This is precisely why we should get something for Pennington now and draft Flacco in the second round. If Clemens sucks, and we wait to draft somebody in 2009, they won't be ready until 2010 at the earliest.
Pennington was awful last season, but Clemens was just as bad. Pennington led a team with no running game and no big play receivers to the playoffs just 14 months ago. I'm not saying he could do it again, nor am I saying he should be the starter, but he may be a better QB now than Clemens.
no such thing as building -- jets signed Jenkins and Faneca for multi year deals, they have the 6th pick in the draft, they will be improved all around next year just by those 2 deals today. No reason this team can't contend.
I will say this about Jenkins. He has the kind of talent to make other people adjust to him. I think he transitions easy and is a force if he is healthy. He is not a rook and he is not a stiff. I agree about the WR. It is an absolute. Without it we do not win next year. We may not even play .500 ball.
Better yet, let's postpone all wins for the next 5 years. The more losses the better. This way we can win a SB in year 6.
First fix the OL, then fix the pass rush. Our skill players need a level playing field. Whichever quarterback wins the competition behind a STERLING vicious OL, his command of BS' excellent system will keep the defense fresh off the field and together they will win games. Please don't confuse raw potential with competent professionals who know their job and everybody else's on the OL cold. Raw potential will lose every time.
I agree I don't know how anybody has any confidence in writing Clemens down as the 08 QB. If the coaching staff loved him so much, there's no reason it took that long to get him into games last year. I firmly believe that Mangini is telling the truth that there will be a QB competition in camp. I could be off, but I believe him. If he thinks Chad is a better option to win, I guarantee he'll put him behind center. You don't sign Faneca and Jenkins to win three years down the road; these guys help the team today and Mangini will go with the QB that helps the team win games in 2008. Like others have said, the modern NFL has so much parity that there are very few truly rebuilding teams. The Jets were a few plays from being a 7-8 win team last year and next year's team looks like its going to be much, much better. I don't want to derail this thread, but I think with a revamped O-line (and thus a solid running game), Chad has the chance to have a very good season.
Gentlemen, last year we were very laid back in the early going of free agency and saw a lot of good players (that we could have used) get signed early. One look at our record last season shows how successful that strategy was. Though our managing staff will never admit they made a mistake, I've never seen them make the same one twice. This season, we are taking a more pro-active approach. If we fill all the holes on our offensive and defensive lines, I see us on the 2 year plan. That being us getting some big play types (one or two on either side of the ball) once we build a solid core. So far, so good.
As I've said all along, we ALREADY HAVE the skill players to make it happen. Now, by building up these lines and drafting smartly, the sky's the limit!
we will go 10-6 then be a superbowl contender for 4 years, there i said it, so what you want to fight about it
QFT. It's how most football teams are run that way...but I think it's BS that fans say there's no such thing as rebuilding anymore. When a franchise is in complete shambles, it's not going to be easy to overhaul in one or even two winters. We were in that position...no cap room...aging roster...little long term talent starting...finally getting the cap fixed and building a certain atmosphere in the locking room the FO can go all out.
