Totally disagree. He has a lot of potential, still raw, but instead of fucking with him in a position he is not best suited for and keep him at strong safety...like our new CS is sure to do, we will see how good he can become.
The truth of the matter is that we have 3 capable SSs on the roster. I hope the new CS does not "anoint" Pryor as our starter simply because he was a first round pick. Let them compete and may the best man win.
were one good player away from being a super bowl contender and that is an elite qb francesa put it perfectly last week when he said outside of qb the jets roster is much better then the colts but the jets need to hit on qb one of these days (years, decades etc.....)
Guys, let me throw a bombshell to absolutely fire your angry souls out. Anything to keep us away from the deflated balls BS. Here it goes: 1- Things are not that bad. We are only one key player away from having a meaningful season, just one. A QB. If we can get a QB that can minimize mistakes, keep us somewhat unpredictable and control the pace with some quick passes 50% of the time, we can move from an irrelevant 4 win team to a team that merits consideration each and every Sunday....Instant improvement in wins by at least 3 more. 2- After the QB, if we can get help to the secondary, via one or two vets, role players if you will, to boost our youngsters we can be in the hunt. 3- Add beef to the OL via the draft, ad we are there. Our critical piece is the QB, that in-and-of itself can give you worst case three more wins....We have more talent than we think. We need to play to their strengths, and stop the experiments. Fire away
An elite QB could probably get this roster a wildcard berth and maybe a playoff win but no Superbowl.
As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing at which to fire away. I think the difference in Coaching Staffs alone can probably account for an additional 2 wins. (Without clock mismanagement, lack of adjustments, lack of discipline and lack of holding players accountable, and with a HC that excels at making in game adjustments, an OC that tailors his offense to suit the talent he has at hand and gets the most out of his players, and not being a cinch to lose following the bye week, 2 additional wins should be pretty easy.) Add in the QB you mention, and filling some holes with better players, including upgrading the OL, and I see no reason this team can't win at least 2, maybe 3 additional games. It might take everything falling just right, but I think it's possible for the team to win 8-9 games this season.
you nailed the 5 positions correctly imo.. was hoping Pryor could fill the FS spot, as drafting a SS that high with so many other needs does not make sense. especially considering we had Landry, Allen, and Jarrett who could all play SS. Pryor failed when in the single high S role this year, but as a rook. will be interesting to see whether he can grow into that role, or if the coaching staff simply moves him into SS full time. i'd bring in a veteran alternative, but wouldn't make it as high a priority as the other positions u listed. would also re-sign Landry in addition to the FA signing, as i can see us playing a lot of 3 S sets in Bowles D (and we need the depth).
If one of them is an above-average QB and the other is an above-average cornerback - they are only 2 players away from being SB contenders. And frankly, if you get a Pro Bowl QB, you might only be one player away from being a SB contender.
Good QB play and an improved secondary alone would give this team a huge boost. I really don't see why we can't make a drastic turnaround with a few key acquisitions and some contributors out of the draft. Notice I said "good" QB play, not "great". With our defensive line, you add a solid secondary and improve the LB position, this is a defense that can keep games low scoring.
Thanks BTQ, appreciate your feed back, I agree with you about the safety positions, your right about Bowles using more safeties in his scheme, he did it with the cardinals. I would not put it #1 on my list but I would address it after everything else. I have to give NC jets fan some credit, as he has done everything but fly a banner over jets camp emphasizing the jets needing an impact OLB, I always think about Lawrence Taylor wrecking havoc from that position, not saying we are getting a future HOF, but it must be addressed.
I think this is pretty spot on actually. We have pretty good pieces on offense, but without that QB you're referring to our offense appears to be God awful. We get that QB, Decker becomes a better WR, so does Harvin, Kerley, Amaro, etc. Ivory is a good RB, probably not an elite RB, but a good one nonetheless. As for defense, I think secondary is our only immediate concern. We do need to get younger at LB, but that can wait for a year or two. DL is stacked. If we could get a good to great QB, a solid FS(actual FS, not SS), a CB or two, and an OG, I think we'd be in playoff contention, probably not competing for the Lombardi, but this would certainly be the first step in the right direction. Dream offseason for me: Draft Mariota at 6, sign Rahim Moore, Cromartie and/or Maxwell(depending on asking price), and sign Franklin/Iupati/Boling(whoever the FO/CS prefer. We would have to wait on Mariota for a year for him to be ready IMO but we could lay the foundation for when he is ready if we play it smart in FA.
I don't think we are as bad as what we played this year. Pryor had a rough year, but he was put in a bad situation as a rook playing with mediocre CB's. Allen looked good at times, but he played out of position a bunch. Moore or another good vet QB, wins us 3 more games last season. 4-5 good players puts us in the play-offs this year. 1-2 OL, QB, 1 CB and a solid receiver. Prediction... 10-6.
Excellent point about the sheer improvement due to the CS. As I now look back without my rose colored glasses at Rex's strengths and weaknesses, I have recurring nightmares of inopportune and unnecessary time outs that killed our ability to come back from close games, wild cat plays that were devastating momentum killers, and above all unacceptable lack of preparation after a buy. Areas ripe for improvement with the new CS. Perhaps the biggest area of immediate upgrade is to be able to change game plan on the spot based on the other teams adjustments. Can not count the times we played like gang busters for 2 quarters and once the other team adjusted accordingly we stubbornly kept doing the same thing. Add the fact that to a large extent we squandered a fair part of the 12 hard to come by picks and I can not wait to see what this new regime can do. In retrospect at least a year to late, but I'm happy as it can be.
