Its not like we have a huge list of TE's to choose from.. It's either Cumberland, Davis or just trot out another linesman and play without a TE. Cumberland head just doesn't seem to be in it anymore since the new regime arrived. Another holdover that more than likely will be gone by '16.
I think his head wasn't in it long before new regime arrived. He never should have gotten an extension by Idzik - he is perennially among the worst. We had the opportunity to cut him before season started to save $2mm on the cap. Problem is we have no depth esp after amaro went down. Guys like Gresham and even James Casey would have been an upgrade. Oh well
Does a TE even have a recorded catch this year? I don't recall Fitz ever throwing Cumberland's way. He threw to Kellen Davis, but it was not caught.
I would've liked to see Amaro this year. I think he can be an offensive weapon for us. I even got his signed rookie card because I think he could be good. Stupid injuries...
He doesn't really play TE. He's usually in the backfield lining up as a FB (HB) or outside as a receiver or in the slot. But he hasn't really lined up at TE yet.
I went back and watched the game to see how they were deploying him, you'd be surprised. I don't think I saw him play a single snap outside. He was in blocking on a good handful of plays, too. He's essentially playing H-back. Who knows what a "tight end" is in this age of the NFL, but if we're going to call Jace Amaro a tight end then I think we have to call Enunwa the same.
I went back and looked at the 3 times he was targeted against the Colts and he lined up in the slot each time. This was obviously when he was supposed to run routes only. The other times when he was blocking I'm not sure what he played, probably in a FB type role or in the slot blocking, that's what Bowles praised him for. I don't think he could hold up as a traditional TE with how small he is. At 6'2 - 220 pounds linemen and even bigger linebackers would just knock him backwards at the point of attack. Not that we need him there anyway, Kellen Davis does that just fine IMO. Out of the backfield as a FB I've seen him block people though.
The NY Times just posted this article on our TE situation: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/s...passes-to-catch.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0 Nice read.
I don't know the number of snaps he's been on the field but it's highly unusual in 2 games zero targets. I disagree with this and not using Kerley. On the other sign of the coin there's only one ball and a certain number of plays. So in a way I understand it. We just see how productive the TE position can be. If Gailey has no faith in Cumberland then get somebody else.
Not that easy to do. The new CS has already tried to replace Geno and they came up with a Journeyman with a broken leg on the mend. Lucky for us so far, it's worked out. TE's otoh aren't a dime a dozen. At least an upgrade over the marginal talent we already have on the roster.
Jace Amaro has the size and skillset of a TE and does TE things. Quincy Enunwa has the size and skillset of a WR and does very few things.
Cumberland has been an adequate receiver in the past. He can separate and usually can catch the ball. Maybe he'll be more in the offensive game plan sometime this season. He said that targets isn't the only way to evaluate a tight end. But I think it matters a lot.
Agreed. It does seem as if this OC has a specific kind of player he wants at a particular position. If you don't fit that, you don't play. Kerley is a prime example. Since Gailey so far has not made the TE position relevant, you don't see any urgency regarding who's starting there. Basically, without Amaro, Gailey views the TE as a 6th linesman. Fine if you can make it work. Not so good if you don't. Cumberland and Davis may not be the solution at TE, but Gailey will find himself in a position sooner than later that he will have to utilize the TE. Most likely when DC's decide to take away the quick slant.
I like the direction the offense is taking in terms of interchangeable parts, I just worry that we are wasting roster spots on players that don't fit the blueprint. If Kerley is that bad of a fit for the O, then we are wasting his value just using him as a PR and nothing else. He needs to be traded yesterday.
If you're going to use it as a 6th lineman, than use a 6th lineman. Hell, get Leonard Williams a few snaps hitting guys smaller than him in space.
I am sure Macc has looked into a trade. It sucks Saxton didn't make the roster but he's on the practice squad. Sadly, I think we are still going to see Cumberland for a couple more years. We are going to use the upcoming draft to secure some more OL help I am pretty sure.
