Rookie ZW makes rookie Darnold look like Peyton Manning. If I had to start ZW and knew I was locked into him for 2 years I would run an Erhardt-Perkins and overload on what the run game does even from that set. I would get a few interchangeable RB's that could cumulatively handle 35-45 rushes a game. I'd get a couple of of extra journeymen OL and I'd run plays in through them from the sidelines, replacing one of the guards or the RT on every 3rd play or so. This would be to keep the linemen fresh and it would be to minimize the chances that ZW did anything but what he was asked to do. I'd go from the smashmouth perspective and build an identity in which the OL and the offense dictated to the defense on a continuous basis. I'd run and run and run it some more and then I'd let ZW take a deep shot downfield a couple of times a drive. Run enough that the defense had to put 8 men in the box to have a chance and then let ZW do the one thing he seems to do well. The box scores would look like 35-45 rushes for 150 yards and 25 passes for another 200+. To get from where the Jets are now to where they'd need to be to do this I'd add 2 or 3 journeymen quality OL and another couple of backs. The other personnel are probably fine. There's one guy the Jets drafted who would probably be great in this type of offense. Michael Carter would get a couple of HB Fly's a game out of it.
It’s exactly what I have been advocating for, the development of a QB should be boring, since he needs a ton of repetition. It’s actually what the Patriots are doing with Mac Jones. Once the foundation is set then the you build on that by allowing him to handle more. It’s really not rocket science, problem is too many fans and coaches alike think the game has to be reinvented and don’t stick to the tried and true ways of what works. I hate using Patriots as an example, but even with Brady as their QB they never stopped running the ball, they were always in the top ten rushing teams in the league. Bellicheat has never abandoned the running game, he know how important it is to winning football games and keeping defenses off balance.
The other thing here though is that the Pats are doing exactly what they did with Brady, just emphasizing the run a bit more. So everybody but Jones knows their role and is capable of performing that role well. The Jets are teaching the new offense to everybody and ignoring the fact that the rookie QB has fallen behind and that the OL has not played enough as a unit to have any cohesion. So coaching, yeah, but organizational failure from top to bottom, more.
During the early Brady years, the Pats also emphasized the run more. Gradually they let Brady start throwing the ball more often as the years progressed. Having a successful running game is a QB's best friend.
Sam has never been good! Maybe a game or 2. Zach needs more time. What did you think he was going to light it up out the gate. It is learning process. Mac is hardly good, he is managing games. He is not too bad, but good is a stretch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
USC likes pretty boy QB's tho and those guys are soooo marketable. The Jets should fire their entire marketing department top to bottom and not replace them until the team has won for a few seasons in a row. That would be great incentive to put a purely functional team on the field instead of the hype the Jets put out there now.
