He'll be with us next season. No worth in dealing him , plus it will give us a chance to evaluate how Harris and Vilma can play together

I really can not take stock in what is released to the paper now. The only Tarot Cards that will be played currently are what the Jets do in the FA market. If they picked up guys like Faneca, Lilja or equivalent), and Suggs for example, we would all be extatic. Given that, it begins to dictate direction going into next year and how we posture ourselves in the draft.

If on the other hand, given the talent available in the FA market this year, at least in terms of some of our needs, and then we sit back and do nothing like last year, I would be severely worried about the up-coming season.

it looks like vilma was 13 in total tackels this season, in how many games? im not to sure, i know i saw some games were vilma had 7,8,9, tackles, take into consideration he was hurt most of the season, it would make sense to me to keep him, like i've said before vilma is a great talent, and w/him and harris on the field together, it could only help vilma

exactly. the QB controversy was an issue all season, it is only logical it would be addressed, but addressing it infers no repercussion on Vilma. I don't recall Vilma being traded being an actual issue with the Jets on the field.

a little logical examination helps when discussing matters, not simply reducing scenarios to their simplest factors to falsely create similarities. the logic of the conclusion of this thread is the equivalent of saying that I put water in my pool, and I put water in my plants, therefore if I can swim in my pool I can swim in my plant. you have to ignore the many other factors, namely the difference between pools and plants, to come to that conclusion. same here.

I think Vilma can be good as an outside linebacker. He could even be effective as an inside linebacker in the 3-4 if we get a really good nose tackle. I've been saying it for years- a good nose tackle has to be our #1 priority!

I see two practical reasons why he can, and two why he can't, for starters.

    Why he can not:

-He is used to playing more of an E-W game as the MLB in the 4-3, and it goes against all his previously learned football instincts to have to play more of a N-S game. This also is compounded by his size, and taking on guards in a N-S manner is a disadvantage to him compared with taking on blockers with a head of steam and coming at them from different angles, as he would do in a 4-3.

-He has consistently misplayed his fits in the 3-4, which is why he is often seen running around the wrong side of the pile/DL. He just hasnt done a great job of relearning his position in a different scheme.

    Why he can:

-He is certainly smart enough to relearn what his fits are in the 3-4, and put it into practice, though it goes against all his previously learned football instincts.

-A successful rehab from his surgery will put him back at 100% health wise, and if this occurs, we may be hearing stories next year about how he tried to hide the severity of his knee condition and how much it really affected his play.

I think he will always be a better 4-3 MLB than a 3-4 ILB, and for his sake, i'd like to see him go to a team that will best utilize his skills.

For the Jets sake, if he and Harris can mesh as ILBs, he can be an asset to the team, although he will never shine as brightly as he would in a 4-3 scheme. there are other ILBs who can play the 3-4 as good as or better than Vilma can, so if the Jets can get good value for him, they should pull the trigger on the deal. But he is not going to attract great value coming off knee surgery.

Lastly, though I take things with a grain of salt that media guys say, I found it very interesting that Benigno made a point of saying that Vilma "hated Mangini" following his interview with him. He said it a couple of times, and something tells me he wouldnt have said this on the air if he didnt have some evidence that it was true. If that's true, i dont see Vilma signing an extension after his contract runs out (if he is still a Jet by then) and then the team would have to franchise him if they wanted to keep him after next season.
