Seriously, the number of times this has been discussed is crazy. The bottom line is nobody knows what the final career of A.S. will be. I still think it will be more positive than negative, but who knows. But the number of threads that this has generated really is mind boggling...

i'm also willing to wait and see if he can contribute. i remember reading/hearing that last year when they were evaluating Hawk's game film, they kept noticing Schlegel around the ball.

that's not to say he wasn't a reach because he definitely was.

if there's anything positive the FO can make of this, it's that they'll learn not to reach with such a valuable Day 1 pick. if there's another positive, it's that we don't know Schlegel's potential, as he could very well contribute and maybe even get in a regular rotation.

    cheers

They is right here reading the same article a week before the draft that other teams who is trying to figure where the Jets is drafting is also reading is.

When Tannenbaum actually comes out and says Schlegal was a mistake after the draft, or anybody for that matter, not just a side comment of 'privately' that could have been made by Tannenbaum or Tannenbaum's Aunt Tilly, then we is all going to say we is sorry to you, hydro.

I think its a backhanded compliment. Some people are never happy and will always complain about something.

If the best these people can come up with is a 3rd round pick, I would have to say tanny did a damn good job

And every team has the Fans favorite punch bags , in our team its Schlegal and McCareins.
Some of you should be scouts because you've seen something in him that I haven't yet , not in about 120 seconds of plays.

    Here we is...

And think about it this way...if we hadn't "reached" and picked him in the third, then most likely we would have picked him in the fourth...and lost out on one of our 4th round wonder boys...so reach or not...still an excellent move in the end by the Tangenius.

I disagree. you can still get great players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, so a bad pick in either of those is just as bad as a bad 1st rounder...the only difference is the 1st rounder will cost you more money. but missing out on a potentially better player in the 3rd round can have just as much impact as missing out on one in the 1st. just because the 1st rounders get more hype doesn't mean that the impact is actually more.

I'll gladly take one bad pick every year in the draft in the first round if every player selected in the 2nd and 3rd rounds turn into impactful starters.

This isn't hindsight at least on my part. I posted the following on 05-19-2006.

Even if you feel that our pair of 3rd round picks were not reaches, you have to agree they were too draftees that did not fill NEEDs. With Vilma, Barton, Hobson and Kassell, we did not NEED another ILB. We have 2 great young safeties in Rhodes and Coleman; we certainly did not NEED a safety in Day 1 of the draft. It was rumored that the Saints demanded our 2 1rsts (4th and 29th overall) and our 3rd (97th overall) for the 2nd overall pick. At the time, I thought Tanny and Mangini did the right thing by turning down the Saints' proposal because we had simply too many NEEDs to trade 3 Day 1 picks for one player. But had I known we only going to use 3 out of our 5 Day 1 picks on positions of NEEDs and the other 2 on, more than likely, special teams players, I might have reconsidered.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Kellen Clemens, Anthony Schlegel, Eric Smith = 2 immediate starters, 1 potential starter & 2 special teamers next season.

Reggie Bush, Winston Justice, Mark Anderson* = 2 immediate starters & 1 potential starter

I agree that there were better talent and more importantly players that filled more NEEDs on the board. However, I don't agree with some of the players and/or positions that many posters on this thread felt we should have drafted in substitute. I think the NT position will be handled by committee (Robertson, Pouha & Pope) so I wouldn't have drafted Watson. I would have tried to fill our need for a pass rushing DE/OLB hybrid by drafting a guy like Mark Anderson of Alabama, especially since we missed out on Gogong. Another need that I see goes unnoticed is our need for a 3-4 DE. Yes, we have Ellis on one side and Von Oelhoffen on the other but after them there's really only Ball. Plus Von Oelhoffen is just a stop gap. A guy like Rodrique Wright or Anthony Montgomery would add needed depth. Drafting a playmaking WR or 1 more Olinemen wouldn't hurt either.

*Mark Anderson was drafted by the Bears in the 5th Round. In part time duty last year, he had 12 sacks, 28 tackles and 4 forced fumbles. He would have been an ideal fit as a 3-4 OLB playing opposite BT.

Your standards are too low. The key for good teams is not to make mistakes on the 1st Day. Day 2 is where you get a pass.

THe optimist in me believes that something like this was 'leaked' as motivational material. Schlegel being the high character guy that he is should get wind of this and be motivated to the nth degree to prove our FO wrong. Of course as a fan you would hope that these professional players would need no more motivation that the large sums of money that they play for - but what reality should be and is are two different things.

As for the comment that our 3rd round picks did not fill a need - you are completely off base. In the FA era of the NFL depth is always needed. Grooming replacements to step up and fill the shoes of vets is always a need. This isn't Madden - you can't turn off injuries in the game settings and have your cap dedicated to the BPA at each position.

I doubt he'll even be on the jets in 2008--They'll give him one more year so that they won't look too stupid when they cut him.

I don't think Tannenbaum and Mangini care about looking stupid on a cut. Being stupid and keeping a guy who won't help you is worse than looking stupid because you drafted the wrong guy.

In the Bradway years a draft pick would never have gotten cut in the first camp or two. I think this team is regime is much better and smarter than that and they'll make the right decisions regardless of fears of how they'll look.

I think you are right. This regime may make mistakes but they don't compound it like Bradway did by worrying about looking stupid. The Barlow trade is a perfect example. If the trade was done in the Badway era, Barlow would be slated as our starter just not to admit it didn't pan out.

    Count me as another one.

It doesnt necessarily say that they dont think he can play or that they are dissapointed in him, it could just mean that they think they could have gotten him in a later round.

Don't forget, Herm had a lot to do with this too (not wanting to look stupid). The only problem was, Herm had a way of looking stupid even if he tried real hard to not look stupid.

The fate of Anthony Schlegel will not determine the direction of this franchise. Period. I hope, if anything, Tannenbaum and Mangini learn that intangibles are important, but should not be the determining factor. At this point, the hits surpass the misses in their first draft.

That said, a "mistake" and an error I think are two different things. They probably made a mistake in taking him so high; we have yet to see if the decision to draft him was an error. Give the kid a year in the offseason program, a chance to focus on his job and he may yet be a contributor.

I've said it before: I saw him play in '02 vs. Notre Dame while he was at Air Force. He was a singular force vs. ND. I know, I know: he played with weak talent at Air Force, and college ball is college ball. My point is that he's worth giving a chance to see if there's more there than we've seen to date.

We haven't seen anything to date. That's the point, until you actually have a sample size to analyze you're all just guessing that since he didn't play he must suck. So many of you pretend to be 3-4 experts but the bottom line is that insider linebacker in a 3-4 is a position that takes multiple years to learn. Rarely ever does a player in his first two seasons start at that position. I don't know any of you can even for a second try to say that Schlegel was a bust/reach/etc....

In two years if he isn't playing then you can call him a bust but jeez give the guy some time before you destroy him.

Try him out in the middle and see what happens we might have a superstar on our team and we never even gave him a chance.
