I must have missed all the SBs they won w/ him in charge? so far made one and were humiliated like the 80s Broncos
its not about being overconfident. its about building a football team the right way and in a manner which can be sustainable. not throwing big money at ok players and crossing your fingers... thats what got us in the mess we were in in the first place. you look at like pats and steelers. they do it right. they dont overpay anyone. they value draft picks but also arent afraid to move them if the value is there. they arent afraid to lose/lose out on a player if the value isnt there. it looks like idzik is more in that mold. also WTF care if arent a great team next year? this is about building something bigger and more long term. we dont need to address everything and spend our cap money this year. we have a boat load of draft picks, wouldnt it be smart to see which of those does and doesnt work and get free agents next year based off of that? we have geno smith and mark sanchez at QB. even if everything bounces right we arent going to a superbowl. treat this year like it is - year 2 of a rebuild where we are developing young talent
Heh. Well, it may end up beign like that. I was optimistic heading into this off season that the Jets could upgrade Qb. Sure, it is possible Smith will markedly improve this coming season, but i frankly doubt that happens. We'll see some marginal improvement, but I fear they will limit turnovers by using a conservative passing attack. And that just is not enough to get it done in today's NFL, unless you have an awesome D and running game, which the Jets will not have in 2014. So we get to this point, and no FA Qb candidates were out there that the Jet FO felt were right for the team. So far, anyway. There are other options, and it seems logical they might be more inclined to try and get a Qb in the draft than they did, say, a month ago. But the problems with that route remain. I know it sucks that core players like Mangold, Ferguson and Harris are getting older, and by 2015 I think it likely at least one of them, odds being what they are, will decline. Some think they all have declined already. Point being the older core vets will soon have to be replaced. So I think it may have been possible for the Jets to have done more, and they may still surprise us. I am increasingly doubtful, though. That being the case, 2014 is shaping up as an off year, with the main focus going to be on whether they can get enough more out of Smith to make the team a contender in 2015. The Decker contract is an indication the FO is thinking more medium term than short term as far as the prospects for becoming a real contender. How do I feel about that? Not very good, but it is what it is.
actually when we spend in 07 we missed the playoffs and most of those guys were big flops... and after our second AFC game we spent a ton again and went back to missing the playoffs. the guys who helped most during the playoff runs were guys we drafted and developed (revis, mangold, fergeson, green) or traded for (edwards)
do you feel like we had the base to make a run at a title next year had we done things differently in free agency. i think the focus being more on 2015 is the way to go personally.
We missed the playoffs by 1 game..were we that close to Denver or Seattle, of course not but if you get into the playoffs anything can happen and we should be doing what we can to make sure we get there this year.
Well if home grown is your argument, only one of those guys is still on the team... So much for building through the draft.
I can say with 100% confidence that John Elway knows far more about football than you or I ever will.
Bingo..and that is exactly what people don't understand. Trying to build for the future in the NFL is a waste of time. People get hurt, they aren't as good as you thought or they are real good and leave for a better team when their rookie contract is up. It's really difficult to think you can build a team for 4 or 5 years down the road.
sure, what is the point? so does every personnel man in the league but that doesn't stop them from making bad decisions.
Funny you said that as I was about to add "of course unless you have a franchise QB and then maybe you can".
I concede that the options were not clearly there as of the start of FA this off season. But I do think if the Jets had a decent midlevel Qb, still had Revis and Cro, picked up Decker and a quality wideout in the first round of the coming draft, plugged a hole at safety, and maybe one TE signing, they could have contended. Yes I do.
Welll Mike Westoff said this himself On radio while back, that after two Afc title games the Jets thought they were better then they really were and could do no wrong. And I know Mr T isn't there anymore but Rex and Woody Johnnson still are
One last run?I'm glad you think that ,Brady won't stop until he can no longer play at a high level, and there's been no signs of that
I don't know man denvers is beyond cloae.I think Ware,Talib and Sanders really made them a bigger threat in the Afc
Very good question, way too early to answer properly. At first glance I would say the Jets are far from over confident, but rather methodical in their approach to building a team. They don't consider themselves nothing but contenders in a tough division with a number of holes to fill. They intend to continue to do most of it through the draft. They feel they have a very talented young nucleus but too many question marks that need to be answered. Geno clearly the biggest one. I expect some movement in free agency and perhaps even a trade or two but nothing like a "must win now team" approach i.e. NE or Denver. We have way too many unknowns to be in that league and free agency wont help as much as people might think. NE, Denver, Baltimore, Seattle, SF, GB and the like have a clear answer at the key offensive positions and a medium to short window to compliment their strengths to put them over the top, while we are still trying to determine if we have what it takes at the most key position of all - QB You don't assess overall team improvement after a handful of days of free agency. You address it after the draft is done, trades are completed, players have a chance to shine in training camp and the final roster is finalized. Then we can revisit this and say - have we gained ground on the competition or not? What QB performance will be see in 2014 - the last 4 games or the first 12? In the meantime I think that Idzik is trying to bring in some real talent through free agency within financial reason. So far it looks a bit gloomy, but we don't know for sure what caused us to miss out on some very good value players (in our view) Was it us or simply no interest by them? I think when is all well and done we will field a significantly better team this year than last. Now, how we stack up in closing the gap against the competition - well that remains to be determined. I choose to remain positive. Frankly I never expected an 8-8 record last year, so why not a slight improvement from that this year.
I honestly think the Jets aren't respected around the league like they were in Rexs first years, they have had a lot of bad things happen and haven't made playoffs .So its def possible that playera just disnt wanna play here, buti still think guys wanna play foe Rex especially defensive players
how do you determine whether a team is confident or overconfident? what's the differentiation that allows you to make the claim that they were overconfident going into 2011 and this year, and not simply confident? I never understood why fans get so insecure about the teams they follow, and make up reasons to be worried.
