Raiders | Shell out Friday Thu, 4 Jan 2007 17:43:09 -0800 Updating previous reports, ESPNews reports Oakland Raiders head coach Art Shell will be out as the team's head coach Friday, Jan. 5. However, it is not clear if Shell is being fired or is resigning from his position. What a failed experiment that was, maybe Al Davis can actually find someone to coach the team this year.
Why would anyone want to coach the Raiders? Especially with all the jobs open this year. Atlanta, Miami and Arizona are three very attractive coaching jobs.
Anyone who's dream it is to be a head coach will take any opportunity that presents itself. If someone is a hot head coaching prospect now, they may not be after next year.
What about Bill Callahan? It was his dream to be a NFL head coach and he almost ruined his career by taking the Raiders job. Wasnt he Nebraska's 50th choice to be their coach? I think that the Raiders job will be taken by someone who is completely desperate since any hot shot just might put himself into a better position the following year.
I could actually see Tice ending up there... or even Fassell.... Al Davis is just senile enough to make a brilliant move like that...
If the Raiders would let the head coach act as GM or hire a competent GM to work with the coach, I don't see Oakland as being any worse than anywhere else. They have loyal fans and a great history. They don't have much to work with now but that's fine - expectations are low. No one expects them to be good next year.
Al Davis expects them to win the Super Bowl next year and in RaiderNation, his expectations are the only ones that count.
The Raiders do have talent and the No. 1 pick. If Davis got out of the way this could be a very fast turn around. The Raiders could have a top D and walk away with a great young QB in this draft. Not a bad situation if Davis can be locked in a back room somewhere.
I think that is exactly what's going to happen. Then all he needs to do is hire a good OC and the Raiders are back in business - unfortunately.
Did everybody forget about Al Davis calling Adam Shefter a liar when he said that Oakland was set to fire Art Shell at the end of the season?
No, I for one did not forget that at all, but didn't feel like posting about it. I remember when NJRaider made a little bit of a deal about it in a couple of posts with me. I guess maybe Schefter wasn't such a liar after all.
Yeah, hats off to Schefter, he was right. My only problem was: 1) Running a story like that if Al Davis isn't your source. Even if Al said it to someone else, he has been known to change his mind. 2) I didn't think it took a lot of balls to report that a 2-12 coach (at that time) would be fired after the season. But obviously he was right...
