Those are all fair points. I definitely agree with starting experience: it makes a world of difference at QB. Some will argue that his being 20 is a pro (more body development potential), yet that comes at a cost. For myself, let me make some arguments for him: 1) He is in the same mold as Josh Allen, and despite not having the arm Allen has, Darnold is MUCH more accurate. He does have a hitch in his throwing motion but it hasn't stopped him from being accurate. 2) Many given Allen the benefit of the doubt, because, Wyoming... but Darnold's film clearly shows the incompetence of his receivers since the group from the year before departed. Darnold's regression is tied directly to USC's regression (ironically, Oklahoma lost even more talent last year than USC but Mayfield improved anyway). You can see at times Darnold throwing to spots where his receiver just isn't there, and is looking bewildered. 3) Darnold is a winner. He has shown to be clutch in big moments, and that can't be underestimated. I read somewhere after the USC/UCLA game that it was typical of the 2 QBs: Rosen had the big day, but Darnold pulled out the win. 4) Darnold is conspicuously absent from the discussion of off the field concerns and from injury concerns. All of Darnold's problems are football related and very coachable. Those are my highlights. I will say this: before I became a Mayfield fan, I spent my time watching Darnold and Rosen almost exclusively. I got really sick of Darnold and to a lesser extent Rosen because of the turnovers. Darnold in particular will throw interceptions that have echoes of Mark Sanchez, and that has nothing to do with them coming from the same college. At least when Rosen turns it over, it's because he got stupid with playing aggressive. Darnold has a penchant for derp quality interceptions, and that's not even to talk about his fumble problem. He's at the top because everyone believes his problems are the easiest to fix and that his ceiling is worth the risk. That's what it comes down to.
My point is that it's dumb to summarily dismiss or ignore any aspect or factor. Measurables, game video, Combine numbers, Pro Days, Team workouts, Stats, Tests to try to determine football IQ, means of determining intangibles (heart, competitive fire/spirit, and leadership), and just spending time with the prospects are all important. All give information and clues that can be helpful in weeding out or deciding whom one wants. Production leads to stats. While they're not the same thing, they are intricately related. Yes, I know that Al Davis is in the HOF. He was an innovator, a great owner, and did a lot of great things, but he was also an asshole and a dirty SOB. At the end he was senile and focused solely on speed and he hurt the Raiders with that. I'm also painfully aware that the Jets have never had an owner as good as Davis. Perhaps the ownership team that brought Weeb and Namath to the Jets could have been if they had the financial wherewithal to have the longevity that Davis did. Hess and Johnson have been among the worst owners in the history of the NFL.
Dude im not gonna fucking argue.I never called you out in any instance..you called me sad & pathstic which is complete load of shit & rather than call you names back i simply drove home my thoughts on the original context of which You originally replied.Ive seen the logic im referring to pretty consistently since the trade up to 3. Its no person in paticular & it certainly wasnt directed at you.You have your panties all up in a bunch & i really dont understand why.
Guy, I didn't call you sad and pathetic. I called your post sad and pathetic. It's not your norm. You are one of my favorite posters here and I respect you a lot. I wasn't trying to put you down. Something in you, your attitude, approach has changed with this draft. I'm hoping that the normal Kurt returns following the draft. My panties aren't up in bunch. I'm not angry, frustrated, or anxious, and least of all at or with you. You are the one who is responding in that manner. That's what I'm trying to understand. You are normally calm, cool and collected and never take things personally, but recently, you have been more frustrated, tense and have taken things more personally. That's what I was trying to point out to you. I don't want to argue with you, either. Peace.
A 4th Rounder Named kaluka Maiava. Manginii was a very strange man. The weirdest story i read about him was a story that he said he ordered his coaching staff to give the playbook to colt McCoy one day after the other qbs and tha no coach was allowed to talk with McCoy all year even when he started due to injury.
I thought I had answered xxedge's question about why I dropped Darnold below Allen, but I guess I didn't. Anyway, what NC posted pretty much sums it up, and this closing sentence from him to me explains why so many have Darnold rated #1 - while he's not the best at most things, he doesn't have any real red flags. That said, it remains to be seen if he can fix his throwing motion, and his penchant for scrambling and trying to make plays on the fly, as well as learning how to take snaps under center. I go back and forth over who I rate higher, Allen or Darnold. Both will likely need at least a year, maybe two before starting, and I don't think the Jets can wait that long.
Just an FYI, the cons of Small hands for darnold and concussions for rosen, can also be applied to mayfield. mayfield has 9 1/2 inch hands, darnold 9 3/8. Myafield has also had a couple of concussions
The hands thing is def a concern. Comparing Rosen's concussions to Mayfields doesn't make much sense though. Mayfield missed 2 games the last 3 seasons combined. Rosen missed way more games and not just from concussions. Shoulder injury too.
wentz missed half his final season with injuries as well. It's not really something you can predict. Injuries happen
Yeah but none of them scream injury prone like say dee milliner who we all knew was injury prone and it carried right over.
Not sure if anyone posted this, but Ryan Leaf has an opinion: that Mayfield is the next Ryan Leaf. It's from a few days ago. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...eld-sounds-1998-version-rya-article-1.3931979 Take if for what it's worth, I guess.
