Aaron Glenn retires as a Texan

Discussion in 'New York Jets' started by Footballgod214, Jul 27, 2010.

  1. Glenn was not a dominant player nor is he a hall of famer, but he was a pro bowl calibur man to man type corner.Any given year in his prime he was top 5,arguably top 3 at his position league wide. I'll take him over Hasty,Smith,Jackson,Semple,Abraham or any of the other decent CB's this franchise has had over the years.

The reality is, in NFL history there haven't BEEN that many truly dominant corners historically. Blount,Haynes,Green,Sanders and Woodson...that's about it.Glenn falls in w/ alot of other guys who were good but not great including Aeneus Williams,Kevin Smith, and Patrick Surtain.

..By the way, if Revis stays healthy, sticks w/ playing in New York and stays hungry, his name can be among the rest of those greats. And there aren't many.

Wow this argument loses all credence when Otis Smith is mentioned as being better then Glenn. I don't think Glenn earned the nickname toast? I remember Holmes and he wasn't as good as Glenn either. The only player in that era who could be argued to be better then Glenn was Hasty and he played what seemed like so few years with the team that I don't know if you can say as a Jet he was better. If I remember correctly Hasty wasn't a PB until he went to KC.

Glenn was not as good as Williams, Smith and Surtain.

I think Woodson was very overrated as well. GREAT safety, not great cover corner. he was a playmaker on INTs and I think that clouds peoples judgements a bit but I think he was a much better safety than a corner.

Glenn was not great, great corners can cover the better WRs in the league. Glenn was a good corner and wacthing those '98 games I am 100% confident Otis was our best corner that year.

Pro bowls are meaningless, guys make PBs on winning teams and James didn't play for winning teams until he left here.

Otis was our best corner in the late 90s.

Guys develop reputations and people never change their perceptions of them, Otis had down years but w/ us and NE he was really good. Glenn had really good years but was never great and was always burned by good WRs.

I thought Glenn was a bit overrated as a CB, he of course was awesome as a kick returner early in his career. He and Coleman were made expendable in the expansion draft after the playoff game at Oakland where they could barely stay on the field with an aging Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. That was the game where Vinny played well but every time we scored they would burn us for another TD. I think the Jets decided after that they needed to get out of those contracts and re-do the secondary.

I'm not sure about Otis Smith, I would put Hasty above Glenn, maybe Jerry Holmes, definitely not Donnie Abraham. Certainly not Tony Stargell.

Remember that returned missed FG for a TD? Sweet.

We'll still remember him as a Jet.

I thought about Stragell and maybe Russell Carter:smile:

I remember that, we lost that game. Our last loss of '98 until the title game.

AG was a solid corner but not a shutdown corner like Revis. I could tell in Revis' first season he would be better than AG.

The Jets had no choice to let AG walk...they were screwed by the Cap. The Jets got the best years of AG, the Texans got a couple and then it was downhill.

Jimmy Johnson, Lem Barney, Herb Adderley, Willie Brown and Dick Lane were other great CBs. I rank all of them higher than Green.

  11. Lane was a hell of an athlete and a just a monster on the field.

I agree w/ you about Green as well...I was on a work call during my original post and couldn't fully concentrate on alot of the name's. Greene was a solid player, but his legacy has been inflated due to longevity and success w/ one franchise.

In all fairness, the Texans have been around since 2002, and don't have any HOFers to speak of....I think its fair to say that he is one of the most notable Texans to date, outside of Andre Johnson of course. Steve Slaton is another.

If that is where he chooses to retire that's up to him...Still love the guy.

It's been going on for a while.

Didn't Victor Green do this with the Jets? I think he did, but I am not totally sure. I've always thought this one day contract business was silly. What is the point? Is the player informing the team he wants to be an ambassador, is he looking for a job with the team? I don't fully understand the whole thing.

Steve Slaton? Maybe DeMeco Ryans, Dunta Robinson, Matt Schaub, Mario Williams or Chester Pitts but not Slaton.

The Texans have made almost no impact on the NFL in their entire existance. The league really should have kept the Oilers name, etc in Houston the way they did with Cleveland, it would be a lot better.

Good cover guy. Not very good when he had to fill the end of the line on an outside run. I remember the Galloway game when he caught two TDs and was talking major trash on the sidelines, then Glenn picked off the next one and Galloway sprained his ankle on the play or something.
