I guess everyone has their own ideas about what Same Old Jets means. I've been a Jets fan since the season before SBIII, and to me the term Same Old Jets isn't only about doing dumb things. It's about hope. It's about the Jets building up our hopes. It's about them doing good things, having good players, and being successful enough, to the point where they get us to think that this can be the time. Then they take that hope, and they *crush* it. They do something stupid to take our hopes, and smash them to smithereens. Like a cigarette butt under a steam roller. Things like: Gastineau hits Bernie Kosar; Curtis Martin fumbles in the AFCCG against the Broncos; the Spike Game; Doug Brien misses two FGs against the Steelers; losing to the Steelers in the 2011 AFCCG, after beating the Pats in Gillette the week before. Those are my Same Old Jets. So far, this team isn't acting like that. They could be building up to it, but I'm not going to let it happen. I'm watching and enjoying the season, but I'm keeping my hopes under control.
This is how I have always viewed the same old jets. The SOJ thing to do this year would be to beat the NE, have things break our way so it is win and win in week 17, then lose to Rex and Bills.
This is precisely my fear. I am a lot more confident about the NE game this week than the Buffalo game next week.
I'm not going to fall for that. I mean it's not fair to the current team. IF you asked Macc or Bowles, wether these are the "Same Ol' Jets." They'd say, "none of that shit happened on my watch!" You have to give your team the opportunity to fail as well as win. If in two or three years, they have completely failed to get ANYWHERE, then you can fly banners and say, "SEE SEE, I TOLD YOU!"
Thanks, I appreciate that, especially since I held season tickets at Shea in the 1970's! There's a lot more than winning and losing when referencing "Same Old Jets." These are the same things referenced by another descriptor of which I am intimately familiar - "Long Suffering Jets Fan."
To say the Jets were never respected after SB3 is just wrong. There are only 5 or 6 'SBs for the ages' that ppl still talk about. SB3 is one of them.
SOJ is real, and was built over many many years by poor ownership, poor leadership, poor coaching, poor drafting, and at times, bad bounces. Everything may have changed this time: 1- We have an owner who is willing to spend tons of money, more money than required, and doesn't interfere with day to day operations. Win. 2- We (may) have finally found a GM in Maccagnan who drafts well, even when not picking at the top, writes contracts that are good for the short AND long term, and has an eye for top and second tier FAs. 3- We (may) have finally found a good/great HC who's good on both sides of the ball and good at keeping his players motivated. This is Todd Bowles rookie season, and he has made mistakes, but he acknowledges them and at least tries to improve his own stuff and his own staff. 4- We (may) finally be putting together a team with enough talent (and depth) to compete at all levels. In all honesty, we really need to see this regime play out 2-3 more years, 2-3 more drafts, 2-3 more FA cycles, 2-3 more training camps, and 2-3 more 16 game seasons with Todd coaching with games on the line. All four arrows (seem) to be pointing up. By 2018, we may be trying to convince the younger fan base that there actually was a SOJ era!
Unless the SOJ come along and everything's gets FUCKED UP. We don't know when SOJ will strike. By the way, why are we Same Old Jets? Why isn't there any Same Old Lions or Same Old Browns, I mean, why us?
Don't some mice have nuts that are like 1/4 the size of their body? I'm just getting an awful image here 'byz.
Regime changes, especially HC's, have occurred before and they all say that same thing. Yet at some point SOJ returned, really for all of them. Having said that, I don't think it will be fair to say SOJ for this regime based on any likely scenarios for the rest of this season. Maybe two embarrassing losses after all the current hope has built. It would take that, I think. In other words the current regime has by turning 4-12 around to at least a winning record bought themselves not only goodwill but at least a temporary reprieve from SOJ. Even if the Jets do not make the playoffs, I think we will all be reasonably optimistic about next season. That is not SOJ, at least not in my book.
I'm definitely not a SOJF but I've fallen for this first year turnaround thing way too many times since Parcells and I'm not falling for it again. Until I see real sustained success it's just another year for me.
I keep rubbing my eyes thinking I'm seeing things but I can't figure this thread out for the life of me...
I've posted elsewhere that Bowles is the 6th straight Jets coach to have a winning season in his first year. So i agree with the first part of your post. As for the second part of your post, I think the jury will still be out. Two losses will be devastating. Keeping in mind that perception becomes reality, the Jets will be killed by a Giants loving media looking to get the attention off the shit show that their season has been, even if the Jets lose a close game tomorrow. Before the season, I felt that a good season with a promising finish, even if it doesn't end in the play-offs would be considered a good foundation for the future. Now, I'm not so sure. Bowles has pros and cons, but overall, I like his style, especially after 6 years of Rex. Mac's work is just beginning and he's got a lot to do for next season. So I want to be optimistic, but I'm afraid the only temporary reprieve we are going to get is if we finish 11-5.
Well, the win over NE means the Jets are at least a 10 win team, so imo even a loss to Buffalo will mean that we fans will be reasonably optimistic about the 16 season, and the trend is upward. If that is a reasonable assessment and I think it is, then we are not as of now SOJ.
