We are going to have to add someone this year at OLB to improve the position. If A Thomas comes in for backup money, I won't tear my hair out. Gholston won't even be considered an OLB by week 3.

    Pats waiting on Thomas trade?

Just got this off ESPN Insider..........

It's being widely assumed that Adalius Thomas will not be with the New England Patriots for the start of the 2010 season. Previous rumors had linked him with the Seattle Seahawks, but the prevailing thought for the past few weeks was that the New York Jets -- and his old coach, Rex Ryan -- might make the most sense.

Ryan can't publicly comment on Thomas thanks to the league's occasionally-enforced tampering rules, but Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reported on an email the paper received from Thomas on Monday night. In it, Thomas denied that he ever told Bart Scott he wanted to play for Ryan and the Jets (cue Elton John), indicated that he wasn't at the team's voluntary workout session because he didn't know it started on Monday and that he's "a Patriot until otherwise noted from Bill (Belichick) or the organization." That last part might change quickly based on the second part.

While an outright cut is possible, so is a trade, and that'd be the better option for the Pats. Here's ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss on the timing of that situation:

    Mike Reiss
Won't happen until near the draft

"I think the Patriots will try to trade Thomas and that could mean they hold on to him until the draft, when trades are prevalent. If that doesn't happen, then I think he gets released. I don't see Thomas back with the Patriots next year

I think the story is the same.. The Cheater Bill will hang on to Thomas for as long as possible and then release him around training camp hoping he doesnt run right to the Jets.

Are we even certain the Pats are going to release him ?

I mean they KNOW hed be going to the Jets and I wouldnt be surprised if they held onto him just to keep em from them

Why would we want Adalius Thomas?

He'll be 33 when the season starts. He's averaged 5 sacks a season the last three years, trending downward in each of them, and he's missed 9 games over the last two seasons.

Can we please avoid the Mets strategy of acquiring guys who were good in 2006?

Well he's due a bunch of money I believe, plus he was one of the main culprits last year when Belichek sent players home from practice, and then he openly criticized Belichek afterwards and was benched. So I mean all those things added up most likely mean he will be released.

I agree for the most part that I'd like to avoid becoming the crappy Mets (who make me wish the NFL season started sooner than it does), but the thing with Thomas is his best success came in Rex's system, which is quite different than what he runs in New England. There's a decent chance Rex would be able to get him back in the best position to succeed and get something out of him.

AD was such an amazingly versatile defender when he played under Rex. I have no idea how much he has left or to what extent he has lost any of his previously freakish levels of speed, quickness, agility and strength. Other than Al Davis, I can't imagine anyone trading for him based on his exorbitant contract which leaves only two remaining options: He gets cut or the Pats keep him, the latter of which appears unlikely.

AD effectively played up to seven positions on D per game while with the Ravens (corner, strong safety, middle, strong and weak side LB, DE and tackle).

I have no idea how much he is to blame for his fall from grace in New England. He hasn't come out and fully blasted the franchise outright but his claims suggest extremely poor communication between him and BB.

If he could be 80% (or more) of what he was in 2006, I would sure as hell love to have him here for a year or two.

i look at it like this:

he loves rex and loves rex's system, which gave him his most success.

hes going to be asked to essentially do one thing, which is rush the passer like a sonofabitch. something that older players are generally able to do for longer than say, being a guy who has to react and take more punishing contact from rb's up the middle or playing in the trenches.

he cant be too off because he didnt really play much last year, mainly due to belicheat not liking him.

there isnt a huge market for the guy, so hes not going to command a ton of money.

put this all together and i reall cant see how this can be a bad move in any way. its not like, other than pace, we have anyone better than him, so why not take a shot

oh and i would obviously rather see him than scissor me timbers zerxes out there
