Not even a Tom Brady or Manning could have won more than 8 games with that Jets offense in 2007, no chance, no chance @ all. Chad Pennington was the QB in 2007 that was getting all of the practice reps during the offseason with the starters, Pennington was the one who was gaining the much needed chemestry with the 1st string players during preseason games and Pennington was the QB who started the year as the Jets starting QB...Not Kellen Clemens. Kellen was really THROWN INTO THE FIRE and what was he? A 2nd year QB? He was a rookie in my eyes because this was his first time getting the chance as the starting QB and it was an unfair chance in my eyes, and in the eyes of many...It wasnt even a "Chance", he had "No chance in hell" The Jets season was just about over when KC became the starting QB and lets not forget that we had NO RUN GAME and NO O-Line what so ever. Just look @ the freaking O-Line...Mangold and Ferguson were both really young, only their 2nd years in the NFL... We had NO left guard @ all...What was that guys name? Will Montgomery or something like that? Where is he now? Exactly. Who was our starting RT? You know, the guy who protects the QB.. Who was it again? Anthony freaking Clement? Are you fucking kidding me? Clement was prolly the WORST NFL Starting RT to EVER play the damn game and it was a damn shame that he was starting for the Jets. We had two guys on the O-Line in Clement and Montgomery who were "trying" to play the role as starters when they were really 3rd string players. They should have never made it off the practice squad in my eyes. J.Mac was the slot WR and Coles was really banged up that year. Thomas Jones and Leon Washington couldnt get 60 yards on the ground because of our O-Line...How the hell was Kellen supposed to win games with NO RUN GAME and No O-Line what so ever? Pennington couldnt get it done with the situation, Brady or Manning would have struggles and it would be unfair to say that Kellen got a fair chance in 2007. Lets give Kellen an O-Line with players such as Mangold and Ferguson (Both 4th year starters), a HOF LG in Faneca with a proven Veteran @ RT in Woody with Moore as our RG...Lets give the kid a full offseason with an O-Line and running game and then lets judge the man. I would love to have Cutler as the Jets starting QB...But to say something like, "Clemens lost any chance of ever being the Jet's answer to QB with how he played in 2007." Thats BS in my eyes.
How can you compare the 2 when Cutler has been a 4 year stater and a pro bowler, while Clemens has only started 8 games in his 4 year career? To me what is a telling sign is that Clemens has a year left on his contract without even a hint of a new one while Ratliff was just resigned a few months back. Hmmmm, what does that tell you of the confidence the organization has in Clemens? If we don't get Cutler the "open competition" is Ratliff's to lose.
Ainge will be there, maybe a rookie too. The Cutler thing has a lot more to do with Denver than it does the Jets. Any GM without a sure thing at QB would have to be interested in acquiring Cutler if he actually becomes available. Of course they wanted Favre back - the team looked like a superbowl contender after week 12 when he was still healthy. Why wouldn't they want him back with another year in the system and a full offseason? I understand you absolutely hate Clemens but there's still a chance he works out behind a real o-line. You can sit here and declare whatever you want, but no one knows for sure, no matter how much you think you know.
I know all of that and it doesn't matter. They don't want him as their long term QB. If they did then. 1 - they wouldn't have had a QB competition last year 2 - they wouldn't have traded for Favre and pay him 13 million bucks with 2 weeks to go before the season opened and after that competition was over 3 - they wouldn't have wanted Favre back this year 4 - they wouldn;t be jumping head first into the Cutler thing. Really, seriously, it is about as obvious as it can get. Cutler will be a 4th year QB this year and he can't buy the starting job.
Allow me, since I largely agree with him. 2007: no run game, porous O-line, playbook built for Chad, old coaching staff, thrown into fire. 2009: Complete unknown in either direction, new coaching staff, new offense, new approach. Could very well succeed, but Cutler at right price would be amazing.
I will keep it for a while if he doesn't. I'm actually not convinced he'll win it, but I think he's easily the favorite to win it and will be amused at your reaction if he does.
At this exact point in time he probably is the favorite but then again I don't think this is the set of QBs we open camp with and if we trade for another QB that guy will be the automatic starter no matter who it is. If we draft one it will be a competition.
1 - Mangini is gone 2 - PSLs 3 - Posturing 4 - New coaching staff One coach's trash is another's treasure. Nobody is arguing that Clemens is a surefire HOFer, simply that he's an unknown quantity who can't be fully judged on 2007. Mangini was STILL trying to force a Chad-oriented playbook on Clemens last season. Look at how much Favre struggled early on before they took the reins off a bit. With a full offseason, a new playbook, and better talent around him, Clemens very well could succeed this year. However, how stupid would a new coaching staff be if they didn't make an attempt to snag a surefire franchise QB in an uncertain situation? That proves nothing about his potential, only the lack of evidence we have.
1- Just about every team has QB Comp's during the offseason, it's called getting your starting QB ready for the regualr season. 2- Favre is a HOF QB and the Jets front office was looking to make a run and make a run @ a QB who was only 1 game away from the SB the year before. It doesnt matter what young QB you have on the roster with talent and potential...If you can bring in a guy like Farve, and have a QB like Kellen learn behind a HOF QB...You do it. 3- Why wouldnt we want Favre back this year with a better overall Defense and a chance to gain chemesty with the Jets with a FULL offseason and preseason to work with. It's common sense. 4- It's DENVER that has Cutler on the trade block and the Jets (As well as many other teams such as TB) are just looking into their options. I would love Cutler as the Jets QB but I would also love to see KC have a 2nd chance with a sick running game behind a solid O-Line with Rex Ryan running the defensive show.
All of your answers just solidify my point that they don't want Clemens as their starter. If they did they wouldn't be lining up to throw away draft picks and spend millions and millions of dollars. They already have Clemens on the cheap.
If you honestly feel that KC had a fair chance in 2007... After being thrown into the fire on a team who had just about no chance of still making the playoffs with a team that had no run game because of major O-Line problems well then...It's clear to me why you were voted as TheGanggreens "Least Knowledgeable poster" I'm not trying to attack you or anything like that...But it's just insane if you think Kellen had a fair chance. Did you even see that team of 2007? If you did, lol, you would know it was not all Kellens fault, far from it.
If Kellen Clemens is going to be "disillusioned" enough to cause a problem because the Jets are looking at getting a Pro Bowler at his position, then forget him. Cut him. He's not good enough to be a headache. If T.O. bitches and moans, you work around him. If Kellen Clemens does it, you start Brett Ratliff.
It doesn't matter how I feel. The only thing that matters is how the Jets feel. I'm not making a case for or against Clemens in this thread. All I am saying is that it it patently obvious that the Jets do not want him as their QB and have done everything they can over the last two years to make sure that doesn't happen.
