I was a fan of Sowell...He picked up his all-around game a few years back when he developed into a very good pass-catcher and at one point was our leading receiver! A punishing blocker, very under-rated fullback.

Just something dark that sticks out to me was the 5-0 vs. 5-0 Jets-Pats matchup in 2004 in Foxboro and he fumbled at the 10 of New England...That one still sticks in my mind. Can't shake it.

I'm not sure. He's got to know now that he's in the twilight of his career, though. At his age and his position, he's got one year left, max. Anything's possible, but keeping him is a good idea.

Hey guys this is great stuff. I actually put up an official http://jetstv.com/?p=16 Jerald Sowell Tribute

I have gotten 10 farewell's and it would be awesome if anyone who wants to say bye to Jerald could do so here. I am planning on sending this to him (some how) when he is officially cut in the coming days.

Sowell was a VERY GOOD blocking FB.. Overall, I thought he was better than Richie Anderson, just because his blocking was that much better and he was still a good receiver.... Is it any wonder that CMart had the best year of his career behind Sowell and not Anderson?

Despite his short time as a starter, throughout his career he's been one of my favorite Jets and I'll definitely miss #33...

I like Jerald Sowell, and I would miss his blocking, but we drafted BJ Askew and need to get him on the field. It's a logistics decision, and cutting Sowell would tell me that the FO/CS saw what they needed to on tape or from coaches out of Askew to give him the nod.

I'll bet he's a Patriot before March goes out like a lion or lamb or whatever. His pass catching abilities would be an attractive choice for them.

Well Askew was a great athlete out of college and has a bigger frame than Sowell does. Sowell is solid, but he's not the best blocker in the world. I guess we're going to go young everywhere and really only keep Martin as the veteran on the offense.

It sucks to cut a good player like this loose in such an opportunistic division.

  11. Sowell will go down as one of the more underrated players in Jets history.

Sowell was so under-appreciated by almost everyone, including me now that I think about it. It was like he was never talked about, but he did the job he was askled to do every game. I Will miss #33 big time....BJ will step up

I dont understand the release of Sowell. I pisses me off actually. This guy has been nothing but solid since he took over for Anderson a few years ago. He wasnt making that much money and all this does is open up another hole in the offense. I dont get it.

Not for nothing but Sowell was I beleive the longest standing Jet on the roster, nine seasons I think. This guys was under the radar constantly in terms of the respect that he got around here. He is the type of guy you wont on your team in every capacity. He worked his ass off for five or six years on the PS the on ST then to the starting spot and he should have made the PB a few years ago when he had all those catches but he got snubbed. Anyways, gonna miss him.

didnt see the salute to sowell thread.....someone delete this

Sowell was a great blocker and a fantastic recieving FB. Very much someone opponents had to worry about dropping out from his blocking duties and slipping near the sideline for a nifty five-ten yarder. I will miss him.

he might have been one of the best dump-off fullbacks in the league

Sowell did very good things but had too many fumbles in big games for my liking. Plus it feels like he was our go-to receiver for years!

I do think it's time to give BJ a chance. Let's see what he can do.
