I hope you guys aren't falling for this Sanchez is doing good in camp crap, because this was the same excuse they used to start him for the last four years. Doing good in a 7 on 7, with no pads, and no pass rush to boot? Yeah, it says we should start him, alright. Please.
What I'm saying is that if he looks like Blaine Gabbert out there we are not financially tied to him like that so we can cut ties and draft a QB in '14. The only way he would stick around despite sucking is if there is a ton of money tied up in him ala Sanchez. Playing well in practice counts for something but it doesn't tell the whole story. If playing well in practice meant that it could translate to actual live game action then Sanchez is headed for the hall of fame. We need to get him out there on the field and evaluate him then so we can know how to approach the draft next year. Geno doesn't have the luxury of the wait and see game like others like Sanchez, Gabbert, Ponder etc. It's either produce or he'll be replaced very quickly. If he proves to be unready this year and Sanchez has to start then he'll be back next season but he'll be competing with whoever we draft at the position in '14.
Actually, I disagree. I think if Geno shows the physical skills with a reasonable ability to pick up the offense but it's decided he should sit for a year we do not necessarily pick up a QB in 14'. Marty knows a thing or two about QB's so I'll wait for his judgement. We have enough holes on this team that if we don't have to get a QB next year then we use any 1st round pick on skill needs.
so what if he has to compete with a first round pick next year. the name of the game is to get your franchise qb. if you are not sure if you have one than you probably dont. if you dont have one you draft one every chance you get till you do. worst case scenario is you end up with too many good qbs. whether geno plays or doesnt play, if we have an oppurtunity to take a qb in 2014 that could be a franchise qb we take him because if we are drafting that high we probably need him.
That Shefter guy what a hack he is who would listen to him. There is nothing shocking happening here. Mark is a fifth year pro finally with a competent OC. Geno is a rookie coming from a non pro style offense trying to pick up a tough WCO. From all accounts Geno has a great arm and has a good chance to be a good QB. But being a second round pick does not mean we can draft a first round QB next season what it means he does not need to start right away and he will have a chance to develop. First mini camp Jets QB situation looking pretty good.
If we are drafting that high we will have more issues than QB on this team. Wasting a 2nd round would not be a good start for IDZIK. Take a look around the league all these so called Franchise Qbs not a single one is doing anything without stacked team. If the Jets had a 1600 yd rusher do you think they would have made the playoffs?
Let the kid develop http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/06/geno_smith_not_ready_right_awa.html In explaining why Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith have been unable to separate from each other in the Jets' quarterback competition, quarterbacks coach David Lee noted that Smith has had some difficulty adjusting to the West Coast system. There are many difficulties between what he's being asked to do now and what he did at West Virginia. "His system at West Virginia, there’s no similarities there whatsoever," Lee said Wednesday. Today, Rex Ryan backed up Lee in saying that Smith is not quite ready to play but also expounded on the long view. "If we had to play tomorrow I'd agree with that," Ryan said. "But I think when we get out to training camp and we have that time we'll see if he's ready or not ready. We'll make that decision. Are there things he's working every day at? Absolutely. He came from a system that this is not a surprise. He came from a system that's primarily was in a shotgun system. "His steps -- dropbacks -- his mechanics footwork wise weren't dialed in the way they'll have to be at this level. I think some of that is your five and seven step drops, it's all new to him. But sometimes you can't even notice it. Because when he's on, the guy is absolutely terrific. We knew that it's not an easy process but it's one that I have confidence that when we get to Cortland, I think when the thing goes I think you're going to see the guy keep improving and improving and improving." In trying to turn down comparisons to successful rookies like Russell Wilson, Lee mentioned that Smith did not have the benefit of playing in offensive systems that were similar in college and the NFL. "Geno hasn’t had that luxury," Lee said. "It’s been a brand-new world ever day, just struggling with the basic things."
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/06/jets_qb_coach_david_lee_mark_s.html Interesting, Sanchez looks so good he hasn't separated from Smith in the competition. There's reason to be optimistic that Sanchez won't start. There's reason to be pessimistic that Geno will suck just as much.
That is obvious but there is much more to the position than being able to throw a football. why? then we'd have our franchise QB and have excellent trade bait in Smith. That's the best possible outcome in this situation.
Of course, but having elite arm talent is a pretty nice thing to lean on. Just watching Russell Wilson last year throwing darts all over the field really made me envious. _
In that scenario they would either draft or bring in a vet QB to compete with Geno. But then again if he shows that he can pick up the offense and has the physical skills then I don't see why he should sit. Maybe that's just me. He has to really suck for him to sit a year imo. If Geno proves to be good then we use that pick to draft players to help Geno. We don't draft another QB. That's bad business. Therefore we need to see what we have in Geno and decide whether we go QB if one is available or we draft a WR or TE. If he has to sit a year then I agree that we need to draft a QB, because imo it shouldn't be that hard to beat out Sanchez for the starting job.
I feel that Sanchez winning the competition is in the best interest of the Jets. We all want Mark to finally take that big step out of the QB basement. At this point in his career he should be expected to beat out a 2nd round rookie, but I'm more anxious to see him do more than that. We heard great reports about Sanchez in camp last year, so I'm not expecting anything, but I'd love to see him turn it around.
You want so desperately for Sanchez to succeed, that your basic reasoning skills have been overwhelmed with lust.
I want to win, I don't care who the QB is unlike you guys who would rather lose w/ another QB than win w/ Mark but the best thing for this franchise would be for mark to win the job and have a Brees like 2004 watching his career take off. I know you guys would hate to see that and instead prefer a guy who may or may not be good who you will boo out of town in 2 years and welcome the next flavor of the month.
The superfan has spoken. The superfan knows all. I don't mind if Mark starts and has a good year. That would make HIM perfect trade bait. THEN, we can have a young and hungry Geno Smith take over and run the franchise. Stop obsessing over Mark, you act like your daughter is dating him or something.
How unaware some folks are, you are obsessing over mark in a worse way. Your way is a sad, pathetic way. I am rooting for a guy that has helped our team, you are rooting against a guy that has helped our team. Yes, I am a superfan It sure beats being a stupid fan.
As sure as day turns to night when the pads go on and the red practice jersey comes off Sanchez will fold when live action unfolds. We've seen this movie 4 times already. The 5th edition is just starting to unfold.
