Football is not this black and white. Like I said I’m sure there’s someone out there that wants to have this discussion but it’s not me. I’ll bow out.
I see where you're coming from and obviously most of don't have much trust in this regime these days. But it's only been 24 hours into free agency and they have made what sounds like a reasonable starting OL signing and a big upgrade at backup QB. I don't see order of acquisition as indicative of the FO's order of need priority. This process is far more dynamic and the fact is there are still decent OT and WR options in free agency, not to mention their draft picks and trade possibilities.
I am more than willing to admit that you could ultimately be proven correct. I hope that they do not miss out on anyone specific due to a lack of funds spent on resources that were not as big a need as other areas.
None of the signings they made were unnecessary or cost prohibitive. They needed DT help (and still do). They needed a SS - and will save on Clark over retaining Whitehead. CB depth was thin after CB4 with Hall gone. Still need to see the financials for the DT and CB but can't imagine they're much. And they needed to resign Zuerlein. I don't think any of that precludes them from making more OL and WR acquisitions. And there are always ways to restructure contracts to gain more cap space
Joe Douglas is a used car salesman masquerading as an NFL GM. No one should have confidence in him right now...
At the risk of sounding foolish, I think resigning our punter would be a good move…shit, he was the best part of our offense last year
But yah…I get the frustration over addressing defense over offense yet again…no we’re not done, and more to come, but I’d be a lot happier if we get an OT and a WR out of free agency going into the draft.
We wont know the contracts for sure until actual FA begins. By my best estimation we have about 7-8 million left, which doesn't include signing a punter or the draft class. Maybe its more cause we've pushed more money into 25? We haven't signed a SB caliber player yet, so the only thing left is the splash signing that robs our future.
No way these 3 cost $15-20 million against the cap next year. Probably more like $8-10 million, if that.
I've been waiting for you to pop on, Ouchy, and see your take. To be honest, outside re-upping Zuerline, I wish this team would have simply waited and done nothing ala the Cowboys. Simpson is a "whippity do" signing and the rest are just Eh. This draft is deeeeeeeeep in WR's so I'm not sweating there. What I want to see is a game changing, SB caliber signing of a Tackle. This team could have started and ended FA with signing our own we want to keep and O-Line. Considering FA hasn't "technically" begun I'll keep an eye open but this doesn't "feel" like this team is going to do much of anything. We certainly do not have the cash to do a whole lot. Unfortunately, though, to get the best players you have to be quick. The Jets are simply going to wait for 2 weeks and then all of a sudden the best available tackle is going to be sitting there. If the team hasn't "signed" anyone of significance, by the weekend, then it's a better than average bet we are getting no one of consequence. They are going to get ONE shot in the draft of grabbing a starting caliber O-lineman and then it's wash, rinse, repeat 2023 in 2024. I hold firm that, considering the offensive (figuratively and literally) coaching, this team isn't bringing in mid/lower round draft picks and coaching them up to be starting caliber. The ONLY positive, so far, would be Taylor starting in lieu of Wilson WHEN Rodgers goes down. I really have zero faith in this FO.
Don't be surprised if he signs with the Giants. https://nypost.com/2024/01/25/sport...-hire-wont-change-thomas-morsteads-jets-wish/
When has he ever? He's had 2 moments, 2022 draft and the Jamal Adams trade. That's it in over 3 years. Don't expect anything other than same old. They are smarter than all of the rest of the NFL and us fans. They know better. They know they can take lesser quality players and make them excel like top tier free agents. Haven't we seen it over and over during the tenure of this regime with all of the winning they've done?
One problem with FA is the only way a GOOD FA hits the market is if he's current team can't afford to re-up him. Which also makes it really hard for another team to sign him. But it only takes one team to hand out maga-cash (See Huff) and like that, bam, dudes off the market.
My hope is the stronger side of the ball involves minor tweaks in FA and JD doesn't want to waste premium picks toying with idea of plugging a hole on D. I have said it before, picks 1, 3, 4 any combo of best avail talent at OL, WR I am fine with in the draft. Use later picks on guys that drop to injury concerns or just straight BPA...
Off season moves football takes 9 innings to play. Doesbt take one inning to win the game. Let’s see what JD does rest of the next couple of months and drafts. Yeah signing two DTs doesn’t sounds big since we keep rebuilding defense, but I got a feeling JD is going big with draft
