Jets were the third best team in the AFC East at best during Hess reign, with the Fins and then the Bills ruling the roost. A few good years but the Jets were usually back in the pack. For the last 15 years the Jets have been the second best in the AFC East. A distant second to the longest running dynasty since the 70's Steelers but still second. Somewhere in here we've got to get over the top on random chance alone. Hopefully this is the year. The breaks were very bad for the Jets in the early 00's.
As good as our defense was during the 09-10 season they suffered from all the same ills that eventually killed us. The D would play great until the crunch and then break at the worst possible moment. Once the league caught up with the game Ryan was running and he refused to adjust his scheme things got progressively worse. I think the guy has a good defensive mind but he's 100% ego controlled and refuses to evolve his game plans to meet his personnel or the given situation. He managed to get some really nice performances out of that mess we had in the secondary last season. For a hot minute it seemed like he was going to make the jump to full on head coach rather than a glorified DC. Didn't happen and it looks like it may never happen.
