this is where I am. I'm even willing to wait and see on the OC before passing judgement. But the OL feels like a disaster-in-waiting--and I don't think we'll have to wait long--and it's inexcusable. And that's why my expectations are another 4th place finish. That, and, you know, tradition.
I agree with the concern on the OL. It doesn’t look very good on paper right now. Not sure I understand the concern with the coordinator. He’s run good adaptable NFL offenses before in his career. Rodgers is going to be at the line with 4-5 plays at his disposable at all times anyways and he’s worked with Hackett to success before. There are countless examples of good coordinators that were terrible head coaches.
Any long time Jets fan who is predicting SB is drunk or senile. But making the playoffs should be a very reasonable expectation. Personally I'll be disappointed if they're "one and done" - assuming they have no major injuries (especially to Rogers), which is a pretty big assumption given our track record I admit. As for Rogers playing in the P.S., I sure hope he doesn't take a snap. Why should he? Even if he needs a couple of games to get familiar with everyone, so what? He'll still be massively better than anyone we've had at QB since Namath. I don't care if we "win" the P.S., the offseason, or the draft season. The only thing that matters is how they do in the regular season.
Which year didn't we have unrealistic expectations in preseason? The only year I can think of is 2017.
The concern is the amount of time Hackett has to implement and teach his system to the folks who haven't played in it before this year. The starters won't get any real time game experience in it until the curtain goes up. I'm not a believer in being able to just flick the switch and everything works like a swiss watch. Rodgers may be a legend, but the other 10 guys have to get up speed PDQ or we're looking at a painful learning curve.
I would agree with the CS, but not the FO. IMO that would be grossly counter-productive. More than likely it could lead to a worse GM, and the new HC would probably change schemes, which would mean turning over the roster yet again, except this time on the fly, and it would be a repeat of the crap that the Jets did for most of the last 50 years. The FO brings in the players, but it's up to the CS to produce the wins. The team has LOTS of talent on it and the team should win at least 9-10 games.
If you think this way, why would you want to get rid of the whole FO, when they brought the team McDonald and the scary front (except for Q), they brought Izzy to the team, they brought the kicker and punter to the team, and they brought Aaron Rodgers here (as well as Sauce, G. Wilson, Reed, Hall, J. Johnson, Adams, Sherwood, AVT, Conklin, Uzomah, Ruckert and others?
I totally disagree. Saleh yes, JD no. JD is the one who brought Rodgers and all the talent we have here. He has done a great job in the grocery shopping. It's up to the cooks to prepare the meal. You get rid of chef, not the one who brought home the prime ingredients.
I don't think that it's a matter of arrogance and saying that they're so good they don't need the work. It's the fear of having one or more of them go down with serious injuries in a game that is basically meaningless in terms of the playoffs.
I am torn on whether I think the starters should play in preseason, but I definitely disagree with the bold. The more snaps the starters have together, the better they will play in games once the season starts. What's the point of settling for losing early games when you can win them? Yes, there is risk involved in playing them in the preseason. I don't understand how coaches can say that joint practices are way better than preseason games. If it's just a practice, there is nothing on the line, it does nothing for playing under the pressure of real games and instilling the spirit of hating losing. The attitude could be even more lackadaisical than preseason games. If Rodgers blows out a knee in a regular season game, is it really any better than it happening in preseason? The end result is the same. If Rodgers is playing in preseason then unless Saleh is as dumb as Rex Ryan or which ever coach got our starting QB hurt in the Snoopy Bowl playing him with backup OL, he would be playing with all the starters around him. There should be a much smaller chance of him getting injured if they're going against the other team's backups, than in going against the best players that team has.
Rodgers doesn't need the snaps, but his teammates probably do, especially his receivers need to get on the same page as Rodgers in terms of the hand signs and nods that change plays. We don't need them running the wrong routes and causing interceptions in regular season games. The OL needs the work to build cohesion and playing as a unit. By holding them out of preseason one is letting fear of injury make all the decisions and affect the team's future. Again, why are practices way more intense than a game? That makes zero sense to me and is totally backwards. Besides, the more intense the action, the more likely someone gets hurt. You keep saying it does nothing, but that is simply not true.
Rodgers said in an interview that he would play in the preseason if that's what Saleh thought the team needed.
Our first seven games are tough. Us going 3-4 or 2-5 is definitely in the realm of possibility. Unless our whole team became Elite in the offseason. I’m expecting a rough start. Too many new parts.
Absolutely not. Believe. Believe heavy. This is what sports is about. This could be the one chip the jets ever get in your lifetime and you want to spend it passively? These things aren't locks. This is done live action. You don't need to be perfect or even the best to win. Sure, talent plays a big role but so does scheme, effort, execution, and just plain dumb luck. Can't control all of them but the ones you can you seem strong at. Things start slow. What matters is who you are in January. No reason this team can't beat any team in this league on any given Sunday.
I think starters should play a few series in the pre season. Just my opinion, but some game speed Before week one is important.
Maybe I’m not paying attention enough around the league but it has felt like the league is pretty much trending towards not playing any starters in the preseason for the most part. I think the live inter squad scrimmages are where the teams are really tinkering with things. You’re not wrong though. It hurts a team with brand new system to implement. But I have to imagine the Hackett-Rodgers relationship and Rodgers knowing the system and being in command at the LOS helps things a lot more than you’re thinking.
With a 17 game season its a bad idea to play the starters much. But they should play one series in each of the last 3 PS games to work on gelling in a game situation. You don't want stupid communication mistakes popping up in the first few games.
