favre is right, remember that play against the pats where coles had the pass short and broke 3 patriots defenders on his way to a TD, cotchery has done the same taking hits and going for more yardage. but coles can be a deep threat aswell, so he is probably saying that to catch defenders off guard. have them thinking he is not planning to do it then he does, whatever.

As facetiously comical as this remark was intended to be, you've inadvertantly hit on why Favre is giving the kind of interviews he's giving.

He's a country boy that's gone to the big city. His first day here was a ridiculous joke, with Bloomberg inviting him to the steps of City Hall no less, but it pounded one thing into him right from the start: Don't give the media around here anything they'll use to hang you with later on.

I think he's a bit intimidated. He even looked a bit bewildered and lost for conversation on the steps of City Hall, as if to say "WTF did this idiot invite me here for anyway?"

So, if you're looking for some sort of bragadocious predictions or positive spin on how good we're going to be, I believe he's probably doing everything he can to downplay the season and lower expectations. That way, if the season doesn't go so well, he can always say he never promised us anything better. And if it turns out we make it to the SB, it's like icing on the cake.

Who knows man....I read about yesterday's interviews too. Look at it this way, of the other teams that he supposedly wanted to go to, neither has a WR you want to throw into deep coverage with either. I don't think he meant he doesn't want to throw a deep ball to them, I think he means he wouldn't want to throw one up for Coles in a Cover 3.

The good news is that after September 2 he doesn't have to set foot in or near New York at all if he doesn't want to. Go about 15-20 minutes west of Florham Park and you get into some nice country with expensive homes.

They can probably find him a home out there in the middle of the woods, rip out the plumbing and cut the water at the curb and install an outhouse in back. Put in a well that you have to pump by hand and disconnect the gas line so you have to chop your own firewood to heat the place.

Then pay a guy to come up from Mississippi and build an honest-to-goodness operating sourmash still somewhere on the property, complete with tanks, distillate lines, firewood and an old restored 1940 Ford pickup to haul the jugs back to the house in.

Bring in some "hired hands" with no teeth and a drawal so thick you can't even understand 'em even if'n they're not chewin' tobaccy, which they'll be a-doin' about 80% of the time. Drag up about a dozen ole' rusty junked cars with no registration and park 'em on the front lawn. Hang an ole' tire from a big tree out back that lets you swing out into the swimmin' hole.

Hell, I'm sure we can make him feel right at home.

To expand on some things said earlier...

I think Favre is very confident, but people/the media seem to be getting their hopes extremly high. I hear nothing but talk of how the pick is going to be a first rounder and how we need to be careful with our second blah blah blah.

Fact of the matter is, while we are a greatly improved team with Brett and our other additions, we are not yet in the upper echelon of teams. We have a long way to go yet, and we still have some key needs. Coles is good, better then what the Pack had last year, but not an AP. Our DL makes me nervous as hell, as does our secondary. Jones has yet to proove himself a capable staring back in a Jets uni.

Suffice, we have alot to be proud of and our expectations should indeed be very high, but not as high as people seem to be putting them.

Maybe Favre's just tired of being the center of attention of the football universe the way he has been for about a month. I'm tired of the hype too, I want to actually see some passes that mean something before I really go ga-ga.

Favre has reportedly got one of the nicest estates you'll ever see.

    Here's an aerial view:

I realize some minuscule little flat in some borough seems so sophisticated to y'all but really, you need to realize people have moved beyond Gone with the Wind. It's pretty offensive. I now live in Birmingham, AL, which consistently rates as one of the top 10 Best U.S. cities to live in.

    Hey, TeriB.
Longtime Packer fan, now also Jet fan, from Huntsville, AL.

No GWTW here!! Thank God for air conditioning, although we do live in the country with 55 acres. The Bears Still Suck!!!

Favre always just says what he thinks, the Jets will get the best he has left, who knows how much that is. Doubt he even knows that for sure.

Another connection, the year before the Jets turned the Pats in for cheating, the Packers tried to, but didn't have the evidence.

Yeah, I heard about that incicent with the Pack trying to turn in the Pats. I thought they had "some" evidence, but Goodell just blew it off.

Hello! See, I hate the way every home and office building in the South is cold enough to store meat. I'm really cold natured, and I wish they'd just give the A/C a rest, lol. I get to Huntsville every now and then on a case, but haven't really spent any time there having a look around. Birmingham's a big change from the Ms. Gulf Coast - I miss the beach. :(

There are a lot of Packer fans in Alabama, because of Bart Starr I think.

Count on it. Game day is game day; the man will definitely show up and answer the bell.

The more I think about this, the more I think even Brett may not quite realize how much he's going to enjoy playing in New York. I said earlier that part of the reason he's so subdued is that he's probably still a little shocked to be something other than a Packer. But to extend that reasoning a little further, I think there are a lot of things he really hasn't enjoyed about being a Packer these last few years. I really don't think he liked TT very much, and just generally didn't seem content with the new regime. I think he's going to enjoy the fresh start a lot more than even he realizes, and from what I know of the guy, he may find it a lot more invigorating than he realizes.

I also agree with the guy who said that Favre's a lot more sophisticated and media-savvy than a lot of people give him credit for. The man's no bumpkin, that's for sure. He's plainspoken and direct, and to a lot of people, that comes across as simpleminded. Those people are underestimating the man. He knows exactly what he's saying. He just doesn't particularly give a rat's ass if other people are confused by it or misinterpret it; he figures that's just their problem. In fact, I think he even gets a bit of a kick out of watching the media twist themselves into pretzels trying to spin what he says into something they can use for their copy. Man's a bit of a prankster, as you'll all come to learn.

coles will probably break more tackles and ankles with favre throwing him the ball, and he will throw it deep, he probably is trying to cut down on his interceptions.. we have to real good recievers who can catch, he knows this, he will throw it deep but not if they have multiple recievers.

I looked at the thread title and I thought "Is this a trick question?"

On a more serious note, bringing Favre in did one thing that absolutely had to be done and that was presenting a huge problem to management: it definitively ended the Chad Pennington era in NY. For that alone the move was worth the midround pick next year.

I believe it's a 50/50 proposition as to whether or not Favre ever plays a full season for the Jets. In fact, he could well retire (again) by the end of training camp if things don't go all that well. In either case, as people have pointed out above, we'll then be looking at a trio of young QB's, which is what we should have been doing last year, and trying to figure out who the guy is.

    Well... hush my mouth!

Seriously, relax a little. My post was tongue-in cheek and nothing you haven't already heard from Jeff Foxworthy or Larry The Cable Guy. My apologies if you found it "pretty offensive,"... just my feeble attempt at some levity around here with all this Brett Freakin' Favre hysteria going on.

While my post was in jest, but you may want to take a look at your own serious impressions of NY area Jets fans. Most of us do not live in "miniscule little flats." My summer rental duplex on Long Beach Island is anything but, with excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean and rated one of the top 20 beaches in the entire country!

But hey, can't we all just get along? I've made plenty of redneck friends over the years, both in college and while jumping out of perfectly good C-130s with the 82nd Airborne Division. Our drop zones were in AL, by the way. Never made it to Birmingham though... too big a city for us country boys from Ft. Bragg, NC.

    Amen, brother.

Interesting article in either today's or yesterday's Star-Ledger about Thomas Jones' take. He's looking forward to being able to run the ball more effectively now with 6 guys in the box as opposed to 7 or 8.... claims Washington will have more success too and they'll be able to get into the secondary more often. Rhodes also said the presence of Favre "keeps him honest," because "he'll embarass you" if you don't stay home and take care of business.

The way I look at it, if Favre doesn't complete a single pass, the trade was still worth it for what we'll have to give up and for finally ridding ourselves of the Dink and Dunk, which held everybody down across the board.

You have NO IDEA what it's like being from the South on the web or in other areas. I read stuff like you wrote, and people assume I'M a bigot!?! And when I lived in N. Dakata - those people talked about and treated Native Americans worse than I'd ever seen humans treated, and they thought I was prejudiced?!? I was born at Keesler AFB to parents from Indiana and Wisconsin, but the Mississippi Coast is where I was born and raised, and I'm darn proud of it.

So, yeah, I'm a little sensitive to this kind of thing. Being on the receiving end of this kind of bigotry is a lot more common than you might think. It's socially acceptable to demean Southerners.

Of course, I have no idea how people in NY live, but see how you had to defend yourself against that one minor offensive comment? Imagine how your comments made me feel. ;)

BTW, my brother was 82nd Airborne in the 90s - he transferred to another unit because he was sickened by all the neo-Nazis in the 82nd, a fact that got national attention a couple of years after that with the execution of a black couple by 82nd soldiers.

So, there's mud to be slung at everyone, if you try hard enough.

No hard feelings, okay? I could use a Guido friend. ;)
