when I watch TV up on the actual TV, I often take up workout stuff. The problem is lately, I've been watching in front of my computer, and there isn't much space here.
Interesting study of HFCS vs. table sugar. Done at Princeton. http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S26/91/22K07/
Good article & study, worth reading And while you're bumping, my weight loss program is moving along pretty well. I'm down to 200lbs from 237lbs after about 70 days. As soon as I'm comfortably in the 190-195 range, I'm going to kill the weight loss program and start the strength training program. Thanks to whoever it was that mentioned 5x5 workouts, after scouring the web I found the Strong Lifts 5x5 program which is what I'm going to try. Anyone else ever do SL?
Thanks. In regards to HFCS, I think the jury is still out. It may very well be much worse than plain sugar but I'm not convinced just yet. I'm sure this will be sorted out within the next couple years. What usually happens though is that there's a lot of public backlash, justified or not, and the food industry voluntarily changes their ways to appease the masses. Here's a blog that critiques the Princeton study: http://www.thebigmoney.com/blogs/da...latest-hfcs-study-draws-predictable-reactions Have to agree about researchers using superlatives, people running tests should be 100% objective. And they really should have done a long term study of sucrose vs hfcs instead of plain rat food vs hfcs
Thanks for the HFCS study Alio. The study seems to come to the conclusion that HFCS is more obesity promoting because "excess fructose is being metabolized to produce fat, while glucose is largely being processed for energy or stored as a carbohydrate, called glycogen, in the liver and muscles" This theory has actually been studied in humans and it was found that excess fructose caused fatty deposits to accumulate in the liver and an elevated level of triglycerides. The tests used absolutely retarded levels of fructose though, like 600 grams or so daily - something I doubt even the worst soda drinkers could accomplish. They also mention the ratios of fructose/glucose in both HFCS and sucrose and this is something I think is pretty important. We're not talking about a huge difference in the two - Sucrose is 50-50 and HFCS is 55-45. So say you drink a Gatorade with 20g sucrose then you would be getting 10g fructose and 10g glucose, and if that same Gatorade is sweetened with HFCS then you're talking 9g glucose and 11g fructose. So we're not talking huge swings in numbers and I doubt your liver will notice the difference. Maybe if you're drinking 10 Gatorades a day then maybe the excess fructose will have an adverse impact, but the reality is that if you're drinking 10 Gatorades a day then you have more to worry about than fructose. This is why I'm not in love with the fructose study to begin with. Also, going back to glycogen, unless you're dieting and working-out not much of the carbs you eat are going to go be converted to muscle or liver glycogen like they mention - they are either going to be used for fuel or eventually stored as fat. Here's what I think: If you take in a small amount of fructose you have nothing to worry about. If you're taking in huge amounts of fructose then you're going to be an unhealthy fatass with high triglycerides and it won't make any difference whether you're getting it from sucrose or HFCS. Either way, I hope we can get a study done on humans sometime soon. Rats are cheap and easy to control but their physiology is very different from ours.
I walked most of Bull Island, but the actual time I had was more like 5 hours than 8. I was wearing new shoes that apparently don't fit quite as well as I thought. So now, I have nasty black blood blisters on the back of my heels, hurts like a son of a bitch. Lucky I have another pair of hiking shoes that I know fit me. I've still got a few miles of Charleston streets to walk tomorrow, and a tour via ferry of Fort Sumter Island. I suppose the blisters are bound to pop along the way. Yuck.
Wear the new hiking shoes in the shower. My dad taught me that trick. I do a lot of hiking, he did as well. Do this with all new hiking boots. A couple times in the shower and once dried, you're on your way to blister free conquesting. Just my dad's .02.
Sorry but I didn't really feel like reading through 38 pages .... Alio when you were losing your weight which equipment did you use at the gym? I've started by using the eliptical (sp) and riding the stationary bike but I'm not really sure how long I should be going for. I've noticed that the eliptical kills the calories but I'm not sure how long I should do it for or how many times a week. What type of program did you use?
I've been to a gym exactly one time in my entire life. And that was before Derek Jeter was a professional ballplayer. Anyway, I use a Gazelle at home now. I used the stationary bike in my early days. I did ~10-15 miles on the bike IIRC. Now I just do the Gazelle (a non-mechanical eliptical) for like 15-20 minutes. I just try to do a variable run on it. Sometimes just an average pace, sometimes, as hardcore as I can, and sometimes slowed down. Most of my exercise comes from weights though.
Only in Canada can a fat, hairy, loud grunting underachiever like Sharpe be a cult hero.... BTW can't believe how many people recognize him, even junc was like... Is that Iron Mike Sharpe?
