The Pack was held back by a dumbass HC who is showing with the Cowboys that Rodgers gets all the credit for the Pack's sucess since he's been starting. I still can't believe that some posters here wanted to hire that dumbass.
I think my favorite thing about Wilson is his smarts. We always hear stories about guys spending extra time in film study but its usually just talk. Its clearly the truth with Zach. He is reading and diagnosing defenses pretty quickly, and it showed on Sunday. Most of the time he knew pre-snap where the soft spots were going to be and which receiver was hitting it. When they switched to cover 2 he recognized it immediately and began shredding it. We haven't had a QB like this since Chad. Bilichek will be a good test here. Compared to Lawrence, who I think is as talented as Zach, you can see the difference. I get Lawrence in a bad situation but two of his picks were because he misread the defense and made unadvised throws into the teeth of it. If feels like Lawrence is going to rely on his talent and just ride his time out in Jacksonville while Zach isn't content to just rely on his talent. He is preparing at a high level and applying it in game. That is the how champions play.
Yessir. EXACTLY. Once a team lucks out and lands a franchise QB, that's when the REAL work begins. Teams HAVE to have a great GM and a great coaching staff, or the FQB really wont matter too much. I HOPE Joe Douglas is as good at his job as Zack Wilson will be at his...
the throw to mims from an alternate angle is impressive https://www.reddit.com/r/nyjets/com.../?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
X Factor does a nice play by play video breakdown of Wilson's game 1 performance. Definitely worth the time to watch. https://jetsxfactor.com/2021/09/14/zach-wilson-film-ny-jets-carolina-panthers/
I disagree that Mims does not fit this system. He may not be a "perfect" fit, but outside of Davis, none of our other WRs are perfect fits, either. In addition to being excellent at YAC, WRs in this scheme are supposed to be good blockers. Only Davis and Mims are. I think that any OC that doesn't adapt his "scheme" to the talent on hand, and can't find a way to use a player with Mims' talent is a fool. Not only are they not taking advantage of his talents and holding back his development, but they're ruining his trade value as well. A rebuilding team cannot afford to waste talent or trade value of players that they think aren't good fits. LaFleur and Saleh should have been clear from the start that they weren't going to give Mims a chance, and JD could have then traded him and gotten a valuable asset in return.
Yup...Zack had one of those too. Not sure if Zack mis-read the D or just didn't see LBer #7 sitting there. I know Zack saw #7 a bit later and that delayed blitz up the middle. But overall I think Zack did really, really good. But I feel bad for Zack in his opening game. He was sacked 6 times and hit 10 more. That's 16 drop backs that he got hammered. And at least 1 of those could of killed him. Some QBs get thru entire games w/o ever getting touched .But you know what....Zack never got happy feet, even after that crushing sack that knocked the wind out of him. He threw a TD pass 2 plays later. That's the thing that impressed me most about Zack...he stood tall in the face of brutal pressure and made good plays/decisions. I hope he can continue that until our oline figures things out.
Zach played well he did not play great. For a rookie in his first game he played exceptional. He will only get better at picking up blitzes, setting up the blocking and knowing what throws he can make. Pretty impressive how he was going through his progression week 1 game 1 even though he did not always make the correct decision.
Ya I get it. We're expecting too much from a rookie player. BUT, if he had made the basket catch on that 50 yarder, we probably win the game. That's gotta be eating at him. Also, I wonder why Zack only targeted Moore like 3 times throughout the entire game. Moore was in for a ton of snaps. Have Zack and Moore not played all that much together during TC?
Lafleur runs a west coast offense which is a quick twitch wide receiver who runs polished routes. Mims has never been a good route runner and often times won one on one matchups because of his size. The style of offense we run is in a much tighter space and requires crisp routes. This is why guys like Elijah Moore and Braxton Berrios are seeing a lot of playing time. Mims is a very talented receiver, but his style of play does not seem to be a fit, in my opinion. Again, that has been made clear in his lack of playing time. Corey Davis is a very good route runner. Mims is not
That pass is the one I referred to as a pass interference that should have been called. The defenders are was completely across his body blocking his ability to lift his arms. I don't blame him too much for that one
Plus we have to remember that Zack wasn't hit/sacked much at BYU, especially his last season. And he hasn't been touched the last 6 months of OTAs and TC. So Sunday HAD to be a rude welcome to the nfl game. Zack got hit/sacked more in that one game than in his entire last yr at BYU plus TC. That's a LOT of hits for anyone to take, let alone a kid playing his first game. Hats off to Zack for his toughness. He put a lot of concerns to rest with his first game.
Yeah it was 'kind off' PI, but even with the contact the ball went right through Moore's arms as he was falling down and to the side. PI for sure, but still could have been caught (it would have been a highlight catch though). Just hope to see a lot more of him in NE. Would love for Zack and Moore to have a great connection.
All signs lead to this coming true. They both had a great connection in training camp. I expect a lot of different good things against New England. We may not win that game but I see a lot of changes for the better. Time will tell!
Was Jerry Rice a quick-twitch WR? No. If the only type of WR who can function in this offensive is a quick-twitch type, and one can't get use out of a very talented WR who isn't quick twitch, then imo it's a stupid scheme and we shouldn't be running it. I specifically remember reading that blocking is equally important for WRs in this scheme. So Berrios and Moore don't fit the scheme either because they can't block for shit. I like Berrios, but he is a very limited player. For him to be seeing the field over Mims is criminal and an indictment of our CS imo. It's clear that they're valuing route running over blocking and overall talent, and at this point we need our most talented players on the field, and we need blocking more than we do precise route running. I love Moore, but not for nothing, he looked awful on Sunday. Rookie jitters shouldn't be an excuse. Missing preseason and month of practices shouldn't be an excuse. Mims came off of IR last season, so missed more time than Moore, and in his first game the week after coming off of IR had 4 receptions for 42 yards. Mims should be getting playing time. When you don't have the most talented team and are rebuilding, you have to play players that can contribute, and adapt your scheme. You can't afford to be a purist or too picky about scheme fit. Saleh and LaFleur can worry about that next year or in 2023. Even if they don't see him eventually staying, they should be playing him now using him, getting everything they can out of him, which should help keep his trade value high, and then trade him when they're able to be more picky about scheme fit.
In the post-game interview that ColoradoContrails posted, Zach said that he saw the LB, just made a poor throw or a poor decision to throw there instead of to his checkdown.
I haven't seen stats on how many sacks Zach suffered last year at BYU, but I know that even though he didn't see a lot of pressure, he took some hits both standing in the pocket and delivering, there was a game or two where he ran the ball and hurdled a defender and came down hard, and then there was the Coastal Carolina game where those two Coastal Carolina defenders hit Zach way late. He showed that he can take a hit. We just don't want him to take many, especially not like that one on Sunday.
