Someone showed me similarities on tape between Oliver and fabled jets draft pick Dewayne Robertson. I can never unsee it. Please for the love of god don’t take this guy.
whoever showed you that, probably wasn't very smart ...Oliver was misused as a 3-4 nose tackle in Houston. That's not playing towards Oliver's strengths when he's constantly being triple teamed.
Why is a team that is lacking stars, and has not had an impact defensive player since Darelle Revis a decade ago, trading out of the #3 spot to take a flyer on a lesser-player and a possible #2 pick ? What, so we can draft Christian Hackenberg's brother in the 2nd round ?
We run a 3-4... but I do trust Williams to find a way to use Oliver as a 3-tech should we be foolish enough to pass on Q Williams or Allen.
D rob was all straight line power and decent quickness w a compact build resulting in natural pad level. Oliver is much more explosive, significantly more agile, has rare change of direction D rob never had & has a much larger body of work/level of production than D rob had coming out. Not to mention the lack of degenerative knee condition
Oliver is like an interior defensive lineman and a part time edge rusher all in one. Would I take Oliver over Josh Allen? Probably not. I would rather trade down and take Oliver while picking up a 2nd, over taking Q at 3, but that is just me.
Good points, I guess the undersized talk is why people throw that comparison out there, but they aren't the same player, not even close. Oliver does need to refine his game, a coach like Williams could really help Oliver with his game. A little over dependent on the Bull rush from what I saw.
I think Oliver is going to be the selection Thursday night. all indications are pointing that way. Idk if there is a handshake deal for a trade down or if they will take him at no.3, but all this stuff about Oliver is real - its not a smokescreen
the problem is that why would they feel the need to smokescreen Ed Oliver's name around. Where do they stand to benefit if teams think the Jets like Ed Oliver when they really don't? That's why I think its real, I cannot answer that question
Yes, only 30 meetings which is a challenge. But I heard this on the radio - players designated as "local" are exempt from that total. You can visit with anyone from the NFL's "local" list from your team and it doesn't count towards the 30 meetings.; that includes players from the colleges from the general area and those that grew up in your area as well. This might explain why the Jets have selected an abnormal amount of players from NY/NJ area over the years, they fell in love with them during the visit? It also strikes me as unfair. Imagine Houston or Dallas and all the players that played high school football in Texas. they really get unrestricted visits with that wealth of talent? Oh- none of this has anything to do with Nick Bosa. they should've visited with him, that's a mistake on McCagnan's part
I seriously must be missing something. The jets have announced and ARE apparently going to play a 3-4 defense and plan on playing it a lot. THAT is why they paid a FORTUNE to ILB Mosely (and Williamson last year), and resigned DE Anderson--they are all 3-4 defense players primarily. The 3-4 defense is based on DL being "blockers/occupiers" of OL which allow linebackers to make plays. The jets drafted Leonard Williams in 2015, played him in a 3-4 defense under Todd Toilet, and he never was any kind of playmaker because most DL in a 3-4 are double teamed/occupied. WHY IN THE HELL would the jets draft another DL like Q. Williams OR Oliver at #3, just to occupy blockers????? Q. Williams, Oliver, and Leonard Williams are 4-3 DL who shoot the gaps and make the plays, not occupy OL. IF the jets take Q. Williams or Oliver at #3, they will just become another "out of scheme" player like Leonard Williams. And don't tell me that "Oh, the jets will play a lot of 4-3 defenses also," because that makes little sense with their announced defense and the signing of Mosely and the resigning of Anderson. I am seriously confused on WHY they would waste a great talent (and valuable draft pick) like Oliver or Q. Williams, while playing primarily a 3-4 defense (which does not maximize their talent). I am not afraid to admit when I do not understand something--somebody straighten me out and tell me what I am missing--or is the professed attention in Oliver and Q. Williams just to generate interest in that pick as a prelude to a trade down?
After Ed Oliver’s 3rd consecutive 3 sack season for the jets. “ But but guys he is getting doubled!!” “He just needs some help!!” “PFF says he is slightly above average!!!” Fuck this shit we have been down this road before. Take the damn edge for once.
I can’t speak to the Jets scheme but Oliver is a very good player and worthy of a #3 selection. People need to chill. As to whether Q is a better fit or Allen is a better pick at a struggling position for the Jets is another question, but Oliver is definitely worthy of that selection IMO.
I will not chill when we select another DT who can’t get to the Quarterback while a premium sack master edge sits on the board
I certainly understand the DT vs ER debate, and I agree with you on that. Jets shouldn’t take a DT over an ER imo. But if they do, Oliver is certainly worth the selection. He may not have had pass rush production but it’s not because he can’t rush the passer. He was placed over the nose in a 3-4 defense (he’s 285 lbs) and he was so dominant that he was double and triple teamed. He’ll be a fine rusher.
"a 3-4 DL's job is not sacking the QB! They are meant to take up blockers and allow for our undrafted OLBs to get to the QB!!!"
