Seattle hasn't been close to as successful as the Jets were under Tanny. Now that they finally have some pieces they are one of the biggest spenders in FA. They know they have a short window before all their young talent will want to be paid. Perennial force are you kidding me. They beat the Redskins in round 1 with a broken QB.
Quarterback is obviously a necessity, but the other thing those three teams have in common is not trying to act like the Yankees in free agency and then treat the draft as an afterthought. The year Green Bay won it their roster looked like a trauma ward at midseason. Without quality depth not even Rodgers could have saved them. Tanny's philosophy of throw money at your top 10 out of 53 and then just pray no one ever gets injured is completely unsustainable in the best of times, and downright insane for the rest.
We were the best team in football in 08 before Favre got hurt. Seattle is spending now because they know they have a short window. When it's time to pay Wilson and their other young talent they are going to have to purge. They are a win now team just like we were a win now team in Tanny's third and 4th years. Is Pete Carol making our picks or Rex I love the Terminator Ryan making the picks? Once teams have completely exploited the new rookie pay scale for all it's worth owners will again decide to field the talent they need to win now. Seattle is doing it right now. Don't be shocked if Wilson is the gimp in next years playoffs. You want to see a good model for us to follow, the Colts. Get the no. 1 pick when you have a beast at QB available in the draft. The Colts have done this twice.
Funny you mention the Colts, because it bears on the Mevi$ situation. Falk, James, let go when the time was right for the club, and replaced in the draft.
I like what the Jets are doing. They're not going after overrated free agents and overpaying (did someone say Dolphins) and they are making good deals for the organization. They're not signing gimmick players or other teams' overrated discarded players. I also like that they are disciplined - no insider leaks to the press. Finally, I like how they are handling Revis. They won't make a (Revis) move until all the other free agent cornerbacks are signed (for MUCH less money) and the season starts and they'll see what he can do post-injury and some other teams will start feeling desperate for Revis' cornerback ability.
If you want to look at a team that's always in contention as a model the Colts are a team that you can't overlook. Didn't win the big game very often but they are always in the hunt. If we can get a 1 and 2 next year and suck enough to turn a couple of picks into a QB lottery I'm all in.
I absolutely LOVE what we're doing. I know 2013 is going to be a throw away season, so I'm ok with it. I will be able to give more insight once I see how Idzik is as a talent evaluator, but for right now, I'm excited about the direction the team is moving in. Not overpaying aging vets, getting into bidding wars, having these ridiculous backloaded contracts that kill us in later years. Already for 2014, we're looking at at least $40mil in cap space. So far, so good for Idzik
I love what we are doing this offseason. 1. We're not panicking, and giving out large contracts to guys that may or may not warrant it. Perfect example would be the Barnes situation, where we seemed to stick by our price and let him come back, after he left without signing a contract. In year's past, I think Tanny would've tried his "cap magic" to make sure he got his guy, but hurting us in the long term. I see Izdik thinking similar to how people should draft in an auction fantasy league. Set a price you are willing to pay, and if you can't have him for that, move on. 2. No leaks. Everything seems to be run tightly. Last year, there would've been screen shots of texts between our GM and every GM in the league regarding trades and concession stands on reddit everyday. 3. Patience. It's hard to be patient in a large media market. The media's job is to sensationalize the news, so more people tune in. So if a team is taking a downward turn, they have to sensationalize the downward turn. And it works in reverse as well. So to abstain from going after big names and trying to get creative with the cap, I like that we can try to find hidden gems and be patient. 4. Youth. We seem to be going for guys that are young, but were blocked by players on other teams. This gives them a chance to contribute this year, without actually being too old to not contribute when we do turn into a good team. Also, speed seems to be a focus, as we were a very slow team besides our CBs. As with everything new, there is always a sense of hope, because there is the element of unknown. It could turn out to be good or bad. As a Jets fan, atleast I have hope right now that our current front office does have a plan and the methods to follow those plans. Hopefully, it turns out true.
People keep saying "this year will be tough but next year will be better" Why?? Rex may get fired along with his whole new staff and we will bring a new HEad coach with an entirely new system to learn and he will want his own players and his own identity. So im not sure where this "next year should be better" bs keeps coming from. Our cap isnt gonna be much better next year either. And if we draft a QB we might have to watch him go threw growing pains ll over again. Im not as optimistic as the rest of you with the way things are going
So you fire your HC that endured the spike year for you? That's fucking brilliant. Hell, I have to wonder why Jerry Jones didn't fire Jimmy Johnson after 1-15 finish. It would be foolish to assume Ryan would be untouchable this year, but it is equally ludicrous to even automatically assume Ryan will be canned.
Im a big Rex Ryan fan and id love to see him back for atleast 3-4 more years, but with that said im not dumb enough to realize that Idzik will want his own coach if Rex tanks .Evey GM wants there own guy
Because of the injury factor, win now is always a bit of a crapshoot. Just do it right and hope you stay healthy.
The Jets have been normally active in free agency so far. Things look a bit unbalanced in terms of in and out because the roster had accumulated a lot of late prime players some of whom should have been let go in 2011 and 2012 and instead we did the whole thing at once in 2013. The only player that the Jets have let go that you might have expected them to re-sign was Keller and the reason they let him go was that he got hurt in a contract year headed into his second contract. His expectations were well above the value he had established.
I agree with the majority of posters here: I'm liking what we're doing. Even if we are terrible this year that isn't necessarily bad for the long term future. The important thing this year is we've gotten rid of or restructured some problem contracts and, maybe more importantly, haven't added any new potential problem contracts. Hopefully we get a good return for Revis and between this draft and next draft address a lot of our problem areas with youth and higher end talent and we'll see what happens from there. We might not be making much of a dip into the free agent pool next year either depending on how our draft picks this year and positioning next year turn out.
I don't know that the Jets will be big players in free agency at all moving forward other than to re-sign their own guys. What good organizations make a splash in free agency most years? None that I can think of offhand. Most good organizations treat free agency as a place to occasionally get a player they need to get over the top.
If you are making big splashes in free agency, you need to re-evaluate your team. It happens almost every time. Teams that build through free agency fail. We were one of them. This is exactly why I think the Dolphins are morons. Sign a bunch of big name free agents to one year contracts. Sounds very familiar to me. Watch 'em crash and burn. Idzik is a smart guy. He is putting cheap effective players into the lineup and waiting for the draft. He will pounce in the draft and scoop up talent where needed. Next year he will try and find the franchise QB we need and we will be on our way. Don't ever expect us to do what we did under Tanny now with Idzik running the show.
I think it is a bit to early to evaluate how we are doing. We got rid of some very good players and we have signed 5 cheap injury players. One starter and Colon and depth. But we still need to replace 2 safeties a guard and 1-2 OLBS and find a franchise QB. Losing Moore will be a hard player to replace. Our cap situation was never that bad. Certainly nowhere near as bad as the 2001 cap hell situation which took 5 years to get out of. We have a ton of cap room next year and Idzik has followed Tanny's plan for this year. That being said I like IDzik's style low key, pragmatic and quiet style. Hopefully he can find us our version of a Russel Wilson franchise style QB. Such a shame that we did not get rid of Sanchez last year when the FO was divided on whether to keep or get rid of Sanchez. We would likely then have drafted Russel Wilson.
I think Idzik is being smart but also think this was planned long before Idzik arrived. There is really no choice. Idzik grade- INC we have no idea I for one do not believe in throw away seasons every season needs to build on the other. There is not much difference between the worst team and the best team a couple of injuries here a hot player there and you are 11-5 or 3-13. That is the reality of the NFL. This is definitely a transition year out with the old in with the new. I am excited to see how the young guys step up on defense Cople, Wilks, Darius etc this will be a big year for those guys. Our corners are solid with or without Revis we need some safety's. On offense I think Hill will take a big step up and Holmes will once again be a playmaker. I think Mcknight and Goodson will thrive in MM offense. I want to see if Sanchez can take the step and become Sanchise. Although I think the Jets can be good there are a lot of depends and unknowns. I love Rex but this team even if they are losing needs to show growth each and every week. No more collapses down the stretch. We need a really good draft. I think we need to beef up the o-line and obviously OLB.
The only concern i have is that all our issues are still on the team. Instead of talking about winning a super bowl, now the sheep are talking about how many players we might get in the draft, lol. And completely ignoring the fact that tanny did a 10 times better job than the GM we have now has ever done for the Seahawks. He just got lucky in picking up wilson and having a good year last year. The last 4 years before that the Jets had a better team and record by far. Until they get serous and start cutting, they are just kidding themselves.
