The difference between Mayfield and Allen is that every bro bowl QB besides Wilson and Brees are over 6’2” in height. QBs shorter than that simply don’t make it because they can’t see the middle of the field. It’s not a conspiracy it’s a fact. You combine that with a spread system and you have a prospect that has a second round grade. His hype has boosted his stock through the roof and will probably get him drafted in the top 10 but realistically the chance he becomes a FQB is slim to none and because of where he is drafted he will get plenty of opportunities to prove me and most of the nfl wrong
I disagree. 6 foot or 6-3 there he would still be a guy with very little difficult NFL caliber throws on tape, suspect ball placement, throws late, has erratic footwork, inconsistent with the deep ball...etc. I didn't even mention the possible off the field concerns. Lastly, he is short that's just who he is as a prospect. It's in part why so many love him so much. In the NFL height is a skill. Saying he would be the top pick if he was 6-3 is like saying Rosen would be the top pick if he was athletic or not a douche, Allen if he was more accurate, Darnold if he didn't turn the ball over so much.
There is a good chance if he was 6’3” he would be the first pick but he wouldn’t be a sure thing still. I don’t think people understand the magnitude of coming from a pro style offence and a spread system. Spread QBs don’t work through progressions nor take snaps from under center because it’s all designed hot routes. At 6’3” at least a team in the top 3 could justify the pick but like I said it still wouldn’t be a sure thing.
Manziel has a very good arm. He throws a great deep ball and can make every NFL throw. Manziel also shredded a College team loaded with NFL draft picks. The big knocks on Manziel was his height, off field issues and the fact that he took off and ran when there where throws to be made.
I'm curious ito know where Mayfield fans rank him among other Spread QBs drafted recently. Is he better than Goff, Mahomes, Carr, Mariota...etc.? I personally would take all those listed ahead of him.
Kurt, I can't believe that you are obsessing over that point. It's really silly and a non-issue imo. Oklahoma supposedly had a great OL, but if you watch much game film or cut-ups of Mayfield, you see that he is frequently under pressure and having to evade a rusher or (several). The Jets' OL probably isn't even as good as Oklahoma's was. Mayfield's ability to move in the pocket to evade the rush (what you call "drifting in the pocket to find passing lanes") is a plus, rather than a minus. If Mayfield isn't pressured, then he won't have to move nearly as much in the pocket. Even if he does has to move in the pocket to find passing lanes, so what? Brees does it. Wilson does it. Pocket discipline? meh It's funny I've never heard one other analyst, "expert" or poster talk about "pocket discipline" with regards to any QB.
Manziel failed because he excelled at hero ball/playground football, which you can’t do in the nfl. Even if he was 6’3”, he would have failed. I never thought Manziel had a very good arm. He throws a nice spiral but had an average arm at best. Go watch his pro day, the ball starts wobbling whenever he throws 20+ yards... then watch mayfield’s proday / combine. It’s a real disservice to compare them from a throwing perspective. Chad Pennington said Baker is the best pure thrower in this class...
I would rank him second after Mahomes. If you remember, I LOVED Mariota and coveted him for the Jets, but he ran a lot more than Mayfield. Mayfield is more a pure passer and keeps his eyes downfield. Even though I loved Mahomes last season in the draft, the only reason I give Mahomes the edge is that he's taller/bigger and has a stronger arm and can throw with amazing accuracy from all kinds of crazy arm angles. In terms of leadership and competitive fire, and maybe even Football IQ, I'd give the edge to Mayfield. I never liked Goff, and never studied Carr.
They were drafted how long ago? They were drafted during a time that a real bias had begun against shorter QBs. The NFL had forgotten that Fran Tarkenton (6'0"), Y.A. Tittle (6'0"), and Bart Starr (6'1") had success in the NFL at QB at their height earlier.
wasn't a huge fan of Mariota, and still not really ... but I would take all of those QBs over Mayfield. Was a huge fan of Carr at the draft. I liked Goff as well, I thought he had the perfect mechanics. Mac wanted Goff too. 1 - Carr 2 - Goff 3 - Mariota 4 - Mahomes 5 - Mayfield
He’s not better than either of the 4 just more hype because he has a firey personality I do like how competitive he is and that does hold weight but when it comes to size, skill and football IQ I’m not sold.

Well then think it’s silly.When defenses bottle up the tackle box & he can’t see over the dirty windshield leaving us vertically challenged like always..you won’t find it silly.It's not about "avoiding the rush"...this isn't necesarily a blitz. It's Bottling him up w. a 5 man "Even front". THe 9 techniques contain the tackle box, the down linemen keep their lane integrity..they push the pocket, get their hand up & force the QB to drop straight back & try to throw over the dirty windshield. Meanwhile the backers sit in short zones, read the QB's eyes & dare him to beat them over the top. Rex used it alot against QBs who like to drift in the pocket or leave the pocket all together..Bowles has used it as well. As for never heard an “expert”..check out what Bucky Brooks said about Mayfield on this very topic.Dont think you’ll like what he has to say..or maybe he’s just “sillly” too Edit: Unfortunately I can't find the segment. It was w. Daniel Jeremiah & they both voiced concerns over him "Drifting in the pocket" & not showing "Pocket discipline". Additionally Bucky called Oklahoma's offensive route tree "High school level". He wants to see Mayfield consistently drop back w. discipline..not shuffing laterally to find a proper window & fire the ball downfield. You can poopoo it all you want. But we're talking about potentially the very recipe Defensive coordinators will use to neutralize Mayfield before he even gets into the NFL. It's totally legit to have concerns.
