Every position should be earned. Even the #2 pick in the draft. Personally I'm game for a genuine QB competition. Let the best player win.
Going into the Bengals game, ZW must have been watching with a sick feeling about his own performance thus far and the hopelessness of the season. He was probably expecting to see a debacle with few teachable moments. His head was likely spinning under the pressure to come back and somehow turn things around. Instead he got a fantastic lesson in how effective an NFL offense can be if the QB is equipped with a good plan, remains poised, and doesn't overreach. By far the best thing for Zach would be the offense humming again on Thursday. Zach will be relieved of all pressure to rush back and make something positive happen. But more importantly, he'll be able to absorb this lesson again: he doesn't have to be great to make this offense go. He can relax and have fun. He just has to be poised. That's all. Let's go, Mike L and Mike W!!! Do Zach a huge favor and make it work it again on Thursday.
Arent you rationalizing his successful game? Its because he didnt get an opportunity, or he was held back because he wasnt a top pick......how many successful 4 rd and later qbs have there really been? Maybe hes not trash but cincy played soft the entire game and gave him those underneath throws. You cant give him a pass for his lack of opportunities before yesterday then turn around and not give it to a rookie, thats silly. He had a great game no doubt, but hes not the future franchise qb.....there have been qbs who have amazing games and then come crashing back down to earth. Look at WFT and that situation.....heineke had a few good games and now is coming back down to earth. He threw for almost 400 against the Giants, hes clearly not the answer for that franchise. Im saying be measured, not dont be excited, not dont be happy. He wasnt great against NE, he was spectacular yesterday, lets see what happens.
Lets just see what Mike White does going forward. Maybe we're lucky and he's the new Brady; maybe he's just solid backup material; maybe he's a scrub who just had a lights-out game (wouldn't be the first time, especially for a first-time starter the opponent has no film on).
Thank goodness Joe Flacko wasn't on our team a week earlier. They would have started him against the Bengals for a guaranteed loss. Mike White didn't just put Zach Wilson on the shelf.... he put Flacko on there as well.
I think you're vastly overestimating how much money it is though. High drafted rookie QBs are still like the 25th paid quarterback in the league. Nick Foles and Case Keenum both make more money. It's not the dollar investment. It's the draft investment that'll put him back on the field sooner than later.
I remember the game when Mo Lewis ended Bledsoe's career and started the Brady fucking era to my bane. Maybe this is karma
I know this is a forum but there's no debate right now bc Wilson can't play. For the time being White is the starter. If he looks this good over 2 or 3 more games THEN you have a debate but for now just enjoy a RARE positive Sunday
If Mike White continues to play this well, or something close to it, over the next game or two, then you keep riding with him. I don't care how the FQB arrives here, whether it's through a high draft pick or if Joe Douglas just picked him up off the curb on the way into the office in the morning, as long as we finally get this thing right. But, I have to admit, there would be a certain degree of karma in it for it to happen to us the same way that Brady happened to the Pats.
Huh? Going INTO the game, I said. Of course he was thrilled when White and the offense put on a show. That's the whole point.
I get what you’re saying and you may be 100% correct. Right now we’re in a Schrodinger’s cat scenario: Does Mike White Stink or is he the second coming? We won’t know until Thursday. The box hasn’t been open yet. We only put the cat in the box. Right now, he stinks and is the second coming. It could be that he didn’t show anything to warrant anything on the practice squad. But another possibility is…an extreme case of personnel mismanagement. Four years ago…Morgan and Hackenburg were ahead of him. We all know how McCagnan felt about Hackenburg. White might’ve just been the guy that everybody forgot about. Maybe he needed four years to develop and the stars aligned and here we are. He looked decent in preseason. I know it’s preseason, but he looked serviceable then. Which brings us back to personnel mismanagement. Even if he goes out there and looks like a starting QB, I’m going to have questions. I already have questions, but imma have more questions. The FO have been doing questionable things all season, this will add to the list. He may not be good at all. But he’s put on a good enough performance to give us something to think about—in a good way.
That game plan was the game plan ive been talking about all season, that lafleur never called till yesterday. I'm staying measured, at worst, hes a serviceable back up, at best, hes an improvef kirk cousins.
Yeah, that is why I say the Jets should continue to start Mike White. See what he has. See how teams react to how he played yesterday. I think if he looks good in Indianapolis on Thursday, he will start against the Bills. If he falls back to Earth, they can turn back to Wilson if he is healthy. If he looks okay and the Jets lose Thursday, I say give White another shot against the Bills and let Wilson get back to 100%. There is nothing wrong with letting Wilson sit and learn the rest of the season too if White stays hot or at least solid. Good problem for the Jets to have.
There's no controversy if he plays well and moves the offense. It's not about big numbers, it's about moving the chains and making the offense look competent. It's not a huge indictment on Wilson to sit and learn. It can potentially help him a lot.
That's exactly how I feel. It felt like Wilson was pushed to play instantly because the Jets had no other option. Now it looks like they do, in Mike White. Zach can sit until he is 100% healthy and 100% ready to be on the field.
Mike White is obviously more talented than most people expected. Good for him. Good for JD and the CS for sticking with him. They obviously can recognize talent when they see it. All that said, Zach Wilson has more natural ability IMO. Sure he can screw up and fail to realize all that talent, but I personally would be shocked if that happens. And I think JD and Saleh would be shocked also. But if it does, and Mike White proves to be better than Zach, more power to him, and hopefully he can become the long. lost FQB the Jets have been looking for all these decades. Still, the odds of a 5th round QB who has never started before last week, becoming a consistently good starter, let alone a FQB, are pretty slim. But I'm sure not going to root against him.
It was really great to see White's performance on Sunday and I loved very minute of it, but I think we need to cool our jets a bit. Zach Wilson is still the FQB and Mike White did a great job stepping in, when Zach is injured. He proved to be competent and exceeded expectations, and we now don't need to rush Zach back. But Zach is the future here. White is in his 4th year, even though he did not play, he was exposed in practice and on the sidelines to NFL, unlike Zack, who is 4 years younger and is a real rookie. Let's not get crazy here. Now if he does play like he did yesterday consistently, it would be great, as then we would have a really good problem on our hands, but I am not holding my breath. I am thinking at best Garoppolo, and even that is a very high expectation. I think Zack is learning a lot from this, and it will help him greatly when he is back. He is the FQB, and we also have a really good back-up as well in White.
Whoa! Let's slow down a bit. The Jets do not have a franchise quarterback and have not had one in forever. Let's first find a guy who can win a few games for the team and stop trying to create something that does not currently exist. The depth chart will work itself out without considering what artificial titles may have been prematurely granted.
