That's an excellent point, and I hadn't really given it much thought. I think the guy's genuinely uncomfortable with being made into some sort of savior; he's been adored by the media most of his career, but not on this big a stage or under this bright a light. It's a long, lo-o-o-ong way from Green Bay to New York, and the poor bastard probably feels more under a microscope than he ever has before.
I think Brett was saying that Coles and Cotchery are not particularly tall recievers that jump up or beat people deep. They are the kind who get open, make the catch and then get yards. BUT you have to keep in mind, he's been heavily watching the film from last year to study up on their tendencies lately. So of course he would think that, because we didn't have a QB who could throw a good ball deep last year, or much passing offense at all. I think as he develops with them, he'll be surprised what they can do.
I just listened to the interview and have come to the conclusion that the season is over and the sky is falling. Oh well, there's always next year. "Of course, I'm very familiar with Laveranues as a player. He and Jerricho [Cotchery] both are a lot like the guys I've been throwing to in Green Bay [Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones]. Quick . . . I think deceptively powerful guys . . . hard to tackle . . . good in and out of space. Are those the type of guys that you want to drop back and throw it deep into coverage? Probably not, but I think these guys are definitely in-space type of players, and we made a living on yards after the catch in Green Bay. And, I'd much rather have it in their hands . . . Laveranues is a prime example - throw him a 5-yard pass, and let him do what he does. Hey, if you can throw a 30-yard pass and complete it, great! But, throw him a 5-yard pass, and if they tackle him right there, it's 5 yards, easy 5 yards. But I would think that they're gonna break most of those tackles - they're gonna get 10, they're gonna get 15, 20, and then every once in a while they're gonna bust a big one." http://www.nypost.com/seven/08142008/sports/jets/favre_stokes_coles_124350.htm
I would agree with that. The other thing is he had success early on at Green Bay, won the Super Bowl in his fifth season there, so he's had automatic credit built up there all these years. I think that's why the bad picks in playoff games like vs Philly and the Giants don't stick to him. It's different here, it's a hungry fanbase that is used to being disappointed and clinging to anything or anyone who they cast as the latest savior. I think that's why Chad got so much flack despite being one of the better QBs we've had here. When he went to the playoffs and we lost it was all his fault, Favre's been doing the same thing in Green Bay since 1997 but up there it was ok because they had already won one there with him.
Favre will be fine. Anything is better than a 4-12 season and that for sure isn't happening this year.
One of the problems - in fact, the biggest problem - with Brett and the media is precisely that he speaks exactly what's on his mind, every time. Which is an admirable quality, but reporters aren't used to hearing it. So they constantly quote him out of context. When he says something like, "I think we're going to have to rely more on the running game this year, because even though we have very good receivers, our running backs are superb, and we'd be fools not to take advantage of that", what reporters hear is "I think we're going to have to rely more on our running game this year", and the headline is "FAVRE SAYS NOT TO COUNT ON HIM THIS YEAR - RECEIVERS NOT UP TO PAR". Personally, the last few years I've just been wishing that every time someone stuck a microphone in his face, he'd just say "no comment", so that eventually the vultures would learn to leave him alone, but that's not who he is and you just have to accept it. You guys are just going to have to get used to it, and take all the stories with a grain of salt.
well i think that's great then, if NY reporters are going to do that, they will lose all their credibility and perhaps some of them can lose their jobs. THAT would be nice. Way too many of those stupid bastards.
Except it never happens that way. If anything the bigger assholes they are the more popular they become. Richard Todd stuffed Steve Serby in a locker in 1981 and Serby is still around and still a tool.
Dear MobiusOne, What Brett said was that he made a living at GB on YAC with these kinds of guys. He really likes the guys here, he says. This is not about a speedster running under a 60 yard pass every third play from the line of scrimmage. That's not football, that's a lot more like track.
LMFAO - I've never heard that story. I'd like to see Kris Jenkins stuff the crypt keeper into a locker.
Maybe Favre is more sophisticated than people give him credit for and is just spreading a little misinformation to bait our opponents. Nothing wrong with some mind games before the season starts. Just like his "tired" arm. I bet he comes out against the Fins firing like a 155 howitzer.
Think about this. He's completely new to this organization, conference, division, etc. It's not like he's played against us for years and he'd have a little background as to what kind of a team we have. What does he have to gain by coming out and making all sorts of predictions based on him being here for a little over a week? Plus, he's in the biggest media-driven market in the world. He's smart enough to realize if he opens his mouth up and things start off a little dicey he could be buried by week 8. I'm not saying that we're a powerhouse team by any stretch at this point, but I'm sure he looks around at what he has to work with on offense and he can't be too disappointed. Guys, we have talent on this team, it's just a matter of getting all the working parts on the same page.
I wouldn't worry if I were you. If Vinny could be picked up and be given the basic play book and rock the NFL for 29 TD's and & picks back in 98 , then Brett Farve will be A.O.K.! Farve is on the spot right now and probably parsing his words in every question that's put to him. Remember you had a gang of green bitching about the New free agents and all the money getting tossed around and then you had Penny let go , so For him to think before he talks or carefully choose his words is understandable. Cotch & Coles are catch in space receivers because the quarter back that they had to contend with couldn't lace it in there on demand; it was either a timing pass to the void or a curl route that left the receiver in space to make the catch. These guys are route runners and deserve a quarter who can keep them from being pummeled going up for a lolly-pop. Finally remember the mantra "One Game at a Time" and you'll be O.K.
EXACTLY. Alot of good points raised in this thread. Favre's in a new environment after being in GB for 16 years of course he's going to feel a little out of place, who wouldn't? All that is normal. Alot of comparisons to the parting of GB and Favre as a marriage and a few times Favre has "relapsed" and he will talk about a GB - just like a new partner would talk about an ex. ABSOLUTELY NORMAL. The getting used to team mates, (thank God for Bubba breaking down Jet plays into "Packer speak"), the new area, the limelight and yes he has already in a sense been annointed the savior. This is THE STORY of the offseason and most likely during the regular season as well. Favre will be fine, shake out the cobwebs, get up to speed and we're set to Jet. No worries, Favre is a proven professional and there is a reason he has lasted sixteen years in this league.
