I've had posters tell me I am wrong to put junc on ignore. But from my perspective he ruins enough threads here despite my having him on ignore. I know what he's saying more or less anyway, and your list sums it up. It would be far worse if I took him off ignore. I offer my experience to all who post here for consideration.
and another gutless poster that does nothing but talk about me. the club of our worst posters is now complete
quick question for you guys, how come the good posters don't need to put me on ignore? How come posters that people actually respect don't need to put me on ignore? it's ok to bash my opinions and disagree w/ me but be an adult and attack my arguments rather than being gutless and afraid to debate me.
Great post. A very wonderful time to be a Jet fan. I was ecstatic when they chose Ken. We had great receivers but the football gods along with dirty mud field Shula(bellicheat may have learned a lesson here) did us in. I loved the logo and the helmet from that era. Thanks so much for the read.
I was in Manhattan Beach not long ago. It would be cool to run into him. I was a fan. Loved Wesley, Al (obviously), Freeman, and all those guys from the 80s.
I remember that so well. Browning Nagle would do the same thing. He would always throw it high and out in front, basically setting him up to take shot after shot.
Very hard to find. Keep looking on E bay. I found a couple over there. Keep in mind the quality isn't going to be great as the jerseys are nearly 30 years old. I'm hoping the Jets got the 80's uniforms as throw backs with Geno still wearling #7. Then it's just a matter of buying the Geno jersey and changing the nameplate.
I don't specifically remember him being set up by Nagle for head shots. He didn't catch many balls from Nagle but yes Toon, like Chrebet, was fearless and it contributed to their careers ending too soon.
One throw does stick out to me. Preseason against the Eagles in '92 . Nagle threw a seam route very high and Toon was just crushed. It may have been his last concussion.
his last concussion was the one in Denver that ended his career that November. Such a shame, was a great player.
I disagree with this, Junc is stubborn as hell but he's easily one of the best posters here (since I've joined). I got no issue w/ him and his debates. Bring your A game next time.
Ha...I suppose you would. It killed me watching it, and it became very frustrating watching Toon take those hits. Now, he's one of those guys that has serious problems from those concussions
Well, it takes all kinds, I guess. Suit yourself. You might be right, if A stood for, uh, anal outlet.
Yes, but there really wasn't any need to take what was a pleasant read about a much-liked former Jet and NEEDLESSLY turn it into an ad nauseum argument. The point is (and with all due respect), this thread wasn't about who's better. This thread was simply the OP being kind enough to share a very enjoyable read about O'B that was corrupted by contention and subsequent 'me, me, me' bragging. Imho....weak sauce.
Why would anyone say you're wrong to use the ignore feature? This thread's much better reading without seeing the supposed nonsense in it. I just feel more for Kenny every time I read something like this or see him on 30 for 30, he just seems genuinely like a good dude who gets it. I was maybe just starting out to be a football fan when he was playing (I was like 13 when he went to the playoffs with the 8-8 team in his last year as the starter).
And then about 3 weeks later Dennis Byrd's career was over. The team's best offensive and then arguably the best defensive player lost for good.......1992 was an absolute wreck of a year.
1992 was the worst year I think we have ever had, at least in my lifetime. 1991 made playoffs and we looked like we were on the way up had young QB w/ promise who was taking over in 1992 5-0 preseason in '92 even though we lost week 1 Nagle had 360+ yds and almost led us back for the win against what we thought at the time was a tough team. a week later we lost Lageman for the season then later as you noted Toon and Byrd for their careers and they won 4 games total. Brutal year- even worse than 1995 or 1996.
O'Brien's philosophy was not to turn the ball over, and in pursuit of that he did often hold the ball too long and took a beating for it. Don't forget too that the rules for "throwing the ball away" were different then, and grounding was called more often. Kenny was scary accurate though. Check out his highlight videos on YouTube, especially the one where he is participating in the accuracy drills. If he had just a touch more overall quickness, he would have been remembered as a top tier QB.
In fact, he was one of the TOUGHEST QBs I ever saw play. I saw him time and again get up off the turf after a vicious hit to make a play.
For those who count W/L as a QB stat, I don't but may do. in seasons where O'Brien started at least 12 games he had 3 seasons over .500, 3 seasons under .500 and one season at .500. If you move that bar up to at least 14 starts he had 2 seasons over .500, 1 season at .500 and 1 season under .500. He's probably the 2nd best QB the Jets have ever had, but like the best QB the Jets ever had injuries took away much of his career and ability. Of course in Joe's case some of that was self inflicted through Alcohol.
