Kristian Dyer, it's on the Metro website - http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/nfl/2014/07/14/source-jets-interested-trading-andre-johnson/ Forget what the link says, the headline is not interested.
Here are three people who deserve Idzik to open up their wallets before Andre: Mo Wilk Jeremy Kerley Snacks Not to mention a draft pick which Idzik does not like to part with There's no chance this move happens. If anything, we should be looking to trade players at positions we have depth at if we might end up cutting them anyway rather than taking on that nasty contract.
33 Years old, salary cap implications in the face of the Jets having even more cap space going into 2015, and revamping the WR corp with the signing of Decker and draftees? The Jets are moving in another direction, this isn't 2009. This story's dead.
The non-interest in Johnson is another indication the FO does not see a playoff run in the coming season.
Well, they did go out and get Chris Johnson. I personally think they're a year away but think they will give it a run. I'm not sure this non-move makes that statement. Heck, the 2009 team doesn't blow this team away in terms of talent overall and that team had a rookie QB. Moving forward, I really hope Idzik learned something from this offseason. My impression was that he was low-balling too many prime to sub-prime free agents and couldn't sign them. I can't believe Patterson was anything more than plan F. This was the deepest, most talented CB FA market I've ever seen and he came up empty. I know he made a strong move for Vontae Davis but passed on everyone else - Talib, Verner, DRC, Munnerlyn, Revis, Thurmond III, among others while missing on upgrading TE with Pettigrew and WR with LaFell both of whom we later learn they were really high on. Maybe I'm wrong on this and he carefully passed over these guys waiting until next year. He had the money though to address those positions and move closer towards playoff contention this year.
The Jets have the cap space to use on Johnson, and while I understand that trading for him could limit flexibility next year, they have the flexibility this year. Remember there were other potential moves they could have made that they did not even try to make, like signing DeSean Jackson, some of the candidates for starting CB's, and the like. So there's that pattern. I happen to think Nelson looked good toward the end of last season. He in particular inspires some, but not a great deal of, confidence. And we all get, I think, that the organization wants to see if Hill stays or should be cut. There's other talent at wideout, too. But none are likely to play at AJ's level. Signing him would give the Jets one of the best wideout groups in the league, imo. They do not have that kind of roster without him.
Somebody still doesn't understand building a team through the draft and using a tiny handful of medium contract FAs to stopgap. The same somebody that thinks he's the best debater on the forum.
Is that the only formula for success? Is that why Denver, NY Giants; NE, Atlanta, NO, Seattle and SF were all aggressive in FA? No one claimed any philosophy here but when you have multiple needs and have cap space, teams do go out and get FA's. If you're suggesting that doesn't happen, please enlighten me. Not to mention the NFL laying down guidelines for a salary floor and a percentage they must spend. To insinuate that the "best" teams don't get FA's is a bit absurd. And in no way did I suggest that this be the only and most preferred course of action. But when you have 40+ million, go out and get some players. No?
I would want Andre simply because the Pats would be all over him if the Texans would want to move him.... Brady with AJ is not something i want to face twice.... Unfortunately it reeks of a trade to the Pats with what Andre wants to play with/for and the OBrian/Beli connection.
Did I say that's the only formula for success? And do any of those teams you mention lack for an answer to Franchise Quarterback? John Idzik, General Manager of the New York Jets, has already laid down his philosophy for building this team. That's what I was referring to. Maybe you should familiarize yourself with it. If you think differently, please enlighten yourself. As far as the salary floor, and your idea that the Jets have 40+ million dollars in cap space. Apparently you have no fucking clue what the Jets' cap number is right now. I'll let you try to put some effort into showing that the Jets have 40+mil in cap space, and then I'll let you know how stupid you look. The Jets do have a solid cap number, and they also have a handful of burgeoning superstars that they need to lock up long term. That cap room is going to come in handy this year in doing just that. But I like the way you aggressively are going after anyone who you think has a different argument than you. All the while trying to trash the owner of this site and telling him to wake up. Good stuff.
I don't think the Pats have a dime left to spend. It sounds like Bill Belichick is going to have his hands full with over 30pages of text messages being used as evidence in the Hernandez trial, and 9 pages of scouting reports that the Pats don't want the world to know about. 30 PAGES of text messages sounds like an awful lot. Maybe the Pats weren't as 'duped' as we were made to believe.
disregard. I could get on board this signing, but I'm also not calling out the FO if they decide to pass. I think the FO is well on its way to building a contender, and although Johnson has intangible skill, he's also on the wrong side of 30. It's a 1-2 year signing at best.
*voice of Howard Cosell* "And THAT, right there!..." is what I'm waiting to see. If the Pats were so in the dark about this guy, why are they dick-dancing around it? AJ: save that cap money instead to extend past the rookie contracts. .....how many days till Cortland??....
That's the only problem with the argument, that I see. Johnson has always displayed himself as a professional, aside from this current holdout, and that retarded decision to represent himself in contract negotiations (in 2008?).
i really don't know much about cap numbers and stuff like that... but don't we have like 2o+ mill right now that will roll over into next season? if so we will have big bank and guys like Dez, DT, Welker, and a few other big named WR will be available. Dez and DT might sign back but if not i wouldn't mind bringing in one of those guys instead of Andre. 2015 FA WR's Dez Bryant Hakeem Nicks Wes Welker Demaryius Thomas <-- MY BOY Roddy White Jeremy Maclin Michael Crabtree Reggie Wayne
Maybe they do have plans to go after him, just waiting until Houston hands him his walking papers? I don't see him playing for Houston this season at all and if nobody offers anything in a trade, isn't it possible they will be almost forced to grant him his release in training camp? Someone has to budge. Then the Jets could go after a more humbled Andre Johnson without having to give up any resources in a trade... Another Chris Johnson scenario???
