting against our 2012 cap after he left.
Saying that to be worthy of his pick he should be good enough to be most teams #1 CB is a pretty crazy standard to hold him to. That would make him what, top 10, top 5 the league in his second year? How do you assess that when you've basically only seen him play the nickel? After his up and down play in his rookie year I think it's perfectly reasonable that they would want two starting caliber CBs on the roster along with Wilson going into 2011. I don't see them going after Aso/Cro as an indictment of Wilson's ability. I think people's expectations are a little blown out of proportion.
there was a special clause put directly into his contract, that in the event of a trade, the new team would have to repay the broncos the bonus money. in the event he was cut and never added to a new roster, the Broncos would have lost the bonus money.
On the bold comment, I agree. If you have a chance to go after Aso, the second best corner, you have to take a look. It means you are trying to improve. You can argue they were targeting the wrong position in FO, but you can't extrapolate and say that means they didn't trust Wilson unless you (not you specifically, just in general) have insider knowledge On the underlined, agree also. We have the best corner, and a corner that could be a number 1 corner on a lot of NFL teams. Wilson is not going to look like them in year 2. I think Wilson is a solid corner.
It wasn't a bonus and hadn't counted against the Broncos' cap. They just gave him future pay in advance.
