Yeah but their team wasn't very good during those years (02 and 03) either. And he had a year on the bench, then in 2004, bingo, he's damn good. But - they had already drafted Rivers and it was too late... So he had two mediocre years.
The Jets would have played the AFC title games on the road regardless of home playoff games. And in those games our defense wasn't good enough to win, I highly doubt a 'quality free agent QB' would have been able to compensate for the poor defensive performance in those games. I don't know what to make of the offensive line so far this season. First game they got manhandled by DeMarcus Ware which happens so it's hard to be too upset about that. In the rest of the games Mangold was either out or the line was up against weak front 7s.
Probably not , but a free agent qb wouldn't cost a kings ransom in first trading for and then pay. The pick could have been used for a pass rusher etc etc. I am just saying.
Waiting more than two might be a good idea? Two AFC championship games one as a rookie and you are calling for his head? This year he is playing better besides Baltimore and that is with a banged up o-line. Sanchez has that intangible that you cat coach he is a winner. He will get better it normally takes four years for an NFL QB to be good. I wonder what you have been saying about Aaron Rodgers if he was forced to start as a rookie. It is way to early to give up on a young talented QB especially one that wins in the playoffs.
agree and it goes to show us that the most important unit on this team going forward with the type of QB we have is without question the OL.
agree here and i have been thru many a jet QB so my leash is as short as it gets but it is becoming obvious that he needs to be surrounded by a better than average line, HB/TE options, and a running game. of course u can say that about more than half of NFL qb's but sanchez appears to be more dependent on these things now 3 years out.
There are a very small number of NFL QB's in history that have been able to win big with a crappy OL. Ben Roethlisberger is the only one that has won moe than one Super Bowl doing that. Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, those guys were all good enough one way or the other that a bad line didn't cripple the offense. They didn't bring home Lombardi's for the most part because once you get deep into the playoffs a bad offensive line does cripple the offense.
Most teams generally don't give up draft picks for free agents. ...well, maybe the Raiders would, but I don't think anyone past that would.
QB Life Cycle Year 1- Rookie trying to figure out the speed of the game Year 2- Games start to slow down wildly inconsistent showing signs Year 3- D-Coordinators have film on your tendencies usually take a step back as you become more confident in going away form your tendencies Year 4- Showing if you have what it takes to be an elite QB Variables- No QB is good without time look at Brady when he gets pressure even Peyton was being questioned last year when his line was getting him killed. To say Sanchez is looking like a QB that needs a running game a good o-line is true for every QB. Even pass happy teams like Greenbay keep defenses honest wit the run and Aaron Rodgers was not Aaron Rodgers until his line started protecting him. We still do not know what type of QB Sanchez will ultimately be but we do know that we can win with him and that he plays well in the clutch. What we dont know if he will be Aaron Rodgers or Phil Simms I will take either one though.
Your description of Kenny O'Brien is pretty accurate. In fact, I had a name for him buckling: "The O'Brien Praying Mantis Play," because at times he resembled a very large praying mantis in the pocket. He actually looked like he was taking a knee in some cases, much like you'd do at the end of a game. Pressure would come and he'd just fold and get as low as he could. But I don't think El Guapo is going to become our 2nd Kenny O'Brien. He's younger and less experienced than O'Brien was at the time of the Praying Mantis routine, and I think he's got more balls than O'Brien did in retrospect... more desire to hang in there and move around, dump off, shovel if need be, improvise, etc. Checkdowns with El Guapo are somewhat aggrevating lately yes, but imagine a QB with very little thought of checking down, like O' Brien morphed into... "pocket is caving, guess I'll take the knee." God, those were some dismal years. One guy behind me in Sec 227 used to scream at the top of his lungs, "Hey O'Brien, go get a dress on."
I don't really consider the playoff games as a separate factor....you have to look at the body of work. He came into a situation with a solid D and a good O-line....and his progression has been minimal. Most of his decisions are made by people on the side line and relayed to him. He makes a few plays, but he botches easy ones. He seems to make very few changes at the line. We had opportunities to audible into runs from 21 personnel against the Dolphins and instead stuck to strong side runs, right into a blitz. He has some of the pieces a franchise QB needs, but not all... He can be accurate, but his accuracy is inconsistent. He will stand in the pocket and find a player at times, but more frequently appears to be hoping to get rid of the ball as soon as possible. He still throws to the first read too often. I don't know when you expect him to turn the corner. That time is nearing for me. I guess the question becomes this: how many other QB's could get as many starts as Mark has had and still get the benefit of the doubt? I imagine if you talked to other fans, they'd be of the opinion that what we've seen from Sanchez is what we're going to get.
Well they don't seem to have tapes on stafford and freeman? If Sanchez only could get his comp percentage up everybody would be happy, as he is taking far less shots down the field he needs a higher completage. Right now he is just not very accurate, oline or not, I am talking about the 3rd and 2-6 yrs attempts that are more often than not right off the money or unsynced.
It's amazing to me what people are expecting out of Sanchez - a guy who has started only one year of college before coming the the NFL. I think that some people here see Brady on a regular basis and just think that Sanchez in his third year should be able to perform near the same level as one of the best QB's to ever play the game. I see nothing in Sanchez game to indicate that he needs a good D, running game, and protection any more than other yound QB's around the league. You can mame the QB's who perform well without above average offensive lines on one hand. Does Sanchez have issues? Of course, but so do most QB's in the league. This year he's played better than he has in previous regular seasons (save for the Baltimore game - which was a complete offensive cluster****). Will he continue to improve assuming the OL hangs on - who knows? Some people act as thouh we've been waiting forever for Sanchez. This is only his third year. Try being a SF fan and waiting for Alex Smith (there are other examples as well). Let's at least let this season play out before we judge Sanchez. Most of the people here keep harping about the OC and yet many don't take that into account when evaluating Sanchez.
As long as we win a Super Bowl this year, Sanchez can end up being the next Trent Dilfer. I want a ring
Per your last paragraph - He may turn the corner with year. With regards to the amount of games I guess it comes down to many factors (who are the alternative QB's, what has been the team's record, and what you expect his ceiling is). Personally, I think that three full seasons (especially for a guy who only started one year of college) is not an unresonable amount of time.
Good thing your clock isn't what we go by. What would other fans know about a QB besides the box score and not watching the play on the field? All they think is that Sanchez sucks while he's outplayed HOF QBs in their own stadiums when it counts the most. You're going to scrap that play for someone else because he starts slow? The breakout year that we all expected has been hindered by a shit OL for most of the season along with receiving corps that is half new and a running game that has gone to shit. With nothing helping him succeed, he's still playing better than he previous two seasons.
haha i love the el guapo, i gave him the name sancheese a few years ago and its really stuck even when he is doing well i refer to him as sancheese. the other big thing he has over obrien is that his feet arent encased in blocks of cement, the kid can move and actually does very well when improvising outside the pocket... its just a matter of him getting there this year. its been tough for him and he looked much much better after 2.5(edit 1.5) quarters last week but the real deal will be how he does when there are teams getting pressure. hopefully he will stand up and not turn into the preying guapo.
Ahhh....the O'Brien years. Poor bastard. I remember watching a game where Ryan started but went out with an injury. As Kenny was trotting on the field to replace him, Marv Albert had this gem: "And, here comes Ken O'Brien for his weekly beating."
