Actually it took a long time for the NFL (not the AFL) to give credit to the Jets for what SB III accomplished. The revelations that some owners were dead set on breaking the agreement for merger if the Colts won and the changes to the game were kept pretty hidden for a long time. Quarterbacks weren't the untouchables, protected by the rules and refs in those days. A lot of quarterbacks today and future HOFers wouldn't have lasted in that environment. Having watched Namath in camp that season was exciting and the division was very strong between the AFL and NFL amongst teams and fans alike. It was a victory that year not only for the Jets but for the entire AFL. I've waited since the '68 season for another Super Bowl and sometimes we need Namath to show up and say that it can be done, because we've done it before.

Joe was a better passer than Mark is, but Joe was a better passer than pretty much everybody so thats not a knock on Mark really. huge hands, stronger hands/wrist, better touch on the ball etc., Namath could wrap the football with one hand and flick his wrist and throw bullets way downfield. He was a freakishly talented athlete as a young man, especially when he was Mark's age. Some people only remember him as hobbled by multiple knee surgeries but when he was 23 he could still run and jump and dunk a basketball w/ease. He was a football, baseball and basketball star and could have been a pro baseball player if he had chosen to. Just a uniquely gifted athlete. He also was throwing passes to HOFer Don Maynard which certainly helps.
