Allen Vs Mayfield at the 3 pick - what the film shows

Discussion in 'Draft' started by GasedAndConfused, Mar 26, 2018.

?

If Rosen and Darnold are gone, who would you pick with the 3rd pick?

  1. Mayfield

    63.2%
  2. Allen

    36.8%

Thanks for posting. Every time they analyze something that Allen is perceived to be the best at, the results come back favoring Baker. This reminds me of when people kept saying Allen makes more NFL throws... metrics proved otherwise there too.

My head still says Rosen but my heart wants Mayfield.

I don't think it's a fair comparison, comparing Mayfield to Allen. Allen without his arm strength likely does not even get drafted. Allen really has no business being in the conversation. He is eye candy. He looks pretty in a dress and appears to be a good kid but he lacks substance and a body of work. It would be more fair to compare Mayfield to one of the other 2 top 3 QBs in the draft.

    im in the same boat.

Rosen seems the safer pick, but Mayfield seems to have the IT factor. Both could be good, both could be busts. It is what it is, I'll get behind whoever they draft and hope they succeed and that well be set up for the next 10+ years at QB (fingers crossed)

Yeah I'm the same way. I've always preferred a QB who's a bit of a riverboat gambler...has to have some attitude and exude confidence.

For what it's worth Matt Waldman has Rosen #1`and mayfield as the #4 overall QB's. (Jackson is 2, Darnold is 3). He studies miles of game tape on every player and has been doing his analysis for a couple of decades. Pretty conservative in his analysis usually but he said Rosen is one of if not the most technically proficient QB's he's every graded. Compares him to Matt Ryan.

    I'll be ok with either.

Darnold has the true IT factor IMO. He raises his game to another level when the game is on the line.

I think it's ridiculous to compare metrics between quarterbacks who run completely different offenses; the reads, progressions, routes, protections, footwork, ball handling, timing, you name it can all be worlds apart. Not to mention disparities between supporting casts. People are acting like we are about to present the Heisman trophy in a couple weeks. This is the NFL f*cking draft; in the hierarchy of tools that GMs should use to make their selection, talent should hold the most weight.

After Hackenberg I believe Mac is not going the project route...It will be Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield.

  10. “Let’s not take the Physically superior QB,we suck at developing QBs.Instead let’s take a 6”1 QB w small hands who comes from a spread system & is used to 80% of his completed passes coming via wide open targets”

Keep your stats and your film, here's the person who knows where Mayfield is going:

Skip ahead to 3:10 if you want the answer!

Mayfield is so much cooler than the rest of them. I watched the film. I know this.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring

Anchoring or focalism is a cognitive bias that describes the common human tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered (the "anchor") when making decisions. During decision making, anchoring occurs when individuals use an initial piece of information to make subsequent judgments. Once an anchor is set, other judgments are made by adjusting away from that anchor, and there is a bias toward interpreting other information around the anchor. For example, the initial price offered for a used car sets the standard for the rest of the negotiations, so that prices lower than the initial price seem more reasonable even if they are still higher than what the car is really worth.

We already have a physically superior qb in Hackenberg.

  16. I’ve already stated I’m fine w taking Mayfield over Allen not the route I would go but these 4 are all about flavor.

But this idea that Allen is a 3 year project & Mayfield is a year tops is backwards based off everything I’ve seen. That’s not to say I think Mayfield needs 3 years. I think the whole “project” aspect is overblown & a wash. They both need a year & everything is set up for them to get a year.

Even so mayfield has more things to work on developmentally than Allen does.So folks anointing Baker & discarding Allen with that sort of logic doesn't make a lot of sense.Thats all..

  17. If that’s who you compare Allen to than I feel that much better about completely contradicting your opinion about Allen Vs Mayfield.

It’s even more ridiculous to ignore metrics completely because they don’t agree with a small sample size/selective memory.

Talent holding the most weight is what got us Gholston, Coples, Milliner...

Only point is that physically superior doesn’t mean much. At the end of the day you have to be able to do something that Allen has yet to prove.

Every QB in this draft will have different development requirements depending on where they land. The right fit is more important than the player's talent. If the player goes to a team that suits their talents, they will be more likely to succeed. If they go to a team that does not suit their talents, they are more likely to fail. This is true of every prospect, and is frequently an underappreciated reason why certain players fail or succeed.

If you take the Jets, and understand that Bates has a background that is both west coast offense and heavily predicated on play action, that is why I believe Mayfield to be the right for the Jets. When it comes to precision passing and operating outside of the pocket, no one in this class does it better than Mayfield. If we were the Giants who have a more vertically oriented passing attack, then someone like Josh Allen makes more sense to me. In this case, Allen's development time goes down, Mayfield's goes up.
