I agree that this is probably going to just blow over, but I am very interested in what follows because it will give us a lot of insight into what the dynamic is going to be in Houston. AJ has been so productive, and represents such a financial investment by the Texans, that he has been exempt from the risks associated with speaking against his team for a while. He is basically testing the waters with the new head coach, who comes from the Belichick line. The question is, who draws the line in the sand? If O'Brien sends him packing to Cleveland (the most realistic landing spot), he may not be any more happy than he was in Houston. Johnson does not get to veto a trade, unlike some star players who have it written into their contracts. If O'Brien does not do something about Johnson's public statements, AJ was the one who drew the line and will be a threat as a vocal presence in the locker room.
We acquired Decker in the off-season. We have three young rookies coming in, at least two of which are likely to make the roster. We also have Kerley, Nelson and Ford on the team, not to mention other WRs like Salas, etc. If we acquire him, then how do we play the draftees when they're sitting behind Decker, Kerley, AJ and maybe Nelson/Ford. Let's go through a training camp and at least have some idea of what we can expect from the WR draftees before we start acquiring 30+ year old receivers from other times.
I love AJ, but we have enough receivers on the roster. If we were closer to a super contender then it would be a different story.
You can go ahead and scratch Dallas off that list, they signed Romo to that ridiculous contract and then a year later had to restructure him just to get under the cap, re-signed injury-prone Sean Lee way too early, and let Demarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher go because of it. Dallas is in less of a position to deal with that salary than the Pats. They are teetering towards cap hell.
Ultimately it'll come down to whether or not he asks for and/or demands a trade. They may accommodate him but obviously not to the point where it badly hurts the franchise (poor value in return or by absorbing too much dead money). I can only guess he's disappointed that the Texans didn't get a QB sooner than the 4th round, or maybe via free agency. If he does go on the block, what's the over/under on the number of offers Houston gets? I'd put it at 10 teams, minimum.
I know the Cowboys were in a bind early in the offseason but checking yesterday saw that they've actually got a decent amount of cap room at the moment (around $12M). I don't know how that projects out to future years so good point there. Mainly I was thinking Dallas because this seems like the type of thing Jer-rah likes to do.
Personally I'd have to guess more like 10 teams could inquire, but probably only 4 or so would actually make an offer.
That 12 number for the Cowboys is pre draft pick signings, so you can probably chop off around 4 to that without looking at the projections.
this ain't happening. for so many reasons. there's a better chance of Mark Sanchez returning to the start for the Jets than of Andre Johnson coming here anytime soon
I have to agree with you. I haven't made guarantees about him not coming to the Jets because I just don't want to deal with the people who will argue it, but in all honesty there is no chance in hell he's coming here.
Right, and his cap number is around $11M I think. So it would take some finagling for sure. I'm pretty much thinking, like I was yesterday, that eventually this blows over and he stays right where he is. I can't remember if 2014 is the last year he's under contract but he'll get out soon enough.
Actually his cap number is about $15.6 million, $11 million is what it would have been before the Texans restructured him a number of times over the past couple season to give themselves space.
You gotta love it. Tannenbaum is gone. We're not going to pounce on every big name FA available anymore. That was the old way. This ain't Jets news just because fans would like it to happen. If I could make a rough estimate on how interested the Jets are in Andre Johnson, I'm going to say 0%.
