Stats huh? Pats may have had the ball a lot longer than the Jets did but the Pats offense wasn't doing anything all game vs the Jets defense. Bring up all the stats you want. Going into the half 14-3 and seeing how New England was moving the ball coming out to start the second half I was never concerned. You could see the Pats were defeated when they were taking their sweet ass time walking up to the line of scrimmage and letting the clock tick down late in the fourth.
That's 53, not 63. I remember watching the Giants vs the Browns in 1958 at one of my relative's houses. My father's cousin was living in southern Mass and was a big Giants fan at the time. I have been a Patriot fan since 1960. I've been to Patriots games at Nickerson Field, Fenway Park, and Schaefer Stadium. I've never been to the Razor mostly because I had moved to New Jersey by then.
"Tom Brady connected on a 2-yard TD pass to Alge Crumpler with 13 seconds left in the third quarter to close the Patriots' best drive of the game. Sammy Morris then took a direct snap and leaped over the line to record a two-point conversion. Jets 14, Patriots 11" Sorry, but I just don't buy a total domination scenario when it a 3 point game at the start of the fourth quarter.
Substitute Jets for Steelers and Brady for Sanchez and you have the AFC Championship Game right there.
The difference being that no-one's arguing that the Jets didn't get their arses handed to them in the AFCCG; it was of their own making with the defence's refusal to make tackles in the first half, but they got what they deserved. Felcher's ludicrous claim that the Patriots only lost because they messed up a gadget play is wanky homerism of the highest order that belongs on a Patsies board, not here.
That 4th down play was the biggest of the game IMO. It gave the Jets the ball on the Patriots 37 yard line with just over a minute to go in the 1st half. Instead of punting and forcing the Jets to most likely down the ball and go into the half 7-3 with the Pats getting the ball out of the half, it gave them great field position and they took advantage with a TD to go into halftime 14-3. It's not homerism to see how big that play was. It's not the only reason they lost, but it was the biggest play of the game to why the Jets won.
Get it through your thick head. It turned a 1 score game into a 2-score game in a game where points were hard to come by. It doesn't take a 5th to see that it changed the game. Maybe you're in 4th grade?
Why bother calling the RBs a draw and giving the CBs to the Jets? It's clear McCourty is far better than that Rivas guy. The Pats are not only the best football team ever assembled, they are without a doubt the greatest collection of beings ever assembled for any purpose. That there haven't been more sacrifices in their name is a crime.
Oh, it's clear the Pats were the far superior team that day, as they are every day. In fact, their generosity in allowing the Jets to score 28 points on them is a testament to the magnanimous nature of Bill Belichick.
But but but they got more total offense, first downs, and more time of possession! Give them their moral victory, damnit!
Good point, Tony. Nothing this year is going to be normal due to the lockout. So much time was lost. Should be an interesting year.
I think Scarnecchia is one of the best Oline coaches in the NFL. Except for the occasionally pickup like Mankins the Patriots Oline is rarely full of bonified studs yet the line is often well regarded. That said I think the Pats have picked up some pretty interesting Olinemen in the off-season. The defense also looks to be quite different this year. I think it should be good year for the Pats.
