I would imagine the transition from Herm's training camp to the Mangini camp might be a bit much for the players. If Barlow already needed a day off after flying in from Frisco, fine. However, come game 8 or so, I really don't wanna hear about Barlow being "tired" or needing a "day off".

He gets his pass now. I hope he's really well rested because if he's not the RB we need him to be, we've wasted time, a DP and money on this adventure. Barlow had better show us what he has instead of film clips of days gone by in Frisco.

I guess Mangini can give the regulars more days off as well.. Oops, that's something Herm would do but the difference being, Mangini will get credited whereas Herm got fried.. I'm not a Herm guy by any means either but you already know that...

No doubt Fen. I liked the new CS as well and I champion patience as much as anyone on this board. I just hope our "faith" will be rewarded within a reasonable timeframe. I do wonder if Mangini really knows how to handle the media instead of stonewalling and running from it.

I'm seeing things I don't like besides the subtefuge. This need for a RB without seeing what's already on the roster during real game situations is a biggie for me. Makes you wonder how Mangini would deal with a full blown crisis like another Pennington injury. Would we trade our first round pick next season for a #2 like Staub?

I thought this CS had patience at one time. It does seem like right now, they're in a "now" mode instead of a rebuilding mode..

I just honestly feel that there isn't any reading between the lines to be done here, and I am aware that there is A LOT of reading between the lines to be done with Mangini.

Only issue with Herm giving players days off is he was already running a marshmallow camp so it seemed asinine. Mangini's actually working his players, and he doesn't give any of them a break. That's why I buy his story on Barlow. He's been accused of a lot of things since getting here, being soft isn't one of them.

Actually, the RB situation makes me think higher of this CS. Martin is, sadly, likely done, at least for 2006. With him out of the mix, we lack a complete RB on our roster.

Houston - very Martin like in his speed, stature, and running style, but not as good a receiver and not a very good blocker.

Blaylock - honestly, he's a third down back. he's a nice player, but not a guy that can shoulder a 25+ carry load.

    Washington - a complete ?

So the CS went out and got Barlow, a guy that had fallen off everyone's radar in the San Fran abyss. He's fast enough, with good vision, good hands, and can pick up the blitz. This CS wants to win games THIS year, and they went out and got a back that they thought could carry the load. I applaud them for their efforts.

I disagree here. I think the Jets had enough at RB to go into this season. We really need to find out what we had on the roster. Askew? Houston? Blaylock?Washington?. All of them need real game (regular season) experience. Washington out of the bunch should stick. I don't see why the panic moves for a RB? Win games this year? Sure sells to the season ticket holders but in the long run, why go into draft day '07 drafting BPA's instead of impact guys we really need? How will we ever know exactly WHAT we need if we don't really know how our players react during real games during the regular season? Most of the rebuilt teams took several losing seasons to assess their rosters. It wouldn't have hurt the Jets to take the time to do the same during a regular season..

Mr. Rock should report more of the interview to clear things up. Here's what he left out!

Jets | Barlow might play Friday
    Tue, 22 Aug 2006 16:35:37 -0700

During his press conference, New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini was asked about RB Kevan Barlow's availability for the preseason game Friday, Aug. 25. Mangini said, "I am not sure yet. I am going to see how quickly he picks up some things. Maybe it is on a limited basis. I want to be smart with this because you want to make sure the guy really understands what he has to do, not only for his own safety but on the blitz pick-up the last thing you want is confusion. We will see how that goes and gauge it at the end of the week."

I just don't see any hidden agendas by the CS! All we need is for Barlow to miss a blitz pick up and get Chad hurt again!

I'm kinda with CMan, at least as far as the "Barlow should practice" bit, but for different reasons. Personally, I feel that with problem players or problem people in general, you want to work them into the ground. Give them as much as they can possibly handle so they have no time to act up. When they're acting up, all they are really asking for is your attention, so give them your attention.

lol your already admitting you know the purpose for mangini's choice of words. do i think his covert ops manilla statements are a little overboard? of course, I'm with you all the way. but this is just the kind of stuff we need to expect from him, I imagine once he gets some wins under his belt he might lighten up to the point where he seems to be human. (which would be good for belli and him) haha

i understand your sentiment too, but this is just the way its gonna be for now.

Sorry Cman, but I disagree. Blaylock has seen the field enough in his career for us to know he's not an every down back. Houston's lack of breakaway speed, average hands, and poor blitz pickup have been obvious. Askew is a fullback. Washington may have something, but is tiny and 2nd day pick. Martin is not playing this year, so going into the season without a true starter at RB would have been irresponsible.

look at it this way. He's probably only 78.4% rested, because he missed the bus and had to take a red eye. The good thing is that he tried to be on the bus, similar to a dog chasing the bus.

I dont know man, i think going from coast to coast, passing a physical, hitting practice and hitting the new york media is enough to earn a days rest......i mean come on, football players are people too, not machines

As always, it all comes down to wins and production. Get W's and everyone is your friend. L's are a ticket into the Abyss.

As far as letting Barlow rest a day; uderstandable. The time change going to earlier is tough on the body. I am not critical of this.

I think Barlow will see limited action on Friday. At most, a quarter of play, tops.
