I think this behind the counter thing is a regional choice. Playboy was always bold and brassy on the shelves in NYC newsstands, albeit at a higher altitude than your typical 12 year old pair of eyes.
from 2000-2011 i've seen the amount of smut available on AAFES magazine racks decline. by 2004 i'd be lucky to find a stroke worthy print mag while downrange. when i was growing up as a Navy brat, i remember how the top shelves had big bold ADULT MATERIAL placards covering black polybagged Penthouses and Hustlers back in the late 80s and early 1990s
Congrats to them, finally some GOOD news! ...now if only the rest of the incredibly abusive and dangerous pornography industry would do the same! (well, for them I guess that means closing up the smut shops and finding socially-redeeming, honest work). Like the rest of us. ...I mean, really, it's mind-boggling to me that in our supposedly "enlightened" (hardly!) and civilized society we allow a black market industry to operate right under our noses that routinely abuses women, many underage; just rampant abuse throughout, horrific crimes against humanity! smh. Really crazy when you stop to think about it, isn't it.
Look, Playboy has made their $$$ by selling post pubescent girls, just the other side of kiddie porn, not selling snatch. Penthouse always made a point of getting slightly older women, and showing it all.
Back in the late 90's... I spent many a late night video editing in their Beverly Hills office. The walls were lined with artwork that Playboy had commissioned for the magazine over the years...hundreds of amazing pieces. One night I tried to pull a Vargas off the wall...that shit was bolted down tight!
Naked women being taken out of playboy? What's next, bread being taken away from sandwiches? Sex sells, but it's all online now. I think magazines in general have been declining in popularity. It seems to make more sense for playboy to focus on the internet aspect of the marketing instead of removing it from their magazines. People don't really read magazines anymore as is, this will just be the nail in the coffin. There's a huge online porn market that they have failed to take advantage of. This makes me feel so old! I too have memories of sneaking my dad's playboys out of his hiding place in the closet! I even ripped a few pages out hoping he wouldn't notice... he did.
We subscribe to The New Yorker, in print. I was just reading it last night. There's something about the tactile experience of turning pages and not having to hold some f'ing tablet as I read the mag.
I still buy books. Real books. Can't read novels on a tablet or a kindle or the like. I like a good real bookmark too. _
real books are nice but it makes moving a BITCH. I'd rather have the Library of Alexandria on a stick and deal with the nostalgia than have to break my back just moving across town... or pay someone else an outrageous fee to break their back just to move me across town.
Me too. I don't see the advantage of carrying a kindle unit instead of a paperback in additoin to the loss of the direct sensation of reading off a page. It's what I am used to. My dad used to day with an Irish accent "I've seen a lot of changes in me life, and I've been a'gin every one of em."
Gotta tell you man, we're Old. Print is something that is definitely going away in large part in the next generation. My dad says that also about enjoying the feel of a book in his hands. Me, I was a huge reader of books until fairly recently but with declining vision and more competition from other digital pursuits I'm almost all browser and PDF based now. It's just easier to do things in 15 minute segments that slot in well with everything else and reading is one of those things. The only time I actually want a book these days is when I'm sitting under an umbrella somewhere with nothing to do for a couple of hours. Even then a pad is better unless I really want to read that book.
Recent news is that paper book sales are up while ebooks are flat, even declining. But whatever. I don't have a dog in the hunt as it were. I find it amusing though that vinyl is making a bit of a comeback, but there's probably a ceiling to that. I don't think young people sit around in a living room listening to an album much more than a limited group i assume tend to be stoners and, by today's measure, iconoclasts. I have an Ipod that sounds like shit. Yeah it's convenient, but I don't use it that much. We all have our stories and different opinions about htis or that tech device. I personally am fine with print books for the time being. Maybe I change, maybe I don't, as time goes on. We shall see.
I definitely agree. It just feels right. It's like how it feels so much better to read a real book than to read on a kindle. That is actually really surprising with the whole digital revolution, with twitter, instagram, selfies, facebook and all that. It's a little bit reassuring!
and the experiment is over!!!! After only one year, Playboy admits their mistake and brings back boobs & bush http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...287/playboy-snaps-out-of-its-never-nude-phase
