Not to hijack this thread, but what exactly has the "Belichek Coaching Tree" produced?

The Belichek coaching tree is overrated IMO and teams think that his assistants will magically replicate him. Not the case as its been proven time and time again.

Yeah, if I were going to hire one from his tree, I'd take Romeo Crennel over Josh McDaniels.

And I don't want Romeo Crennel.

and about todd haley.......he was with the jets in various roles for 10 years i think - some while his father was here as well. for those who dont know, dick haley was involved in player personnel while carroll, kotite, and parcells were here. and just to rub u folks more - he lobbied hard for sapp to be picked in 95 instead of brady.

its true he can be pretty intense but he does know his offense. i am not sure he would leave pittsburgh though.

15? Where did you get that number?

    Bowles--Defense
    Ryan--Defense
    Mangini--Defense
    Edwards--Defense
    Groh--Defense
    Parcells--Defense
    Kotite--Defense
    Carroll--Defense
    Coslet--Offense
    Walton--Offense
    Michaels--Defense
    Holtz-- Failure
    Winner-- Losing
    Eubank-- Offense

    2016-1993= 23 years since we've had a primarily Offense-oriented HC.

damn, 15 HC's in 23 years.....i'm no expert, but that doesn't seem good.

Meanwhile Dallas and Pitt combined have had like 5 COMBINED in that timespan

If I had a secure job with the Steelers, Big Ben, Antonio Brown, and Le'veon Bell to work with, and somebody offered me top job with the NY Jets today.....

Not a chance. I'd sit pretty with the Steelers and let some other poor sap come in here and do the first phase of this rebuilding project-- take all the losses and cut/trade all the veterans.

When that guy gets canned, along with the GM, no doubt, I'd be happy to entertain the offer to come in with the new GM and take over a young team without all these disgruntled vets and dead money hanging over me.

That's 9 in 15 years. 14 in 53 years. We used to be a little more patient back before 1990.

    Bowles-- 2015-present
    Ryan-- 2009-2014
    Mangini-- 2006-2008
    Edwards-- 2001-2005
    Groh-- 2000
    Parcells-- 1997-1999
    Kotite-- 1995-1996
    Carroll-- 1994
    Coslet-- 1990-1993
    Walton-- 1983-1989
    Michaels-- 1977-1982
    Holtz-- 1976
    Winner-- 1974-1975
    Eubank-- 1963-1973

List leaves off Ken Shipp, Mike Holovak, Bill Belichick, Bulldog Turner, and Sammy Baugh as Interim Coaches, Coaches who never coached a game, or Titans of New York rather than NY Jets coaches.

you have Kotite as Defense. He was not a defensive coach, he cut his teeth on offense. He was Jets offensive coordinator under Joe Walton before joining the Eagles as OC and eventual HC before Hess made the mistake of hiring him. Kotite is the last HC we've had that came up through the ranks as an offensive coach

You are totally right. For some reason it stuck in my mind that anybody who came from the Buddy Ryan Eagles was obviously a Defensive coach.

    Excellent catch! Thanks!

Also, if Kotite is indicative of what an offense-oriented coach will bring to the table, it's no damn wonder we haven't touched another in 20 years!

ha. True. I would argue that although Parcells I guess traditionally was a defensive coach, by the time we got him he had been a Head Coach for 13 years with 3 Super Bowl appearances. At some point you cross over from being a defensive coach to a HEAD coach with full experience on both sides of the ball.

say what you want about offense/defense but Parcells is really the only guy we've hired since Weeb that was a successful HEAD coach in other places. and they just so happen to be the 2 best coaches we've had. Perhaps thats what were missing... but coaches with a successful pedigree are expensive, coordinators are cheap. No wonder

    Actually, it's 9 HCs in 23 years, and 15 in 43 years.

    14 in 53 years.

    2016-1963=53.

I don't see the 15th coach, unless you're counting Belichick?

53/14 Makes it 3.79 years per coach. Still terrible.

One of the things we should do is WAIT for the right candidate. Some of the best coaching candidates are on SB bound teams. We lost Dan Quinn because of this exact reason. Don't go for an easy hire just because of timing.
